While reading the new November issue of XBN (the Halo2 one), I noticed a very interesting quote from The Man himself. The quote isn't from the Halo2 singleplayer article, but from an article on the making of Halo1.

The article reads '...but for Seropian, it all starts with Marathon...What they [Marathon players] didn't know is that the character they were playing was the very first incarnation of Master Chief... "I don't think you ever find that out, but its the same character," Seropian says. "God, we've never said that before, but it's completely obvious. Cortana isn't in Marathon, but there are three A.I.s in there that came from the same stylistic story line." '

Now, the only question left is, is the security officer literally the same character as the Chief, or a previous incarnation of the same entity?

Note: Yes, I did check with mods before posting, and sorry if you consider this a spoiler. It was just too good of a quote to pass up!

Also, the rest of the issue (well, really just the Halo2 article) is a very good read and worth a buy. The new screenshots alone were worth my six bucks! ;)

i dont think it is literally... i havent played that much of marathon... but unless in Halo 2 we find that the Pfor (is that right?) are actually the forerunner, i dont think its literal...

Yeah personally, I dont think he meant it literally either. This almost brings up more questions than it answers (typical Bungie, eh? =) ).

The Pfhor are Marathon's equivalent of the Covenant, so if anyone or anything turns out to be the Forerunners, it'll be the Jjaro. (If you dont know, dont ask. Just go play Marathon =) )

I think it's literal. At the "end" of Marathon: Infinity, the speaker in the
final screen says this in the final moments of the universe:
"Yet I cannot help but remember one Enigma, A hybrid, Elusive
destroyer. . .but you were dead a thousand times. . .grafted to
machines your builders did not understand. . .you follow a path,
fitting into an infinite pattern."

I discussed this exact same thing in a thread thats up on the Front
Page right now, but here's a link.
We also discussed this possiblity to death in a thread a long time
ago. Ah, what a great thread that was.

Yeah, eMCee, I realize the Halo/Marathon connection topic isnt exactly a new idea, but this is the first time a Bungie [ex]employee has actually commented on this. Well, to my knowledge anyways.

By the way, interesting stuff in your 2001/Clarke connections.

I think so; You're also the same character in Pathways into darkness (you find that out in Marathon, or it is heavily hinted at..). it wouldn't surprise me a bit... (kinda expecting something like that anyways).
An A.I also mentions something to the effect you're the unsung hero who has died millions of times, only to come back to battle. So the MC can both be himself AND the Marathon Security dude, if you catch my drift..

Yeah, thats what I think as well. Chief isnt the same physical person as the SO, but he is a reincarnation of his 'soul'.

Man, I cant wait until I beat Marathon Infinity! (a few years behind, I know, but I only recently have been able to play it, thanks to AlephOne)

By the way, isnt there a reference to the river Lethe somewhere in Marathon1 or 2? Maybe it is just in the Marathon story page...(if it is, I'll probably wont see it again for a while. I dont have that much spare time on my hands ;) )

Edit: MJOLNIRdragoon; dont worry about spelling, or about not knowing what in heck we're talking about =).

I'm assuming you're a relatively new Bungie fan(sorry if I'm wrong), so just the fact you're trying to get into Marathon, or any of the oldschool Bungie games, earns much respect
