When I try to connect to another computer by direct IP on my LAN to play a network game, the message "client is newer than the server" and it will not connect. And when the other computer tries to connect to the one I am on it says "client is older than the server".

Also nothing shows up when I do the LAN connect..it will not show up on the list.

Does anyone know why it says this or how I will be able to play on my LAN.

Thanks a bunch,
Mark

i actualy know what's wrong, and it can be 1 of 2 options.
1) you're on a mac, and can't connect because one computer has been updated, and the other hasn't. you can download updated at this site http://www.microsoft.com/games/halo/downloads.asp
NOTE: if you download the update, you will need to insert your halo cd in order to play it
2) if you'r on a PC, it's much easier. just click on internet, insted of lan game, and Halo will automaticaly update.
NOTE: if you own a cracked copy of halo (in which case i hate you, u unloyal pice of dirt) you might need an updated crack to continue running halo after the update.

other NOTE: you must update both computers in order to play against one another

uhhh well i disagree it sounds to me like he needs to include the seperate computer, the one NOT on the LAN, to the other one ON the LAN via Cat. 5 cable so both can communicate as Halo MP needs to

(YOU CANNOT DIAL A DIRECT IP INTO A LAN CONFIG THAT HAS INTERNET TO ONLY ONE COMPUTER)

read what i said. the site i listed for macs works for pc too, go to that page and look for the HALO 1.5 update. d/l that on BOTH computers, and you should be able to get it to work. it'sa probably also somewhere on fileplanet.com, so your friend's not wrong

it did not work. both pcs have the 1.5 patch on them...this is what i have...

i got DSL which is going through a router to both PCs. Both pcs have the 1.5 patch on them. I can connect to the internet servers and find games on both pcs and play on the internet both at the same time, but when i try to do a LAN game with the 2 computers, the game will not show up on the list. I try to do a direct IP connection and it says "connection rejected: client newer than server" I opened up the ports on my router and disabled my firewall to see if that was causing any problems and still will not work..

so the patch didnt do anything. there is something else.

Yeah... I have the same problem, exactly the same. Everything works apart from LAN games between my 2 computers. They're up to date, firewall ports are opened... No idea what to do next.

would i have to set up a dedicated server and then let the other pc on my lan connect to me that way?

I thought you weren't meant to run dedicated server And play Halo on the same PC, doesn't that defeat the point in it being a dedicated server?

Heyyo,

Well, inna sence it becomes a listenserver. :P

Check both your computers. Do their IP's read 192.168.XXX.XXX ? (BTW, the xxx's are random numbers...) if they're not showing those IP's then your router or computers are setup wrong, try again...

If you're running windows xp, I always found that that stupid bridged connections screwed over my lan. If you have that on, turn it off. It's only good for connecting several computers together with multiple ethernet cards and computers, no router. So since you've gotta router, and the computer plug into the routher and not eachother, just select that briged connection, and delete. I bet that's your prob right there dude. I have a router myself, a SMC300 or somethin', n' this fix works all the time. :)

[EDIT]
Oh, after deleting the bridged connections, you may need to restart both comps...

doesn't seem like it is the bridge connection problem, i don't have bridged connections set up. And now it happens when I try to connect to my friend. I do the direct IP to his computer and it says the same thing.. "connection rejected: client newer than server". I am totally lost at this point. Any other ideas?

Heyyo,

Hmm, sounds like a few people are having connectivity problems... You're both using different cd keys right?

Try reinstalling halo, and patch it from just clicking "join internet." if that doesn't work, then it must be a bug in the new v1.05 patch...

i've been using the same cd key on both pcs...maybe that is a reason why? i think its dumb to go out and buy 2 games just to play on the lan but i guess you have to?
