I really want that Physics card..have you seen CellFactor? Lol..

you dont need a physics card to run cell factor. the point remains that there is minimal performance gains with it and sometimes the performance goes the other way. dont bother with one yet. no to mention I can count on one hand the games that take advantage of it.
Well, I can see Cell Factor's MP as a combatant to Halo 2's in my mind..so I'll mainly be playing CellFactor, GRAW, Halo PC/CE, F.E.A.R on my PC and nothing on my 360 (It broke) and nothing on my Xbox (Halo 2 is boring now).

If I can get it now, pretty much for free, I think it would be cool to get it now and not need to worry about it later on.

I'll be getting my PC system for a combination of Birthday and Xmas, meaning I will get the $1,500 system and get nothing else for my Bday or Xmas, and hand all my random money over from other relatives and things I may be selling (Like my iPod and many Xbox and PS2 games).

I'll pay for an extra 2GB of RAM to add on, and a higher-end Video Card. Any suggestions?

Come to think of it..does anyone want to buy a relatively new iPod nano for $120? Howbout some Xbox games (Like GR2, Rainbow Six 3 and Lockdown, Splinter Cell, etc.), let me know, I may make another account on Ebay ;)

Now I just have to start savin up. Hopefully I will be ready by this summer or so. (I'm not trying to build this right away.) I hope Vista is like 300 bucks or less because I have heard on some article, (I forget where) that Vista won't be worth the money to upgrade from XP. Basically if it's over 300- maybe 350 bucks I won't be getting it untill the price goes down.

I also have another question. We have a very old Gateway 2000 computer with Windows 95 on it. I'm just wondering if there might be anything I could salvage off of that. I doubt it though, its ancient. Maybe the case... nah.

w00t!!!!!
My topic has that cool fire logo! This is my first one!

Ouch, MLG you're spending >$1500, and still have a 6200 selected? I understand that you're getting a monitor, but you should be able to at least fit in a 7900 with that price. At least I did, about 5 months ago...

Geforce 7200? I'll look into that..I need to sell a bunch of my gaming stuff and an iPod I don't need, so I may get a grand total of 300-400$..how much is a 7200 card?

EDIT: I'm going to drop the PhysX card till I need one..that will knock 3 hundred off the price, so I think I'll have enough to knock my RAM up to 4GB and get a better (or 2 average) video cards as well..

You didn't need to pm me and post both you know?

But since you insist, this was my basic reply: "you are wrong"

Firstly, emachines and tigerdirect, both bad choices.

Second, AMD x1600 is in no way the best. It is a medium range card, nearing it's low-med days now. The fact that you spent extra money to raise it to 512 MB video memory is what I was pointing out. The normal 256 version barely uses up 256, 512 is a huge waste. That's like saying "look at my uber maxed up car! I put fans on the back so it goes faster!!!! it wins!!! your teh wrong!"

Lastly, I suggest you research before you launch into a public argument...it doesn't feel good to get proved wrong, I know.

Wow, 4 gig? Save that money for something else. Put it towards the graphics card. You will be utterly fine with 2 gig, go to 3 gig if you want overkill, but 4??

New ram prices are reasonable, but will lower. Not point in paying for something you wont use just yet. And ram is possibly the most easiest thing to upgrade.

Just a quick note about graphics cards. The RAM is mostly 256, but 512 is coming commonplace now. There is very few games that take advantage of 512mb of ram. You would be far better off getting a better card with 256mb.

And once more, anyone getting a crossfire or SLI setup has more money than sense.

1.You don't need a Dual-Core processor, I have a Centrino Duo and its great.

Are you implying that the Centrino Duo isnt a dual core processor? Because it sure is.

I built my system for around $650 (will buy DX10 G80 later).

AMD Athlon X2 4600+ overclocked to 2.6ghz
Gigabite M55-SLi Motherboard
2x 80GB SATA 3.0gbps in RAID 0
Ultra 550watt Modular power supply
DVD/CD-RW
Antec P180B (shinyness)
nVidia 6600GT

I do not reccomend the case for beginners. Its complicated to get around in and it requires a Modular PSU unless you want to route cables into places they arent stuposto go :)

Tell you what, lets customise it for him.

Motherboard:

Deciding factor:
Processor type. Up to you really. Basically, you cant go wrong with either conroe or AMD AM2 processors. Just get the best you can go for. Whatever you get, its going to be dual core.
Try not to get abit, they seem to have an issue with putting crappy fans on the mobo. Other then that, great boards.
As well as all the normal stuff, make sure its got enough USB ports for you to use.

Powersupply:
Deciding factor:
What connections you need. Basically, just get a good one (loook at reviews) thats at least 450Watts. More if for some reason your going SLI or Crossfire.

Case.
Whatever you think looks nice. Make sure its not some stupid form factor. That its got enough bays and its not got more sharp edges than a knife factory.

Memory:
Basically, just look what type your motherboard takes, and buy that. Dont be fooled by CAS latency, anything 3 or under is ok. Ignore the half wits saying you will see a difference with less CAS than 3. Id recommend 2 Gig at least, 3 at most.

Hard drive:
Totally up to you. Your the one who knows what your using it for, so therefore how much space you need. A few provisos tho. Makes sure its at least 7200 spin speed. Sata, obviously. 8MB or more of cache would be good too.

Optical drive:
DVD burner. With how cheap they are now, its stupid not too. Make sure its dual layer, most are nowadays. Try to find a quiet one. Make sure it matches your case (unless the case has bezels).

Floppy drive:
I suggest getting the ones with lots of card readers built in. You never know when some stupid thing might need a floppy. For about £12 (whats that in $'s?) its worth doing. Again, make sure it matches the case.

Graphics card:
Nvidea or ATI? Who cares, except fanboys? Go for what you think looks best. Basically, buy the rest of your system and spend as much as you have left on the card. Id advise against SLI or Crossfire, both rather pointless but its up to you.

Monitor:
I'll echo what I said earlier. A 19" would do you lovely. Make sure its got a decent res, and preferably but not essential is a DVI output. Its up to you if you want to go widescreen or not. My personal preferance is not. But a must is 8MS response or lower. One thing people forget is that TFTs are bigger than CRTs in viewing terms.
My 19" TFT has the same viewing area as my old 21" CRT. Thats no lie.

Power protection:
I know I said it before, but its worth saying ten times over. Just spend a few $s on an anti surge plug. Its so damned worth it.

Theres an impartial guide to your own PC. Hope it helps.

Edited - I just cant spell these days.
