I wish people would do their homework before bashing Bungie...
This game has been in development for quite a while before now, seeing as there is fully playable portions of it already. In any case, Halogen may have been planed to take place at the beginning of the war, like Halo Wars is, but who says that Bungie hadn't already come up with a basic storyline for a game that is based at the beginning of the Covenant War? The Halo Bible for all we know covers events from the beginning of the Spartan Program all the way until the end of the UNSC's war with the Covenant. Thus it is coincidence. Besides, there are quite a few people who have created fanfics, on their own, without seeing others ideas, based at the beginning of the war. Just because Bungie announced it last, doesn't mean they didn't think of it first. And just because they announced it now, doesn't mean they only just started working on it a few months ago, RTS games take a hell of a lot longer to make than FPS's, this game may have been in the works since before Ensemble got their XBox 360 dev kits. Perhaps not likely, but the idea that Bungie stole somone else's idea for the basis of a game story is so rediculous I can't understand how people could think that.
Halogen was shut down in advance of this announcement because it's a competitor, and a very big one too, as I am sure Microsoft is hoping that Halo PC gamers, who have resisted the 360 thus far, are drawn in by the siren call of a Halo RTS.
This is one PC gamer who won't be getting a 360 ever, even if they release Halo Wars for FREE. RTS belongs on the PC, and quite frankly seeing Halo Wars being for the 360 is insulting, no RTS on a console has ever done as well, or been as good as, it's PC counterpart, or any PC RTS. This is not the same sinario as video game movies always being bad, thats due to idiots being given the rights to make them, this has to do with the vast limitations of a console for RTS gaming, so I see only one possibility that will see Halo Wars be a good RTS on a console: the removal of all the things that you must have a keyboard to do. That leaves perhaps the core of what an RTS is, but takes the genre back a decade in terms of additional features and controls that have been added over the years. I see vast menu options to make up for hotkeys, slower gameplay, and the death of the finer points of micromanagement that makes the latest RTS games shine.
I hope I am wrong.
And I read a while back somone stating that the Spartans were still in training at the beginning of the war and didn't have Mjolnir yet. Read the books before saying another word, the first space battles took place before the Spartans recieved their Mjolnir armour, most of the war and land battles took place afterwords.
And also, to the people who are worried about the UNSC mostly losing, thats in Space, in a lot of the ground engagements the UNSC was able to hold their own or win, but always lost in space. But it would be nice to actually play an RTS where you can't win the mission, nobody wins every time.
