I have been thinking about this for a long time, and I was wondering if Bungie should bring back the old system they had where you had to own at least one Bungie Game to register an account on Bungie.net. This feature was first used with Myth, if I am correct, and I think that it would have many advantages that would make the forums a better place. The way it was done is that a code was included with your game that let your register online. What follows is an analyis of the idea with it's advantages, and dis-advantages.

Advantages
* Spamming.
It is now nearly-impossible to spam and get away with it for long. A blacklist means so much more, and spamming becomes something that people simply can't afford to lose, and that brings us to the next point...
* Value.
With Bungie games costing about $50US dollars, and a game being required to make an account, it means that a Bungie.net account is now worth that much, even though the price will drop over time.
*

Disadvantages
* People that don't have a Bungie game but still like the old games will not be able to make an account. However I am assuming that if they like the old games that they would have made an account by now.
* Data.
The vast amount of data required to proccess all the different codes would be huge. Not to mention the length of the codes themselves. Halo sold over 7 million copies world-wide, and even using A-Z and 0-9 the number of combinations would have to be big. A far more educated and knowledgable answer of if this is possible is answerable only by Achronos.
* Microsoft
This also needs to be considered. Just because Bungie has creative freedom, does not mean they have marketing and logistical freedom. Microsoft may not approve of the plan if it costs too much money.

Well, that all I have, right now I'm running out of time on this public computer, and I leave the discussion up to rest of Bungie.net's members.

I'm confused as to how it would work. A code in the game lets you make an account, or something like that?

Nah. I doubt it will help much. Most spammers are here to complain about Halo 2, so it wouldn't do much. In my opinion, of course :)

EDIT: It will give people an incentive to not spam, but still. It's a hefty price to pay. I like free accounts.

Good thoughts, it would decrease greatly the "multiple accounts" issue.
However, I'm still debating whether it would be a practical idea in the long-run.

With the way it worked with Myth 2, on the inside of the CD cover sleave there was a box that said:
this is your bungie.net serial number: ################

Except with an actualy number that had letters in it too.

You would enter this when registering on the site.

Ah. It would decrease spam, but I really haven't seen so much spam by multiple accounts in quite some time. And what if you leave Bungie for some time, your account gets deleted, and you want to join again?

Well I think that when you actually purchase a CD you are just buying the rights to that software and its usage within the Developers set of rules..a CoC and ToU. Thus you don't own it...but you own a license to use it.

This is true.. Therefore, Bungie can't just.. Not let you play. Maybe the multiplayer aspect of it would be disallowed?

He's saying you would have to buy the game to have an account on bungie.net. What are you talking about?

Okay then...well I don't really agree. There are fans of the older games that I am sure wouldn't have joined if they were required to have some kind of key to get access just to making an account. It deters too many potential "customers" if you will...

jmh, the thread-starter also mentioned that if you got blacklisted etc., you would not be able to play the game, since it's registered on your account. ;)

Where? I'm not seeing it...

The idea has some advantages, but I wouldn't really be in favor of it.

Also, what if two people only have one copy of a game? Like people who live in the same house. And it would also keep out people who don't own the games, but like to play them. Finally, what about game rentals?

Maybe I've misread this:
-Spamming.

Is that not saying "The people will suffer consequences (such as not being able to play) if they get blacklisted."? If I'm wrong, feel free to tell me. I misinterpret things a lot. It's going to get me killed someday, just watch.

I thought it meant if you get blacklisted you couldn't sign up for another account without buying the game again.

That could be what he meant..

Alex, if you're still around, feel free to enlighten us on that little part. :)

It'd be effective at first, but within three or four months I can almost guarentee there wold be a CD crack type thing to give people access to multiple codes. Other then that, I just don't think it would be very practical.

It makes sense but sadly I voted "no" for all of the disadvantages you listed. It would be a quick, easy way to prevent many-a-moron from just simply running crazy through here.

We would not have impurity if this were the case. Also, if a person felt obliged to spam the forums, they could easily download a copy of Marathon and then proceed to register.

While I may be one of those morons, good sir, I do have the money to purchase the games. I was thinking more along the lines of boredom teenagers with no jobs that dodge blacklists.

Too bad they can't develop a jerk filter, jerk.

But I like reading your posts sometimes...

No. What if someone heard of Bungie.net but never heard of Halo? He can't come to B.net because he doesn't know anything about Halo. So now this poor guy misses out on the coolest game ever because he cant' get a Bungie.net account.

Ok, I thought about it, read responses, and here's mine:

This would work to curb the multiple accounts issue a lot. It may even solve it (I doubt spammers would go through the trouble of downloading Marathon just to keep spamming).

But the problem is that not everyone is going to play Halo, Halo 2, or some of these other games- but instead just like to interact with the community. That's what's important.

Bungie.net should be open to everyone who wants to join and see what this place is about. If we restrict accounts to those who have games, I have a feeling that a sense of Isolation from the outside world would ensue.

The thing is, Bungie.net is a Table. We gather 'round and partake of what Achronos has served, with the Ninjas as our waiters (ok, enough of the corny jokes). LoL, in all seriousness though, the Table should be welcome to all, not just those who have reservations.

I liked the idea though. Multiple accounts aren't that bad, but it's still an issue that needs to be addressed.

My fantasy is to have a threesome with Tiger Woods and the Cookie Monster... in a trash can lubricated with baby oil and fruit punch.

HALL OF FAME
Muno, Jonny, Christobel, Petey, Caboose, Caboose's sister

I honestly think that's a really dumb idea.

It's not a bad idea. Sure, there are a few kinks to work out, but if something like this could actually be used, then it would benefit the community.

However, at this point we won't need it per se, but it's still an excellent way to counter the issue of Multiple Accounts.

Make this place a pay site. 1¢ a year, credit card only. A credit card number will then be attached to a profile, and that credit card would not be able to be used to create another profile. To spam, a person would have to get a new credit card whenever they get blacklisted...

Obviously that would mean a lot of people will stop coming, and I'm alright with that.
