I read somewhere that Ensemble is based in Dallas...is this arrangement part of why Shishka moved?

I must apologise to Achronos for not understanding the full situation. I was not aware that merchandise was being sold as well.

This is what happens when you form an opinion on incomplete information.

I'd like to say it won't happen again, but with Bungie's secretive nature, that ain't gonna happen.

  • 09.27.2006 3:38 PM PDT

I'll be on my own side.

Strange, how that little bit of info escaped me as well. Nevertheless, I stand by what I said before. Shut down their sales, but leave the core project alone.

Never played Age of Empires? Shame.

To Jim: I know you advocate Myth extremely highly. You're a rabid fan. I've never played it, but I've only heard great things about it. However, in concerns to making great RTSes, don't you think after what, 8 years, they might have, say, lost their touch? By they, I mean Bungie. Or perhaps lost the original talent. Not to say that they wouldn't make it great. But, to me, Ensemble is a fantastic decision. I'm fairly aggravated that Halo Wars is being made in the first place, however, I'm excited at the same time. It could turn out fantastic; we'll have to wait and see. CG trailer though? Tsk tsk. What's the point in that?

Anywho, I'm excited, scared, and upset, all at once. So much good could happen, while so much wrong. Also, Jim brought up one great point (I believe it was him anyways); The Halogen and Halo Wars situation LOOKS terrible right now, but may or may not be bad in the long run. If only Bungie would tell us exactly what happened through a timeline (hint hint) *wink wink*.

Seeing Achronos and Sketch and KP and them around here more often would be great, but I'm perfectly happy with them just working on Halo 3. However, what I REALLY don't like to see, is Achronos or Shiska flip out, or even nearly flame someone. You guys can be rather harsh ;). Intelligent conversation is something often lacking on these forums, but when good threads, such as this one pop up, I love to see the "Officials" and the mods to come flocking. Conversation with fans is great; not flaming.

Edit: Well, let's hear it for Halogen + Gamespot for making MS, Bungie, Ensemble, and Halo Wars look bad. http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/strategy/halowars/news.html?s id=6158816&mode=recent
Edit 2: Finally watched the trailer. My head hurts from all the messed bits of canon in that. BRs before Halo 1? Geez. If this is any bit of indication how little control Bungie may or may not have over this project, I'm very afraid.

Aside from Toast, and Recon, even the mods that have posted in this thread all seem to be upset by these decisions made by Bungie.
I think you're loosing touch with the fact that the Moderators are just members too.

I'm not upset by these announcements, just confused. I have to admit that when I first read the announcement on the front page I pulled a Ryu Hyabusa when I said
"..........."

I didn't know what to make about the news that a Halo RTS was being made by another company and that Peter Jackson, along with the new Wingnut Interactive, was making some mysterious Halo game. Since I don't play computer games I don't know anything about Ensemble and Age of Empires. I'm even more confused by what the Wingnut Interactive project is to garner the statement, "gameplay and storytelling quite unlike anything the games industry has ever seen before."

So, I'm just going to sit and wait till I have more information and play the game before passing judgement. I'm patient like that. :P

I'm with Elmicker and wish the Bungie crew posted more here. I lurk around HBO and see the team more often in those forums than their own. We want some love too.

P.S. I'm also confused by how the front page image next to the Bungie X06 announcement has changed 3 times. Craziness. ;)

The Halo RTS is a risky move. I don't know if they can pull it off or not, I sure hope they do.

The Peter Jackson thing scares me though, I just don't have a good feeling about this. I'm scared for the Halo movie too. I fear thats going downhill. I just hope Bungie makes the right moves so Halo does not end up like Star Wars. I'm scared but I trust Bungie.

Well, as far as it goes, Myth II still rocks my socks compared to everything I've played in a similar vein (It's not an RTS, by the way, it's tactical - Unit Management, not unit manufacturing).

RTS suits the timeline they're using for it, multiple Spartans and so forth available.. But Myth would suit the "present" universe better, in that the available units are limited (and a Master chief Avatara.. Schweet....).

And again, I'm sure Ensemble are MORE than capable of making a great game, and I don't want my initial antipathy to be taken as an assumption from me that the game will be poor. I'm about 90% sure it will be a great game.

I hope your right. I need to pull out my old Myth CD and replay it. I forgot what it was like.

This is starting to sound a bit like the Halo 3 Forum, making conclusions before reading the facts.

Fact 1) None of us have played these games or new Halo projects

Fact 2) Bungie is working with both teams on both projects, quality and quantity will be ensured

So I think everyone should just wait and see.

Dance, fanboy! Dance!

It's not the point how well all this stuff is made; it's the fact that Halo is a registered trademark first and a game and story seond.

Seems to be a standard exercise in brand-whoring to me. It's hardly surprising though I suppose.

/sigh

I really wish people would stop with the "fanboi" bull...it is just as bad as elitism in my eyes. Besides the point *starts to dance*

What is a registered trademark, Halo, without a story? It seems odd to me that a name sold 14.5 million copies of itself without no other influences. It is rather obvious that the story is the necessity of any game, then the graphics, etc. The name is just a byproduct that copes with the story if you ask me.

I am actually pretty excited that there is going to be a Halo RTS. Adding in the fact Ensemble is going to make it (the Age of Empires games have been some of my favorite RTS games ever), and it gives me high hopes for the future, especially since it won't delay Halo 3. I also see why Halogen was shut down. You shouldn't be able to sell merchandise based on something you don't own. And while it seems like too much of a coincidence that it was shut down only weeks before this announcement, I know for a fact that lawyers work really slow (it gets them more money). If I was making a Halo themed mod, I would ask Bungie first. If they said no, I would have tried to make it something original. It's also annoying when people go on an anti-Microsoft tengent just because they have good business practices.

What a fascinating thread.

Anyway, I think the crucial point I believe has been raised here is one of communication between the Bungie community and... well ...Bungie.

Maybe there's something to that, although I'm not sure what exactly or how it might be improved.

They are, after all, so damn busy.

What we really need is for the bungie staff to start answering some halo fan questions and all will be right in the haloverse.

I was hoping halo 3 would be RTS so im not complaining. I haven't had fun with an RTS since starcraft and i'm hoping this will end the streak of suck that has been RTS.

However, THE NAME SUCKS. Seriously, "Halo Wars"!!

How long did it take you guys to think of that... : (

I think I can put a cap on this entire "Halo Wars" discussion...
* "Halo Wars" is a crappy name for a game...it's far too general, even more general than just plain "Halo"...the name of a game can be important in some situations, and "Halo Wars" needs a completely different name...it will affect sales...

* An RTS will not be extremely successful on a console...can you imagine playing Myth on an Xbox? No. Why? The mouse is required to keep a close watch on all your troops, and to command specific amounts of them too...you can't do this kind of thing with an Xbox Controller...

* It is not official canon to the Halo storyline...think about it...an entirely different group of people is developing the damn thing, how can another company's influences alter Bungie's universe?
Another reason it isn't canon: it takes place before Halo 1, yet one member reported seeing an elite dual-wielding energy swords...and not to mention, the elites can turn off active camo at will, whereas the Halo 1 elites cannot...don't even get me started on the prescence of the battle rifle...

The developers of the game are not making it tie in with the rest of the storyline...they're also putting it on the wrong platform, and gave it a bland title...so if you ask me, the game will be subpar at best...

Once again, people are passing judgement with no input. It is just about as bad as people in the Halo 3 forum saying they have figured out Halo 3's ending from 2 minutes of trailer.

Just give it a chance, I know I will.

Vitamin, you are completely wrong. Halo Wars might sound like a crappy name, until you start to think outside of the box that is your monitor. It pretty much says "Hey, this is the start of Halo and the war that ensues!"

Secondly, the RTS to the console idea is new...so I am waiting to see where this goes. *at least in my knowledge it is new*

Lastly, The Halo Wars has been officially approved by Bungie. Bungie is working with them to make sure that the fiction is correct and that everything fits the Halo-verse peachy dandy.

I'm not too bothered by all of this really. At first I was as angry as everyone else in the community about the shutting down of Halogen, but after an explanation was given - that IP needs to be aggressively defended or else it becomes fair game - my anger dissipated to mere annoyance at that particular way the legal world operated. C'est la vie, oui?

That Halo Wars was also being developed at that time could very well have something to do with the Cease and Desist. The question is, am I sympathetic to that? Do I accept that the IP holders have a right to be able to make money from their IP undiluted by other creations, however much they are made in tribute? The answers are; "I am" and "I do".

To a certain extent I agree with you Elmicker, and If they -blam!- this one up i'm leaving. I really look forward to Halo 3, but i honestly was hoping it was the last game in the series. Now i feel that Halo is becoming the Star Wars of the video game community, please Bungie don't turn it into that.

Bungie, please don't allow the other companies involved to -blam!- up this series. I know you are doing your best to make sure that all gets put into place so it follows certain rules for the storyline, but don't, let them -blam!- this up.
