Well I am thinking about working on building a PC or maybe ordering one. I am just wondering what I should shoot for. I don't want to blow ten grand on a computer but I still wan't a fairly nice one.

I don't really know what my price range should be either. I am open to suggestions. Like I said before I don't want to spend that much money though.

I would want it to be Vista compatible and I'm not really sure what I should go for. It would be a desktop not a laptop too by the way.

Check Hyde's suggested setups. http://pcgamingnetwork.14.forumer.com/viewtopic.php?p=41#41

Around 1K if you wan't a play any of the newer games *cough* Crysis *cough*. Definitely go for dual core. A 7600gt should suffice for now if you plan on upgrading when Dx10 comes out, though higher end cards aren't that much more expensive. At least 1 gig of ram.

The few, the proud, the leet.

3 to 4 thousand would get you a great system. A bit more for your accessories like a monitor, speakers, and such.

edit: of course by great, I mean going all out.

Well, My laptop is perfect. It runs all games(Even Oblivion)on MAXED. Serious.

Here are my specs:
Dell Insprion E1705 Notebook
Intel Centrino Duo T2600 2.16 GHz processor
2 GB RAM
NVIDIA 256MB GeForce 7900 GS Go
80 GB 7200rpm Hard Drive
Bluetooth Audio and Integrated HD Audio
Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2
Mcafee Firewall
17" TrueLife HD Monitor
Windows Vista Capable

And yes, I have a mouse. It's a Logitech Optical Laser Mouse. Got it for $14.00. But I still have the regular built-in laptop keyboard. But, I like it, so I probably won't get another keyboard.

I got my laptop for $2050.00. Yeah, its expensive, but when I put this Hardware in an XPS with a 12" screen, and a 7400 TurboCache graphics card, it totaled up to $4400.00. So I got a better deal getting the Inspiron than the XPS(I mean, I could get a better graphics card and monitor than the XPS laptop).

Oh and, I forgot to mention that Dell threw in a Free Skin for my laptop. I chose a Louisville Cardinals Skin. A skin is a sticker thats fits the whole back of the laptop. My skin is Red, while the rest of my laptop is silver, which makes a real good color combination.

I know you said you didn't want a laptop, but this beats alot of desktops.

Don't get an XPS man, the guy from Dell said the XPS series is really just the name and its design. I mean, I totaled up a price for an XPS laptop, and it came up with $4400. When I totaled up a price for an Inspiron, with BETTER specs, It came up with $2050.00. And it's Vista Compat. Sure to run Vista Ultimate. Trust me, just don't get an XPS.

If you build it yourself your going to want to get the components from one place like Newegg.com or zipzoomfly.com. Thos site will have everything you need, shipping will be fast and reasonable, and they have good return policies.

The most important thing you must do is get a motherboard with the latest socket and PCI Express video slot. That way it will be a while until you are forced to upgrade because of your motherboard is out of date, AGP is being phased out. The other componenets don't have to be the latest because you will have the luxury of upgrading in the future.

Even though nothing right now utilizes dual-core, Vista and futures games will all take advantage of it so its a good idea to get a dual-core even if its a low end.

As far as AMD vs. Intel, three months ago I would have said AMD without hesitation. It looks like Intel woke up because the industry has been talking about the new Intel chips are blowing the doors off AND running cooler then ever. If the test I have been looking at are correct and AMD doesn't have an answer for them, Intel will be the way to go.

It cost me about 500 bucks to build my computer 3 years ago. And my 9250 is still kicking.....

  • 09.23.2006 7:28 AM PDT

Still, making my own gaming rig would take alot of work, first step, does the case come with stuff to attack the motherboard 2nd.. i dont want to spend over $10,000 just for my computer.

The computer in my sig cost me $1,500 to build. If you want to buy a pc for gaming, check out ABS Computers. They always get good reviews and they have good prices. Although you're never gonna get as cheap buying as you would from building high-end.

Of course you can take the route I took, buy a pre-built computer for $500, put in a Geforce 7300 GT, make sure it has an AMD Athalon 64 3500+ or above (I have a 3700+) and a Gig of Ram. Update as nessesary. In all my games at 1024X768 resolution I get a steady 30 FPS in Halo even when running FRAPS, HL2 runs over 40 FPS when I have HDR on in Lost Coast, in EP:1 its over 50, and Doom 3 runs in Ultra Quality with all settings MAXed. I don't know about what you will need for Crisis, but so far my computer has taken everything I have thrown at it.

Around $700 to $800.

I agree and disagree on some things:
1.You don't need a Dual-Core processor, I have a Centrino Duo and its great.
2.You don't need a 7950. All of the 7 series are fine(I would recommend a 7900 or higher though). The 7900 is at $200, great price. Can't tell much difference between a 7950 and a 7900.
3.No, you don't need 1.5 GB of RAM, 1 GB is fine.
4.Agreed. But I have 8X DVD, 32X CD-ROM, in one disk drive. You don't need 2 separate drives. Just get a combo.
5.My sound card is fine, its integrated HD, and its in surround sound goodness.
6.Definitely a must. PCI-E is the only format good graphics cards come in(NVIDIA 7 series)

So far ROBO LEADERS route seems best to me. Not too expensive!
I don't care about having the best top notch video settings there are. I just want a descent Vista capable PC to play Halo 2 and other games on. (And, sadly, for homework)
