I think that there should be a feature added, where when a thread gets locked, it will say which mod locked it, so you can PM them and ask why they locked it.

Or, you could have a feature whereby, when a thread is being locked. The mod has a choice of clicking "Spamming", "Flaming" etc etc, as options. Whichever he clicks edits the original post of the thread saying "Thread locked due to XXX"

Saves us all time.

Yes, but most of you guys don't.

Yes, but most of you guys don't.

When they don't give a reason for locking a thread, it's because it should be terribly obvious why the thread was locked in the first place.

Yes, but it would stop most of the "Z0mG wHy W4s mY 7hr34D L0ck3D!!???eleven" threads.

If it helps I delete the "where did my thread go" threads instead of locking them :-)

I try to reply most times I lock the thread though, or in a PM.

Most of the time, one should be able to tell why it was locked anyways..

Not all of the time, though. The other day, Code Zero showed me a thread he made (I'll try to find it) that was locked without explanation. I couldn't really tell why it was locked, no mod had posted, and no one PMed him. That feature would stop things like that. It's been said before, and I still stand behind it.

Or, at least an unwritten rule for mods to have to indicate the reason for locking in a post.

It is a tad harsh if a post is locked and there's no explanation. But for the most part, yes, it should be obvious why it was locked.

Deleted Threads? I don't get why that feature is enabled. I mean, I can understand why you'd use it on a Thread with an inappropiate title, but yesterday there was a thread that asked about what your favorite Mods were, and rather than a lock that said "Don't discuss modding on this site," it was deleted. Fair enough, but in those situations, an explanation of the rules (because the Thread Creator was new) would probably be better than deletion.

I say that the delete feature should be reserved for threads with inappropiate titles, and then you lock the foolish threads and provide an explanation. Why else would you have both abilities? I mean, if all it took to moderate was just closing threads, then you should delete every off-topic one because explanations would be "redundant."

Rather, the ability to lock means that there should be more instances where you leave a little reply (locked for spam, locked for off-topic) as opposed to just a closing of the conversation. This way, people can learn from their mistakes and not make more Threads about it, or make a thread asking why his Threads get locked.

Just my $0.2

If your thread is locked, don't complain. It makes you look like a tool. Just accept it and start sharpening your energy sword.

We're not here to spoon-feed the rules to every single member.

True. But the guy who's Thread was deleted yesterday actually asked me why, so I told him it was because it was about Modding.

Whereas today you just locked another modding thread and provided a link to the Rules. Which was a good thing- better than deleting it and running the risk of said member making a new thread out of confusion, or making a thread asking why his thread was deleted (happens quite a bit when threads get deleted.)

*edit* Ah, now I kind of see how it's working: Should a member say something like "You can't discuss this here" or "Read the Stickies," then I guess that should be enough of an explanation that you guys need when you lock it- so an explanation by you Ninjas wouldn't necessarily be needed.

Alrighty, the system works. But the deleted threads stuff needs a bit more tweaking, just a bit.

Not all the time, no. Yesterday, I had a thread that for some reason was randomly locked. It was either

a. An uptight mod
or b. Someone else's fault.

Because, VII Toast stopped in and didn't lock it. It got locked several hours later. And whoever locked it didn't leave any sort of identification, so I had no idea who locked it, why they did it, and I couldn't even PM them.

I'm not complaining. I'm talkng about an idea that should be implemented in such cases.

Which thread are you talking about? Would you mind giving us a link so we know what the thread was about and how people acted within the thread?

Here it is. My guess is it was locked because other people were throwing it off topic.

That doesn't matter! You should still be given the courtesy of an explanation.

And what if someone completely doesn't understand why it happened? And don't you DARE say that would never happen. My cousin, who I live with, was born with fetal alcohol effects, and he doesn't understand cause and effect. He doesn't understand that if he makes a mess, he has to clean it up. So it can happen!

Remember: Stupid/pointless threads get locked. Your topic had no real point, other than people posting in "pig latin". That thread would suffer (and did suffer) the same fate as a thread in binary, hex, spanish, russian... etc.

And no, I wasn't the one that locked it, but it was pretty obvious.

Then ask a moderator, who most likely will be able to answer the question. You can't expect a helpdesk to call you when something isn't working.
If it's over obvious, I won't respond. If someone else has already stated it, I most likely won't reply either.
And your topic was spam.

edit: Dmbfan stated it better.

Yes, that thread seemed plenty pointless to me. Dmbfan had every right to close it.

So, why did a ninja stop in, and not lock it?

He didn't. Someone else did, and they didn't leave any identification, so I had no way of asking them. This happens many many times, so that's why I came up with this idea.

What mod?
Also, sometimes, a moderator may decide to allow something for whatever reasons. Depending on the situation as well.
