Subject: Why Not Just Delete Them?

In case you didn't know, threads will be deleted after a certain amount of time of inactivity. If no one posts on a thread for a long time, it will eventually be locked, automatically.

Here's my question:

Why not just delete them?

I've looked through the archives of forums, (yes I do have a lot of time on my hands, you don't need to ask) and, in New Mombasa, for example, only about 200 of the 4000 pages were open threads. The rest were locked. So, instead of having an automatic lock, why not an automatic delete. That way, they're gone, and there will be much more open space, less pages to juggle, and it will be more organized.

Because then you get people reposting the threads. At least this way people can search to see if a topic has already been covered.

What about old, helpful threads? Like this or this? I wouldn't want those to get deleted.

But if it was deleted due to inactivity, then I think it's safe to make a new one, it would have been months. And if you want a say in that topic, you should make a new.

They will be, after a while.

They shouldn't. An auto delete system would pretty much render a "useful info" sticky useless.

It would call for un-wanted confusion :-P

Well, if a thread is so important, it will be put in the stickies as a link.

But if the threads get deleted due to inactivity, then how would we be able to see them?

Two scenarios.

1. It won't because it's so popular
2. They'll take it off then.

It would be something to face. Even if it is a very informative thread, it will go eventually, unless certain actions are taken by Bungie's web team.

But then you can just create a new one, if there is the need.

So the rules threads get deleted due to inactivity, then the mods would have to create another one? Seems pretty unnecessary to me.

No, stop twisting my words around.

Every thread, providing it's not stickied, or so popular everyone posts on it every day, will be deleted due to inactivity sometime. But after it is deleted, someone can make a new thread, just like it, if there is the need.

Ah. So stickies would be an exception to the whole deletion process? I think it's just an unnecessary change. It's fun going back through old posts, and seeing how immature I used to be. Or just going back through old threads for memory purposes.

Heres some thought, we have millions of records and books, that date back all thorugh history, but if we did what your proposing, we would burn every book when it ages over a month, a year, etc. Regardless, if that were the case, Humanity would be clueless of it's past.

EDIT: Spelling

You cannot compare those two. One is historical events and happenings that everyone should know, the other is threads on a website that are inactive, dead, taking up space, and can be easily recreated.

And here's some thought, too. Suppose you collect plants. If one dies, it dies, but you still keep it. And you get more and more, and eventually, you've got a collection of dead plants just taking up space. It's time to get rid of them. Same goes for forum posts.

Ah, but there is a search box. It is used to look back at old threads, to answer questions one might have. There would be no use if old threads would only be deleted. It's good to keep old threads, it's like a library.

But there's no real point if they're locked.

Yes, there is. To view certain old posts that answer a question, or teach you how to do something. I don't think anyone would bother to recreate those type of threads.

Most of those types of threads have been done so many times that deleting the really old ones would help free up some of the room on the servers. They serve no real purpose and are just taking up space. If it is something that should be kept then all they have to do is put it in a meta sticky to keep it from being deleted. Quite frankly most of the people don't actually use the search any way and if they did it could point them to the sticky.

I think that if there is a server space issue, Achronos would be the one to know. Until he decides that it would be better to delete old threads, I really don't see any reason to get rid of them.

Ach! Was ist los?

I don't think posts actually get deleted after a time; we've still got some from the first days of the New Hawtness floating around.

But old forum topics aren't dead plants. The oldies don't really clutter or take up space. They don't even smell. Think of the old topics as an archive. You can look through them and find information if you want and if you don't -- well they aren't really in your way. The forum places new topics on the top of the index not the bottom. Don't look for new topics on index page 50 or 100.
