With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

I was a few minutes away from suggesting something similar. Great plans, though. Although you didn't really suggest this, I'd actually be in favor of Bungie shutting down their site until post-release entirely. Would we really miss anything? All the info on Halo 2 that Bungie wants us to know before the release has been revieled. Bungie doesn't owe us anything, and there are plenty of other sites one can go to in order to get non-plot-essential information on Halo 2. Nothing terribly important is happening inside the forums, aside from the leak -blam!- (which shouldn't really be posted anyway, since all one has to do is report a leak-showing site via email).

Of course my idea is a naive one, considering I know nothing about site management. Perhaps its very difficult to just shut down a site and start it up again a few weeks later. If anyone thinks my idea wouldn't work (which, believe me, I woulnd't be surprised if it wouldn't), feel free to tell a mod to snip that part of this post.... Bad plans aren't worth reading about.

Your suggestion seems a little harsh. A good idea but too tough. I'm not sure if Bungie could turn away all of its new fanbase to keep things safe. That might be more damage than any now&then spoilers that pop up.

What damage? It wouldn't be an action against the fans, it'd be for the fans. Protecting us from plot-spoilers, which are crappy things to see without experiencing them first-hand. Besides, we don't really have rights on these forums anyway (we don't actually deserve them or need them, either).

I was speaking too quickly and not explaining what I meant. I meant if Bungie did shut down the forums for the next 3 weeks, future fans (that could be long term fans), would not have a reason to stay here. These forums are building their fanbase daily. A couple of people having the game spoiled, as horrible as that is, is not worth losing new potential members. Especially when moderating can pretty much take care of everything.

Good point. I was a bit short-sighted in what I said, and hadn't looked to the future... but I don't think the repercussions would be too bad... I think the trade-off might be worth it. But that's just me... maybe I'm being a bit too drastic and uncaring. If so, I apologize... I merely think it necessary.

From personal experience - it would be a god damned blessing to have that system in place. I am very sad, aggrivated and depressed. Someone posted a spoiler on another forum, with no Spoiler warning, not even in a related thread.

People will understand the need to wait - if their intentions are pure.

And if their intentions are to ruin the game for others as they have done to me -- then screw them.

I don't think it's that drasctic, I'd vote for just shutting down the entire forum, as anyone who downloaded it likely has an account already. But of course, with release so soon, anticipation rising, that doesn't look like it will happen. :-(

Seeing as we're now dealing with criminal activity, The Dark Hand of Microsoft should make an appearace. This is the developer that has helped Microsoft's console so much, so safeguarding the project and it's fanbase should be one of the Xbox divisions top priorities. I'd take it in a different direction, all new members from now until the ninth must register with hotmail, the worlds largest email provider. Anyone who posts spoilers will have had the game, stole from Bungie, so MS should shut down, or lock their email, at the least.

After that precautionary step, we should change New Mombasa to make it less easy to spam with spoilers. I've been thinking about this for a while, not sure if it would be a good idea or not, each thread has a number beside it, and if it's spam, or spoilers, people can click on the number. The higher the number of people clicked on it, the less likely people are to go to it, and the easier it is for the mods to notice it.

Come to think of it, that sucks. The mods, are pretty much guaranteed to have the game ruined for them, no matter what.

  • 10.16.2004 9:19 PM PDT

It's hard to say exactly what best to do in these kinds of situations. Seven mods is almost too little of an amount to handle the amazing amount spam/leaked info entering the forums.

Recon, Jim, and I spent several hours last night talking about what we think would be best to do with the forums in the state they are in. Almost every course of action seems highly “drastic” by any standards, but sometimes those things must be done.

I can hardly say what to do in this situation, it's really up to the mods. However, I would be happy to see some action taken other than what is being done now. With the HBO forums likely to be shut down due to leaked information being post there, there is even more of a chance for those leaks to be posted here, for everyone to see.

These are hard times for all of us that really care about the Bungie, but we will go on to see better and brighter times. It's darkest before dawn, and we are on the dawn of one of the greatest games of all time to be released to us. Although some people try to ruin our fun by pirating, we will survive, and end the end we will be the ones to enjoy the game the most.

I wouldn't have any problem with bungie locking down the forum. Actually I want them to shut down the main forums 2 weeks post halo 2. I mean I almost don't want to say it but it really sucks to be a mod right now. We have read posts to make sure they don't contain spoilers and if they do we have to shut the thread down. I haven't played halo 2 and I don't want the experience ruined for me. I guess it's just part of the job, but it does suck. =/

I want the 2 weeks or less off just so that I may have time to beat the game and actually play it. I guess I'm being unrealistic, however I don't feel I'm being overly selfish...The mods are fans just like you guys. We don't get paid to do this work. (shishka being the exception - who will meet my mighty ninja in an epic ninja war since he most likely go to play and beat halo 2 already)

I don't believe we need anymore mods. What we need is help from the community. If you see a thread that contains spoilers contact one of the mods. Also do not reply to threads that contain spoilers. Ignore them. Although I understand and I know it will be impossible to ignore some spoilers. And I'm sorry...It sucks.

My suggestion is that you leave the forums now and don't come back until you've beaten Halo 2. The forums will be here when you return.

(You guys probably have noticed I haven't been online much recently - This is due to a personal problem I had to deal with last month. It's gone away now.)

It sucks to be a moderator. Not only before, when you had the responsibility of deciding what should be heard and who should be here (that has to be difficult enough) - but now they have a whole new danger - because of these leak things. MakaVeli has stated that he squints at everything now, so he can see the links and screens if they're there, but so he doesn't ruin much by seeing them clearly. The downside for the Moderators is obvious, but now what about the rest of us?

Now the moderators are angry.

Now a few fans are angry or depressed.

Now these two factions may cross each other on the wrong angle, and someone's going to get banned, (likely a newcomer that simply doesn't know better) thus creating a grudge from the new member (which may or may not be justified).

I tried to prevent a few bannings early Thursday by posting piracy@microsoft.com in about 15-20 threads. Then it began to get close so I tried a self imposed hiatus. I went to a couple more forums, I sat on news sites hoping for news of a swift Microsoft victory. As a matter of fact - I was in one of those very 'victory supporter' threads, when the (possible) plot of the game was ripped from me. Along with another 100 people in that thread. I was angry, and sad, and I came here afterwards to sulk. I caught myself before I flamed a thread that had a link to another site in it. The poster had no intention of spoiling it for anyone - he was simply ignorant and trying to help. But I almost gave him a page and a half of the most insulting, rude and vile rant that I have ever thought about putting on this forum.

Luckily, I thought better of myself and hit the cancel button.

But what do these moderators go through, and what happens when it's not someone like me who gets the next sneak spoiler? Remember - the spoiler I saw wasn't in it's own thread, it was in a thread with the opposite intent. The person only posted it there to be an -blam!-. It was an ambush - if you will. It's only a matter of time before it happens here. I pray that the moderators find it quick - but, it's not likely they find it before a few more people get their experience ruined.

Here's the rub. I'm praying, that the person who did that was lying. I hope he was just trying to be a dick. I hope that he didn't beat the game in a day. But even if he was lying, he stole some fun away from me. I don't want anyone else to feel this way. Louis Wu has a poll up at the HBO forums. I think if you go and view that poll you'd find that the majority of Bungies fans would in fact support this decision. Lofty as it may be.

It may be difficult for the system to handle a specific poster lockout. That's just a limitation on a forum system. But I would pledge support for the temporary shut down of main forum posting, with only the groups forums left open. It's drastic, but for the protection of your property's integrity, I think it may be a necessary one.

shut down is needed in my eyes. Sure we could all simply not visit b.net, but that isn't good enough. Like stosh said (good to hear that your problem is solved), the mods would like a few weeks of to play halo 2 and they have the problem of looking through the posts for spoilers. And if the mods quit for a while and b.net doesn't shut down? yup, spammers and naughty boys can ruin this place. Shut down is needed if you ask me!

  • 10.17.2004 7:16 AM PDT

Agreed. We need to shut down this joint; I've already had two storyline elements spoiled for me. We could all just leave- but there is one problem with that, some people find it very difficult to actually leave this place. And if you actually believe that the members of New Mombasa will put SPOILER tags before every spoiler infested post, and are responsible enough not to post vital storyline elements, then you are, quite frankly, an idiot. I regret to say that the New Mombasa track record has been void of almost any kind of decency or responsibility. Spoilers will be posted there, and will ruin the game for even more people. We should stop the forums now, and kill the problem before it gets even worse.

A shut down wouldn't be a bad idea, but it would tick off new members.
I say shut it down, but I've been a member for a few months now and
understand the community somewhat. (or at least I'd like to think so)
New members wouldn't be as forgiving.

It's quite the puzzle, but if spoilers are to be stopped altogether on
Bungie.net, shutdown of the forums is the only answer I see.

I'm not here to disagree but the developers role is a little more important in this case than a fan site, so completely shutting down forums might actually BACKFIRE against new people to the world of Bungie. Just food for though.

I too, am in favor of complete shutdown, except for the groups. The forums have been quite devoid of intelligent life anyway, lately, and it's doing me no good staying around. I do, because I'm hooked. I, luckily, haven't had anything ruined for me. Yet. I'd rather keep it this way, or else I am going to have to leave as well. I do NOT want this game to be ruined for me.

New members would come back after they play Halo 2, trust me. So that, in my opinion, is not a problem.

Yeah this does sound harsh, but I agree. We need to be harsh if we don't want to find out what the main plot details are before Nov 9.

This is -blam!- crazy. I've banned like 6 people tonight. No one is reading the rules, or could be no one cares I guess. Users keep posting up url to vids and stuff...GRRR

I think the only real end is with the game's final release. Even with exhaustive and drastic measures taken to prevent spoilers and such, it will still happen. In the few moments between a topics creation and closure...someone can always see it, and become tainted.

Sorry...no suggestions from me. Just the grim tru7h. However I am in favor of the suggested shutdown. It's only fair.

...And I've already had more than one major plot point ruined for me, so anyone who's been affected, you're not alone.
