Ok, so it finally hit me when I got Call of Duty 2 yesterday. My Intel graphics card couldn't run it, so I said "To hell with this torture! I need a new graphics card."

I went to the nearby Best Buy after school today and saw a great selection on graphics cards. One of the man working there helped me choose the right one for my computer, and as a side note, he was nice as well. xD There was a bunch of Nvidia GeForce FX5200 cards for 80 dollars, so I decided to save up for it (which might take me more than a month to be exact, but through hell or not, I need a new graphics card). And the reason I'm not ordering the best deals from newegg.com or bestbuy.com is because my parents does not want me ordering stuff online, the only way I can buy/get stuff I want is through manually buying it myself with my own money, or Christmas/birthday.

But I have some questions. Yes, I know this card, compared to other good cards out there is sort of bad, but I like it. It'll give me the shiny effect in Halo right (I'm pretty sure it will, but I'm making sure)? And I'm not sure if this is going to happen, considering this isn't such a GREAT card, but will my PC bottleneck it? (hopefully, and most likely not) Here's my specs:

Intel Celeron 2.4 GHz processor
248 MB RAM (Yes, I'm also going to save up for an extra 256 MB RAM stick, so don't mention the RAM...)

Thank you for any answers.

yay, ipjuunin has seen the light.
Edit: what kind of graphics card does your motherboard support? pci, agp or pci-e? And why don't your parents want you from saving money!?....I say you should plan out a good argument, and calmly and maturely discuss with your parents about ordering online.

*heavenly song plays in the background*
*Hallelujah! Hallelujah!* ...song continues while I post...

Yeah, finally I'll get to see shiny Halo armor, Halo grass, and I'll be able to play Call of Duty2.

EDIT: Holy crapz0rz to the millionth power smeared in Master Chief blood!!! There's a FX5200 for 31 dollars?! I would so buy that, but then read on my original post. You'll see why I can't buy/order from the internet...=(

FX 5200 is no longer the best PCI graphics card. Try the ATI Radeom X1300.

There was a few X1300's in the Best Buy I went to, but...

1) They were for AGP, I only have PCI... =/

2) They had new orders of the PCI versions of X1300's, but they cost over 120 bucks. The only thing that went through my mind was "wtf, I'm better off stripping in the newegg.com site than buying from here..."

So yeah, you get the point. xD

An FX5200 is only really good for Halo, not much else. A 6600 would help to play CoD 2. But if you ever wanna play Oblivion on a 5200, think again.

P.S:I got a 6200 at Best Buy for $160. I got ripped-off. So please don't go to BB and make the same mistake I did.

Here you will need this to help you get your foot out of the back of your throat, looks llike its in there pretty deep. And what is that on your face? Egg?! *hands Kim a washcloth*

Dude, x1300 for 120 is such a better value than the fx5200 for 80. the fx5200 is pure crap, no getting around it.

If you want to play Oblivion on that 5200, you need to download an unofficial Oldblivion patch and install it, you'll have rock bottom details, untextured water, and 10 fps.

And I checked, there is a very rare version of Radeon X1300 for PCI. http://www.visiontek.com

It's available at newegg too.

But I don't even play any of the Elder Scrolls series...o.O

Lol, and yeah, the 5200 is pretty bad compared to other decent cards out there, but I don't know if 6600 is a PCI card, and if it is, Best Buy doesn't have it...=/

No offense, but your better off saving for a bullet. Because when you try to play any decent game(newer ones) with that card, youll want to put it right between your eyes. I used to have a FX5500 and i would get maybe 25 fps on halo on 900x600 res on med-high. Then i custom built my rig and got a 7600GT. TRUST ME ON THIS ONE. BUILD A RIG!!!! /end rant

Rant wasn't nessacery, because I know I should just build my own high end custom gaming PC. But if I can't afford a 120 dollar X1300 card, DO YOU really think I'll be able to afford 1000 bucks to build a custom PC? Seriously, reading original posts are important.

My apologies, and yes, that wasent necessary. But if you manage to save like $500-600 i will send you a list of parts if your interested.

Np man, I wasn't mad at all. Yeah, sometimes when I get a new PC game (for example, Call of Duty 2, which I can't run anyways without a new graphics card...-.-), I always brag to my friends who don't have it and wants it badly. So I know how it feels to be excited, don't worry. xD

And sure, but by the time I'll ahve my own part time job, it'll be roughly three years from now. But sure, once I get 500-600 dollars saved, I'll remember to PM you for good parts. =)

The FX5500 is a good cheap card. I just got one to take the place of my crapics. I can now play with everything on high and 0...Well a normal smooth ping meaning no lag. Only prob is my router sucks so I warp -_-' (warped the same before I got the new card)
Don't buy the FX5500 from best buy for $80.00 I got mine for like $63.00 when I got it from newegg.

best of luck.

I have an old old one sitting on my shelf...I can't believe it's worth $80 somewhere...impossible, that card really really is not good. I'd suggest taking a look at the ATi equivalent, even though I'm an nvidia guy. But it will run halo on full, that it will do. I think.

Yeah, I'm still sort of pissed off about Best Buy being cheap jerks (although the workers there are nice...), and the fact that tehy didn't have the most common, the benchmark of all Nvidia GeForce cards, the FX5500. And I'm also screwed because I can't get stuff online, no matter how cheap the prices and good the deals are, my parents are not permitting me to order online.

Ah well, like you said, at lest the 5200 will work Halo pretty fine. And CoD2 will finally be played on my PC! =D

Stupid parents let their stupid children play games that are rated M when they should be playing Big Birds Spelling Adventures

Also the AR is actually good in CQB now and no longer a glorified baseball bat.

NEVER SHOP AT BEST BUY!!!

They ripped off several of my relatives. The only time I shop there is to pricematch and make them lose money.

dont even bother with that card, if you are concered about playing games with at least average fps with good detail and what not, you should go to tomshardwareguide.com and click on vega charts. it will tell you which graphics card is good and for what price. plus i recomened you throw out your old mother board and get one that has an agp port. PCI is ancient history and a pci (regular version not express) x1300 is no where near as good as a agp version of it. and yeah you can find motherboards under $50. but i dont know what kind of cpu you have. is it a socket 478 or an eariler version? but anyways, i figure if you have at least 150 bucks to burn you should get a new mother board with agp and either a 6600gt or a 9600xt. well thats my 2 cents.

So yeah, halo will work. Cod2 may be...a little low-ish. The main problem I had before was extremely lonnggg loading times...but that's not much to do with graphics card, and my new hd and ram solved that.

Cod2 is fun though, perhaps I'll see you online. doubtful since I rarely play.

Thank you Pet0sh for clearing that out to coolio.

Coolio, there's over 20 posts way above you. Read them and find out WHY I can't buy a better card. Sheesh...

All right, I have perfectly calculated the amount of time it'll take me to save up 83 bucks for the 5200 on the bus to school, and unless anything totally retarded happens (robbery, losing money, not getting allowance, price goes up, etc. but God forbid), I should be having 1337 shiny graphics with my new FX5200 within 6 weeks exact. I know it's a long time, but one must suffer to gain a bigger reward. =)

What I mean by "shiny" is you know how integrated cards makes Halo look like the n64 starfox games? (since integrated cards are 2d performance, not 3d accelarator) The FX5200 will give me 3D'ish armors, see-able grass, and shiny, and detailed warthogs am I right? And MOST IMPORTANTLY, the blood, bullet/plasma holes, and shadows? I'm pretty sure it does, anything above Intel 900 series all the way to the best graphics cards out there can give you the real Halo settings (like the Xbox kinda graphics).
