The structure and capabilities of the BNet groups being what they are I'd say they are most well suited to small groups. Because basically everyone interacts in the same pit. That pit may have several features to it. But it is still all basically one room.
So, I think small BNet groups for clans, LANs, Live nights, and other projects that will involved everyone in the group is fine. Once the group gets over 100+ members you should probably be thinking website, or breaking up into more focused groups.
I was an admin in Games in Action with Greg, a.k.a. Goldhawk. It was fun, until we accidentally attracted hundreds of more users than we were expecting. Then, it was like, "WTF do we do know?" We're still somewhat working on that question.
First thing we did was add two more admins. One a web designer and the other a web programmer. We were very lucky and happy they joined us, two awesome guys by the names of Armatik and Smutzinhienman.
The fifth admin, in case you're curious, is our founder Maximum Fear. Fear's job, as far as I can tell, seems to be rotationally blacklisting the rest of us and basically reminding us all that he's the BMOC. It's nice having Fear around, it's kind of like having our own in-house Shishka.
I think some of the larger groups can still be effective. KOTOR has been consistently active for a year now. As long as a group is active and has leadership, I don't think size is all that important.
