On halo CE, I suddenly started to get this error message whenever I tried to play any map. Example: Say I wanted to play blood gultch. I would go to LAN, click blood gultch, select a game type, and hit start. It would give me the loading screen, but then, Halo minimizes, and gives me a small error message that reads "Gathering Exception Data". Then the game just crashes. Anyone have a solution that doesn't invlove reinstalling the whole game?

Oi. GED errors occur when the map hasn't been properly loaded or when the program is forced to do something it wasn't supposed to do. I would suggest un/reinstalling Halo, since this is the only way to reinstall the maps fully and properly.

Sorry, dude.

Yeh, exceptions are only created when there is an extraordinary circumstance Halo cannot possible do. Like if you mess up the map (for all you wanna-be 'modders' out there), and try to, say, replace a model tag with a projectile :P

Or if your Halo executable is messed up in anyway, which I really doubt.

My suggestion is to whip out your Halo CD, browse to "FileCabs" and open up "Cab6.cab" and there will be a 'Maps' folder. Extract it. Replace all maps (including bitmaps.map, because the can get messed up too, sometimes) in the"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo\MAPS" folder. If all else fails, re-install Halo.

Pay close attention to this section:
Other Programs Interfering:
Some programs can cause Halo to crash if you run them at the same time. Some versions of Xfire and certain video cards are known to cause Halo CE to crash and generate a "Gathering Exception" error. Before starting Halo CE turn off all other programs; Turn off your MP3 player, Turn off Xfire, Turn off your Instant messenger (AIM, AOL, MSN, Yahoo). Turn off all programs not absolutely needed to run the operating system.

Any mods? If not, get the original maps and overwrite yours, as they're likely corrupted.

Firstoff, enough with the messaging! The thread exsists for the purpose of solving the GED errors.

Secondly, cream, did you try all UXB's suggestions? He's got some pretty nice info there...

Hi everyone,

I am posting here because I cannot create a new topic for some odd reason. But I think the problem i'm having right now is related to this issue.

This is my first visit to the Bungie forums and I have a quick question. Can someone explain to me what a buffer overrun is? This happens a lot when I play an intense multiplayer game online and the game closes and shows "Buffer Overrun detected!" How can I avoid this next time?
Oh yeah. There are many times where the game just locks up and I can't move anything...even the mouse cursor. I can't return to the desktop and I have to force-shutdown my computer. Why does this happen?

Thanks.

It's not that you can't create a new topic for some odd reason, it's because the Bungie forums don't allow new members to create new topics within the first twenty four hours of being registered. That means if you're a new user, you have to wait 24 hours as of completing your registration before you can make a new topic. In fact, if you actually paid attention to the top of the Maw webpage (or any other forum for that matter) it would say something like "New users must wait 24 hours before they can make a new topic."

Once 24 hours have passed, the "New Topic" option will be available on the top of the page.

Ooohhhhh. I see now. Sorry, I am a very impatient person as you can see. Ok, I'll wait a few hours before posting my new topic. Sorry for this incovenience....

Oh, I don't mind. I'm not a very patient person, myself. But seeing as you don't type like an illiterate seven year old I'll be nicer to you than most. :) I was eager to post a new topic when I first signed up on Bungie.net as well. Good thing I caught that "New users must wait 24 hours" notice.
