Yes, I know a mod is going to lock this thread with a witty comment.
Yes, I will get flamed.
Yes, I will have made my point.

Locking a thread with no explaination is somthing I find sort of, odd. Every parent knows that if you punish a child with out tell them what they have done. They may very well do it again.

Bungie should apply the same principle to this site. If someone make a thread that a mod locks with out saying anything...

How do they know what they did wrong?
How do they stop from doing it again?

Just a thought I wanted to put out there

No, this probably won't be locked with a sarcky comment, almost all of the mods are pretty ok with these kinds of questions. Most often, the reason is so blatantly obvious an explanation is not needed, usually for the thread blatantly (or subtly) breaking a rule. You may also find that the mod in question has PM'd the offender with a warning and explanation, though sometimes, it is a teeny bit inexplicable why threads are locked, which is why maybe a tickbox system similar to the blacklisting system may work well with the thread locking, that, or it'll be an unnecessary annoyance.

They lock them with no explanation for at least two reasons:

1. If they comment on a thread, it gets bumped to the top.

2. If something is a clear violation of the forum rules and needs no comments.

Since people always create this type of thread after they realize one of their threads were locked without an explination, I took the liberty of looking through The Flood to see if I can find a thread of yours that was locked recently. I came across this one, so I'm assuming this is what you are referring to.

Sometimes we don't leave a post because we figure people actually read the rules. Silly to think that, isn't it? Anyway, if somebody were to actually read the rules, they would notice:
The flood is not a journal, blog or chat room! DO NOT POST YOUR PERSONAL STORIES HERE! Please use the flood forum to discuss interesting things. Like upcoming video games, cars, technology, books, anime, manga, sports etc..
Me, nor any of the other moderators, are here to spoon feed you the rules. If you don't feel like taking the time to read them, I sure as hell don't feel like taking the time to explain every single one to you once you break it.

Moderators aren't your parents, and this isn't your home. Play by the rules here and you'll be fine. Moderators don't have to explain why a thread was locked. But sometimes they do for clarification.

Sometimes you can tell when a user is new or doesn't come here often and posts something in the wrong place.

Instead of Locking, an explanation is needed (wanted) instead of locking it without closure. Remember- the community's questions should be answered when things aren't clear.

However, when things are clear (inappropiate threads, Rules being broken, bumping) then an explanation isn't needed. Actually, sometimes one for Bumping. Yeah, bumping should always be told to the user who breaks the rule- so that it isn't done in the future.

All in all, I think the system is fine. Very rarely are threads that are obscure with respect to what's outlined in the rules are locked without reason.

And I know you guys aren't here to "Spoon Feed" the rules, but when a member doesn't understand something (and someone didn't already link them to the rules), then I think just a little link to them wouldn't hurt (which is done anyway, most of the time.)

Other than a few minor problems, the Locking system works.

Well, they can always ask a moderator. it's not that hard to send a PM to one of the mods. Even if he isn't the one that locked it.

You know what's really irritating?
When you are writing a response and suddenly some jerk already locks it, before you had the chance to finish that explanation!

But some of the ninja are here for a short time, are moving swiftly and silently and if they can (in 10 minutes) lock 15 threads that needed locking instead of only getting to 3-5 because they were taking the time to explain their actions.... Well, to me, getting the 15 improper threads is a better use of their limited time.

Agreed. It is a better use of your time, and I also think that PM's are the way to go.

But when you're dealing with members that don't know that (or weren't given the suggestion,) then you get the "Why was my thread locked" topics.

I'm all for the PM system and whatnot, but not everyone is aware of the benefits and would rather make a topic because the Topic Button is right there and they're confused as to what happened.

More or less, it's not that much of a problem, in my eyes. I don't see those threads that often anymore, but when I do I can only help but feel for the guy. Then again, he should know better than to start a thread about Colons =)
