Check both your computers. Do their IP's read 192.168.XXX.XXX ? (BTW, the xxx's are random numbers...) if they're not showing those IP's then your router or computers are setup wrong, try again...
If you're running windows xp, I always found that that stupid bridged connections screwed over my lan. If you have that on, turn it off. It's only good for connecting several computers together with multiple ethernet cards and computers, no router. So since you've gotta router, and the computer plug into the routher and not eachother, just select that briged connection, and delete. I bet that's your prob right there dude. I have a router myself, a SMC300 or somethin', n' this fix works all the time. :)

Oh, after deleting the bridged connections, you may need to restart both comps...
