The main difference...

Pistol - way to overpowered
Battle Rifle - fair with the other weapons

Not in the hands of the skilled, it isn't.

Simple law of Ballistics. A Rifle will always be more powerful and more accurate then a pistol. The fact that a pistol was your mainstay weapon in Halo was completely unrealistic.

Not true. Think about it: 15 rounds a SECOND, 7.62 mm ammo, with a full 60 rounds and almost 5 seconds of continuous fire! NOONE, not even the CHIEF, can hit the pinhead with every round, as you almost could with the M6D (which, by the way, IS more powerful - it's like what, 12.7 mm?), wielding the AR.

7.62 mm could blow your wrist off. 15 rounds/sec is INSANE to keep that accurate. 12.7 mm could take half your FACE OFF. Plus, it's semi-auto. (Yes, yes the manual says it's "full-auto," only because you can hold the trigger down. It still fires just as fast, with just as much time to counter the recoil. It actually is more innaccurate when holding it down, so clicking off rounds, like bursts with the AR, is much more accurate.)

The definition of "Rifle" is very loose - it depends on the caliber bullet, and means of firing, that determines accuracy and power.

"What's in a name?"

Um, you'd have to be clearly blind not to call the pistol NOT overpowered...

1. Three shots per kill
2. Scope
3. No tracer unlike the sniper rifle
4. Enough ammo per clip to kill 4 people
5. 120 extra ammo total (I think)
6. Reasonable rate of fire
7. Unrealisticly accurate (for a gun with no barrel)
8. No restrictions when running (you still hit 100% the same when you run as when you are standing still)
9. Reasonable reload time
10. Reasonable melee time
11. Single Handed weapon

I recall a long time ago even Bungie themselfs stated it was overpowered...

It's ooly 3 to kill if you get a headshot on that last round, but even THAT's kind of simple....No weapon in halo suffers in any way when running, either.

Except the SPNKr, when you swivel really fast and fire and it goes like backwards....

Fromwhat I'v seen the BR is completely different from the pistol. If you'll notice, the pistol has exploding rounds--that's what makes it so lethal(and the zoom). Just shoot a ROCK wall--it seems to hit twice. From the E-3 demo it does nt seem that the BR will have explosive rounds therefor will not be quite as awsum.
I ALMOST wish it was gone though, just to even the tide for people without them.

Sorry Spartan 021, "Absolutely true. Think about it." Why are Sniper Rifles rifles and not Sniper Pistols?

Simple Ballistics:

POWER: The power of any given round is a function of it's muzzle velocity and mass. A slug is projected out of the barrel by the expansion of hot gasses caused by a combustive reaction of chemicals. The moment the slug exits the barrel the expansion of hot gasses no longer acts upon the bullet and expands into the infinite atmosphere. The longer the barrel, the longer the expanding gasses have to act upon the slug increasing muzzle velocity and thus the power. A longer barrel means a more power.

ACCURACY: Modern barrels are threaded with a spiral pattern along it's length. These threads channel the explosive gases in a circular fashion giving the slug "spin". The more spin the slug gets the more aerodynamic and the more stable its flight. Thus, the longer the barrel. The more accurate the weapon is. (The sniper rifle in Halo is an exception. It uses fins for stabilization. Something our modern firearms don't.)

Rate of fire is something else entirely and is harder on pistols then rifles. Recoil is harder to control on a pistol, throwing off the aim. Also the heating of the barrel also changes the way a round is projected. The pistol with it's shorter barrel dissipates heat less effectively.

There are 7.62mm rifles and they aren't INSANE to keep accurate. Modern militaries stopped using them in WW2 because they overpenetrate doing little damage to their targets beyond leaving neat holes. 5.56mm (may be off, I'm rusty) are more conventionally used because they are more likely to deform and veer in the body causing more advanced trauma.

I'm trying to state the Pistol has no real disadvantages... I mean, yeah, up close the rockets and shotguns will be lethal and from afar the sniper rifles will be as well, but all those weapons are not good at every situation.... You see, the pistol is good at EVERYTHING, you can litterly use it in any situation in Halo... The really isn't any major negatives. (Rocket launcher = slow reload and rate of fire)

and as I said, Bungie even mentioned it wasn't balanced with the other weapons from an older (much older) article...

Headshots were easy as heck too...

When most games revolves around one single weapon, you know something has to be wrong...

when somebody has a shield the bullet wouldnt overpenetrate...
halo is a game and maybe the pistol has some type of future human technology yet to be discovered that makes it so accurate and deadly ;) but of course following tht line of thought the assault rifle would be even more deadly
the pistol is too powerful because anyone who plays with experts knows tht the pistol is used almost all the time and is the standard weapon of almost every fight ... look at vids of major tournaments like the AGP and MLG
the only other weapons that are effective in a real halo game with experts besides the pistol are the sniper rifle (in the hands of somebody tht gets almost all headshots), the rocket, and the shotgun at extremely close range
but part of the reason tht the pistol is so overpowered is because it takes the most skill (besides the sniper) to use... now if we were all good enough to get all headshots we would be complaining about the sniper... because in truth u could use tht also from close to far range its just very very hard to..
i say have faith in bungie and wht they will produce they will find a good solution to this problem while still making sure there is some skill involved in playing halo (otherwise wht would be the point)
there must be skill involved in using halo s weapons because i know with the pistol when im playing i try to 3 shot ppl but obviously if u r playing against really good ppl this is close to impossible and 4-6 shot occurs more often... to actually get all 3 shots from close to far range while under fire is near impossible

*laughs* Don't be. I'm an amateur author and a bit of a physics junkie. When you write, and care about authenticity you learn a lot about the strangest things.

My general point was only that I loved the Pistol. I only wished it was a rifle since I'd have believed it more. You see... knowing all that crap makes you really hyper-critical. I want to believe Halo is "real" but some things don't let you.

Do you know what I think is funny? Why the heck in the 2500's we'd still be using cased ammunition?

guys, the pistol has made it into halo 2, simply look at the screen where there is a red elite w/ a battle rifle and another one jumping very high avoiding needler shots. Now, look at where those plasma bullets(the blue ones)are going, and look at what the blue spartan has in his hand... A PISTOL, so its not the question of whether it made it into the game, but how it changed

that would be cool, if halo was real... i sometimes do think it could be possible, maybe w/ another species instead of humans of course, but think about it..............

How can you tell if thats a pistol? The blue Spartan is so small you cannot even depict what he is holding.
