Halo had massive, sprawling levels sparkling with creativity, until the flood-levels. These were the previous levels, just rehashed. They disrupted the whole flow of the game, with repitive corridors and boring gameplay. In fact, if the later levels were cut, Halo would have been a better game. Now, I'm not saying Halo is a bad game, it is in fact one of my favorite all-time games. What Bungie did right was create beautifully crafted weapons, balanced absolutely perfectly, with awesome vehicles incorporated into the gameplay. The plot was also quite enjoyable, though you shouldn't detirmine that from the (crappy) books.
My theory is that Halo 2 won't be a revolution in first person shooters, merely Halo perfected. My guess is that the story mode will feature more of the same, with approximately the same length, though hopefully more interesting levels. And, from what we've seen, I appear to be right.
