Me personally i think it was a mix of both, everyone and their uncle (quite literally) were having lan parties across the world, and still do to this day be it halo 1 and or 2. As far as the story and campaign are concerned they take me to one hell of an universe i would love to visit time and time again. The levels and challenges provided in the game kept me coming back for more over and over again.

I forgot to add an answer option for both.

Definately campaign; I have to admit it was much more epic than Halo 2's campaign, everything felt bigger and badder.

i know what you mean. But i dont think halo 2's campaign was bad at all, its just that with halo ce everyone was just being introduced to the world of halo and its worlds, so things were definately going to seem bigger and better. But with halo 2 you already knew what was going on and kinda already knew what was going to happen in the second game, there were no hints or anything leading up to halo 1 as far as worlds we would be on or story for that matter. But i still agree with you.

Campaign made it popular, but Multiplayer kept attracting more and more people than ithe great story did (Not me, I got it on launch cause it looked awesome and cause I was planning a game similar to Halo since before I heard bout it..so I had to change virtually my whole design except the whole Alien vs. Human bit)

I agree. Halo 2's campaign was a major disappointment, but Halo 2 multiplayer is awesome.

Campain defentaly.
It was so much bigger than in Halo2, i mean how everyone dies and all makes it intense.

ftw=?

Campaign attracted newcomers, but everyone stayed for the multiplayer. The game has the best campaign of any console game('cept maybe HL2) and was also the first FPS on a console that could be LANed. Everyone and their dads' played it. I dont vote becasue it was BOTH.
