Does anybody else think the singleplayer mode of Halo was really crappy? If that's all Bungie would have included, Halo would be just an above-average FPS. Like, all the levels are repetitive, there are only like 5 or 6 different kinds of guys, and only like 8 guns max (I don't feel like counting). The game is ultra-linear, and although the level design for the outside levels is good, the inside levels are all identical, with the same purple hallways between larger, purple rooms. My Halo score: 9.0/10.0.

You know I'm right, once you cut through the hype.

Here's to a good single player experience in Halo 2!

Maybe it's cause they only had about a year to do it. Plus I do think Halo 2 single player will be way better.

EDIT: Why would you look at the terrain inside when you are fighting off a lot of elites and grunts and jackals anyway? Oh, and don't blame bungie, blame the forerunners.

True. Although Bungie had been working on the game for more than that as an exclusive Mac game, it's true they only had that much time while under Microsoft's greedy wing.

Also, how is it "crappy" if it has a 9/10?

yeah, but in the MAC version of the game you could tame and ride dinosaurs..... i dont think that counts as development for the Xbox version.

sure SP is repetitive but everytime you do something cool it gets reborn, like killing an elite by rebounding a sniper shot off of a jackals energy sheild

its the new stuff that keeps you coming back, the challenges you set for yourself (like getting through teh PoA without loding your sheild)

it only looks like crap now because its been like three years and there has been improvments on games in those three years but three years ago halo was top of the line look at old n-64 or old playstation games

The ONLY thing that was wrong with the first Halo is the fact that the levels get repetitive, and thats only if you want to nitpick. The game brought a new definition of how FPS will be measured for the next decade (or until Halo 2 set them even higher). Still, Halo is the most innovative breakthrough game I have ever seen. You dont have to have 23 different types of bad guys and 40 different weapons to make a good game. The people at bungie did an awesome, and I mean AWESOME job with Halo. The fact you can only carry two weapons at once is a brilliant idea, it keeps people from grabbing one of everything and not have to be good with certain weapons, and keeps them from thinking about tactics. I just dont see how anyone could find something wrong with this game, it is not possible. The single player mode has probably the best storyline of any FPS I have played, and what other game do you know that has 3 novels written about it.........thought of one yet? (didnt think so)
Halo is Bar none the best game EVER!

My Halo score 11/10
AWESOME JOB BUNGIE!!!

Ok tenessee guy...

The fact that it did have 3 books written after it's release tells me that it's storyline was quite the opposite to what you said. To have a good game, you don't make a whole list of other stuff, you include it in the game. A game is like a short story... they give you as much as you need, occaisionally a bit more in the better games/stories, short stories tend not to have follow up books to add to them... it defeats the purpose.

And the storyline was not that crash hot. Typical... I'm the last hope of mankind... I'm an ultimate weapon who must take out a whole alien fleet on my lonesome... it's been done 1000's of times for years. The plot also contains absolutely no twists or interesting parts... that which is then turned into a twist by the books is often stuff you completely ignore whilst playing. Oh and I'm far from nitpicking yet ;-)

Seriously... if you want the best storyline in a FPS game, play Marathon. It probably contains more in game story than your 3 halo books combined. There are so many twists and bits of intrigue throughout the story that we've been working on them for 10 years and still haven't worked it out. For more information, check the sticky in the Underground, or post a question about Marathon... we'll be more than happy to sort out any queries there.

Tristan ;-)

Halo had massive, sprawling levels sparkling with creativity, until the flood-levels. These were the previous levels, just rehashed. They disrupted the whole flow of the game, with repitive corridors and boring gameplay. In fact, if the later levels were cut, Halo would have been a better game. Now, I'm not saying Halo is a bad game, it is in fact one of my favorite all-time games. What Bungie did right was create beautifully crafted weapons, balanced absolutely perfectly, with awesome vehicles incorporated into the gameplay. The plot was also quite enjoyable, though you shouldn't detirmine that from the (crappy) books.
My theory is that Halo 2 won't be a revolution in first person shooters, merely Halo perfected. My guess is that the story mode will feature more of the same, with approximately the same length, though hopefully more interesting levels. And, from what we've seen, I appear to be right.

No it's not. Yea it's not the best but it does'nt suck. And the reason you are all was in Puprle hall was and rooms is because you are on an alien world(or you are on a coviedent ship).

the aliens may all be the same and simple, but some are tougher than others, plus there is also a twist which makes the game very ineresting.....and yes most of the levels are the same.......because its more easier to understand!

"You have to aim above the head, but then a little lower so you actually get it."

-John Mayer

They had 12 months to remake halo from scratch

Instead of 20 low detail levels they shortened the story into 10 (actually i think its 9) detailed ones

They promised you could play as covenant or humans, but for Xbox they didnt have time

There were plans for online but there wasnt time

Singleplayer is very fun, who cares if inside looks the same, Halo is made by the forerunner, and the forerunner have their own style, they wouldnt make halo look like two completely different styles of architexture

Saying all the enemies are the same is like saying "Man fighting in world war two was so boring, everyone was a human.."

still...

Without a story behind MasterChief in camaign mode, you wouldn't understand his story to begin with. Everygame has a story behind it, without one, it would be almost boring and pointless.

its not that Halo doesnt explain it enough its just that theres just that much plot.

plus, you dont want it to be like Xenosaga where you get a game with your movie, do you?

Halo sp is sweet. I have never sat through a game and become so entirely enveloped since final fantasy 7. As for the books, every movie/game is starting to understand the idea behind fleshing out there stories. Look at the Matrix will all there tied in crap. Chronicles of Riddick etc etc etc

If you say that SP is say, 2, and MP is 10, then 2+10=12/2=6. You would have to give SP at least a 8, because 8+10=18/2=9. You said it was 9 out of 10.
