I think mods should start banning people for just being stupid in the flood.

put out a message to stop posting crap all the time.

The Flood is often stupid and that is not a bannable offense. The mods are busy enough with looking out for spam, flaming, and lemon parties.

The Flood is for discussion ranging from a multitude of different subjects. Gendo is right though, stupid "crap" is posted alot over there.

As for IP bans, they wouldn't work.
Straight from the Overlord:
IP Bans are not something easily done, as IP addresses are often dynamic. With a large ISP, a person's IP address can change every time they reboot their computer, and it may not even be in the same subnet. So, while we can IP ban people, we prefer not to - as it likely it wouldn't help.

The True Trolls of b.net break up the monotonous, repetitive nonsense found throughout these forums with humor, wit, the occasional well deserved pimp-slap, and whatever other actions are necessary to keep it entertaining. In this case, the following is required:

For anyone who knows who this is (forgive me for bringing up his name), would you consider Mr. Crapper a spammer or a troll?

Because I consider him both. I see them as one in the same. I don't know much about him, but from what I've seen, he would spam the forums excessivly. But people would always say "Don't feed the Troll" when dealing with him.

And sure, some may find humor in Trolls, but I don't consider shock sites to be humorous. Some Trolls can make me laugh sometimes, but for the most part they're just here to cause trouble, which is why they end up getting banned.

Guess it's subjective then.

Whereas some may see Spammers as the same as Trolls, others may see them as different.

I do know one thing: Bungie.net is a cycle. We have periods of peace, then periods of "war." I'm not going to say that we're in that period right now, but there are a few Trolls/spammers coming up as of late.

But the problem will (should) fix itself.

Fact:

Spammers are hated by The Trolls just as much as they are hated by regular members.

Myth:

Carlos Mencia is funny.

  • 09.25.2006 8:10 AM PDT

The spammers eventually get bored and stop.

The Trolls stay forever and can never stop (no matter how much they might try).

I prefer The Trolls, since what a real Troll does is add a little humor into a forum/thread that takes things too seriously. But if the The Troll(s) take it too far, I treat them like a spammer (someone who just posts high volume, low content stuff).

And please remember people, don't feed the spammers. And if somebody bypasses the profanity filter, DO NOT QUOTE THEM! You'd figure that would be common sense, but it isn't. I'm going to start handing out blacklistings for that...

Troll Definitions:

troll: as in lower case. Spammer, lamer, poser, loser, wanna be poster of low IQ with grammatical skills of a first grader. Uses common disruptive thread tactics such as name calling, cliche mom jokes and overt attacks upon ninjas to garner attention not given to him by any of his 14 step dads.

Troll: as in upper case. Long standing forum members of high IQ and rapier sharp wit. Uses highly intuitive and satirical humor to add excitement and fun to threads. Walks the line between acceptible posting behavior that may result in a weeks vacation. But in the end, fun was had by all...........including ninja chuckling under his breath as he doles out said blacklisting.

Strange evolution how people have come to believe
That we are it's greatest achievement
We're barely, we're just a collection of cells
Overrating themselves

People feed the Trolls because most of the time, they don't know they are being Trolled. Others feed them on purpose because they know The Trolls usually don't show up in a thread unless its the 23rd "Bring back the Pistol" thread of the day, or just a generally stupid post.

The Trolls that I know, are here to bring a little levity to Bungie.net. Kpaul, Frankie and others do well at maintaining a level of humor in the news stories and updates from Bungie, but the forums are usually lacking in the humor department.

Please dont confuse spammers/flamers with Trolls. Its insulting.

Depends on what you consider a Troll.

I suppose we all have our own interpretation on the subject.

Here Here...Twinkie speaks for me. And for my mother..

A Troll is like a freshly baked roll, good and satisfying. A Spammer is like eating SPAM everyday of your life, its annoying and you get sick of it.

Do you consider Soviet Jackal a troll? I do. He spammed, he flammed, he always entered a thread with the intent on ruining it.

But he did make people laugh. In the end though, he was just another bad apple.

And Charizard? Classic troll. Shock sites, Halo 2 leaks.

So in the end, it depends on your own interpretation. Some see shrewd people as Trolls, I see them as Devil's advocate, so to speak.

<--------Has forgotten what this thread was about.

*checks Original Post*

Oh yeah. The topic was "Are there more trolls."

Then we started debating on the definition of a "troll." Well to answer the Original Post, I say that there's sort of an increase. But Bungie.net has always been like this, at least that's what they tell me.

DO NOT DO IT! DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT DOING IT! DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT NOT DOING IT!

Now think, there is one thing that pops up here.

Halo

They are in all of the Halo Forums but the Maw forum. Strange, most of us came to this site by Halo. When I joined up back in '05, I was only posting in the Halo 2 forums... So we need to combat these idoits, one thing though.

HOW!

That's what spammers do (high volume/low content), not Trolls (consider them the "spice" of Bungie.net, just adds a little flavor). I know it's just semantics, but that's what some of us are trying to get across...
