"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

Today, I had to deal with several users trying to get access to other's Windows Live ID accounts. The culprits were simply tricking some of you into giving your password away. While this particular case has been dealt with, I thought a simple security refresher was in order.

Bungie and/or its representatives generally cannot help you if something goes wrong - nobody hacked your group, you just gave someone permissions who was trustworthy.

That's supposed to be untrustworhy I think. I might just me misreading it though. It's so sad that something like this is needed. Are people just lacking in common sense? O.o

And I don't know if you can answer this, but how were they asking? Was it via PMs, or were they so blatent as to ask in a thread in one of the main forums?

  • 09.11.2006 6:16 PM PDT

I'm not that active, but never dead.

Maybe something as sinister as IRC sessions?
Edit: Someone asked me for futher explaination:

Some unidentifed users (I did a /whois but it didn't tell me much) were pretending to be Bungie.net staff/mods etc, and asking for passwords. This was quite a while ago, back when #CFounders was still on irc.subnova.com. Anyways, since I'm not a mod or anything, don't take this as official, but I'm pretty damn sure that no bungie employee/repersentive will ever ask you for your password.

Should be common sense, but just wanted to re-state it.

(10:20:17 PM) Pezza: You were the one with the video camera breathing heavily. Of course you saw.

Is not saving your email and password recommended even on a private computer?

Hmm, thanks for the reminder, Achronos. I'll be sure to remember your advice.

Now THAT is what I am talking about, Achronos.

Finally getting rid of those groups that are a meeting place for destroyers, good to hear.

IMO, people can only destroy their own groups. It's such common sense to not give full control. It's practically an invitation to have your group ruined.

A witty signature.

Is there anyway to get it back if it is stolen?

Edit: Or at least deactivate it?

Thankyou very very very very very very much Achronos. :D. But seriously, things like this have gotten out of hand, and I'm excited to see that you've taken action. And I'll admit I've been part of things such as "conquerings" but it's pretty stupid looking back on it. Once again, thanks.

Thanks, the typo is fixed. And no, I'm not going to elaborate on the specific method if the incident in question. To those who know what it was, I suggest you not elaborate either.

I think you can deactivate it. Just as long as the person who stole your account didn't change the password.

Ah, look at the lonely people...

Very good, I was hoping someone would remind people on proper security measures. Good job, Achronos.

No. I am not doing the work of restoring the group if you were not willing to take the time to do the work to protect it in the first place. Groups are given a lot of freedom to do what they want, but with that freedom comes a price: you have to deal with this kind of thing yourself.

And if you are talking about your Passport/Windows Live ID - you can always change the password - that is, if the person who stole it from you hasn't changed it for you.

Fair enough. Well, that's about it for me I guess. Thanks for the little Q&A :)

I find it nonsense that we're not notified on what kind of methods they take to get our passwords. Whether it'll promote more activity or not. Not knowing how it happened is the same as not knowing at all.

It's like 9/11 but saying "you don't need to know how the buildings came down, just take our word for it and don't worry"

It's horrible that you can even think of comparing the two. One is the taking of a few people's passwords, another is the taking of a few thousand people's lives. Words can't really express how angry that statement made me. There are few things in history that can be compared to what happened that day. This is certainly not one of them.

Cool it, Fantasy Star. They are not the same.

I already told you in general terms what happened, and I also told you how to say safe. There isn't any hacking going on, it was just a reminder to let people know that some people have attempted to trick people into giving them your passwords. As long as you follow my guidelines, you'll be fine.

I'm not going to explain in detail a method that a bunch of people fell for so you or anyone else can go and duplicate it.

Thank you. I got hacked a few years back (When it was still called Passport, heh...) and I've always set it to forget me after I close the window. :)

As big of a hassle as it is, guys, it's SO worth it.

Another thing to watch out for (That I have seen many times):

Look for Bungie/Xbox/Microsoft/Live in the URL, or make sure it is a site that you trust. If somebody sends you a link to a webpage you are not familiar with, and requires you to sign in with a passport/live id, It could just be a fake form made to look like Microsoft, and just send your password and username to the creator's email address.

And as stated before, NEVER send your password to anybody, and make sure you use different passwords for everything you have.

Thanks Tom! There's always those people in the world who just lack common sense... Hopefully this will knock some sense back into them.

Thank you Mr. Gioconda for the refresher for the less intellectual people here in the matter of security for their Passport accounts. It was an interesting read nonetheless. I hope people do read it, and start to think about the matters of security for their personal information.

Here's a question that I don't think you'll be able to answer about the problem of people stealing (this particular problem especially), cheating, or any other immoral act? What goes through these peoples heads!?! I know I'm not perfect, but my consience at least keeps me from going too far.

Hope it's not too off topic.
