Subject: A Warning From The Overlord

f1r5t p0s7!

Just kidding.

Good to hear that you'll be taking action against the "group wars" and the general idiotic-ness.

I will sell my password for $500. PM me if you are interested. You'll get my password after I receive the money.

Is not saving your email and password recommended even on a private computer?

Depends who else uses your computer. If anyone else who might think it is funny to log into the site as you and mess up stuff uses your computer then don't use the keep me logged in function.

I'm the only person who uses my computer so I stay logged in. I always delete my cookies before letting someone else use it.

I think that's what he meant by a private computer :P. Anyways i do the same; no one really uses my computer, and the ones who do wouldn't even know how to HaXxzOr me.

The question never got answered and I have to admit I am a bit curious as well, Achronos. Would you recommend not using the "Save my ID and Password" option even on your own computer?

"The debts of meat will live on in eternia." -lukems

I think for liability reasons no one would suggest that, even though the option is there.

we don't need that kind of idiocy around here.

People who frequent this forum often are so used to typing in Username and Password that it just comes at instinct. I had a friend a while ago link to a page on his myspace saying "cool picture" or something, and it was a site under his domain that looked like the myspace login page. You'd be surprised at how many usernames and passwords he collected. Luckily he's not a loser, and did it as a harmless test, though I'm sure the victims didn't feel very happy about that.

So what happens when someone steals my passport account?

They can bypass the "blam" filter on Bungie.net and get me blacklisted?

(the point is, I don't recall entering any important information into the passport account. Is there something valuable that can be accessed through this service?)

To me a private computer means not public like a library computer. Oh well the same advice goes.

Your passport is your identity on bnet, so if you gave me your password I could ruin everything you control. I could take over any groups that you have full control in. I could get you permanently banned by posting stuff in the forums. If you have a hotmail account tied to it they could also read your email. If you handle anything financial through that email things could get ugly.

Achronos, i had once came to bungie and as soon as i went there without signing in, a Windows ID box came up. i tried going in again but it kept coming up. Finally, i just put in my password. I DID NOT SAVE EITHER. is this related to that?

So I think Jun's a master chef, because he takes off his helmet and your like whoa, I think he's a chef.

So to shorten this up, Jun is master chef.

In regards to groups, I think that promoting people to the same security role as the founder should be restricted to full control users or have a separate option because if you trust a council member to give small promotions, they shouldn't be able to promote other people to full control. That way, the groups are just about impenetrable.

Mob of Angry Peasants

AS people havn't learn that the members of Bungie.net are so untrustworthy!

I mean all the threads in Chapter Founders about groups being hijacked or conquered by giving them full control privleges, and now even trusting thew with their passwords?!?!?!?

Bottom line. NEVER TRUST AN UNKNOWN FACE YOU MET ON THE INTERNET!!!!!!![/shout]

This is not something new. Phishing has been used by many cons to obtain personal information such as passwords, social security numbers, and bank accounts by many con-artists online. AND MANY OF THEM GET AWAY WITH IT! Protect yourself, protect your identy, protect your information. Protect your passwords[/rant]

What about planned attacks on groups from other groups? Not taking over the group, but spamming it and slanderizing everyone and everything the group stands for before the group mods and admins have a chance to ban them. Is that deemable as offensive and bad behavior? I would hope so. And is that something that people should be banned for from the main forums?

I find it nonsense that we're not notified on what kind of methods they take to get our passwords. Whether it'll promote more activity or not. Not knowing how it happened is the same as not knowing at all.

It's like 9/11 but saying "you don't need to know how the buildings came down, just take our word for it and don't worry"

It's horrible that you can even think of comparing the two. One is the taking of a few people's passwords, another is the taking of a few thousand people's lives. Words can't really express how angry that statement made me.

You deserve to be angry if you don't understand what he means. Hes NOT trying to say they are equivalent in scale. Hes trying to say they are the same in principals.

However, I must dissagree. Achronos did the right thing by not telling us what kind of methods they used. If he did, surely more and more users would try them.

Another thing to watch out for (That I have seen many times):

Look for Bungie/Xbox/Microsoft/Live in the URL, or make sure it is a site that you trust. If somebody sends you a link to a webpage you are not familiar with, and requires you to sign in with a passport/live id, It could just be a fake form made to look like Microsoft, and just send your password and username to the creator's email address.

And as stated before, NEVER send your password to anybody, and make sure you use different passwords for everything you have.

wow even though you might have made some new people do that.. THANK YOU! You have probably saved me, as nowi am going to check for that. Thank you VERY much.

Wow, it is sad that something like this happens. I would expect it from another site...but I guess not. Stupidity is a common trait among people I guess.

Achronos, how hard would it be for someone to actually guess your password if they know your passport?

Yeah me neither.

I Would Like To Point Something Else Out. Someone Could Steal Your Account By Answering You Secret Question. Depending On The Question It Can Be Easy!

There is a formula for this. It depends on how many characters it could possibly be and how long the password is. The number of character possibilities raised to the power of the length gives the number of possibilities. This explains why passwords that just use letters are less secure than ones that use numbers and symbols in addition to letters, and it explains why longer passwords are more secure. Passwords that use common words can be guess using a dictionary.

Anyhow passport limits your attempts to sign in to so many times in so many minutes. This slows down the brute force/dictionary type attempts. As long as your password is reasonably long and random you don't have to worry much because that formula gives a high number.

Someone mentioned it before me but I'll mention it anyway. There is a method for getting lost passwords with a secret question. This might also be used to get your password if anybody knows that information about you. Either make sure it is a question nobody knows about you or do like I do and just enter a large string of garbage into the answer. The second choice makes it hard to get your password back if you forget it though.

So really, if you do your part, then getting the password even if they know your login name is impossible.

Today, I had to deal with several users trying to get access to other's Windows Live ID accounts. The culprits were simply tricking some of you into giving your password away. While this particular case has been dealt with, I thought a simple security refresher was in order.

No offense but........finally, he catches them.

They didn't hack anything as Achronos said...they just tried to scam people out of their account information. Big difference.
