I work at Microsoft. I have nothing to do with Halo and nothing I say is "the official word".

people only get blacklisted for abusing the priviledge of being able to say it.

the word "noob" is taken way too seriously...

Anybody that takes offense to being called a "noob" needs counseling...it is just a word...it has a subjective meaning; its definition varies for everyone.

If the word "noob" isn't allowed, then why are the words "bastard," "dumbass," and "idiot" allowed? Aren't they all condescending words too? "Idiot" and "dumbass" each insult someone's intellectual capacity...while "noob" insults someone's skill at a VIDEO GAME...

Taking words seriously is fruitless in the end...if someone calls me a noob, then I don't care...it doesn't affect me...

So I think Jun's a master chef, because he takes off his helmet and your like whoa, I think he's a chef.

So to shorten this up, Jun is master chef.

Yes, it should be blammed, but when someone is new, just say newcomer.

Oh my god people, it is JUST A WORD...words are harmless...as Wuyie once said, a word only has the strength that you give it...

If you take offense to the word, then it is YOUR FAULT...

Do you honestly think the ninja's would ban the word because it hurts peoples' feelings? They couldn't be, otherwise they would ban the other words you have listed.

Then why did they ban the word? There is no good reason to get rid of that word...'tis a word that is no more disastrous than the words I listed...

To paraphrase Recon, it's the gaming equivalent of the "big N word."

It's probably the fact that it is so easy to throw around that if it were allowed half the members would use it constantly. Every thread would have at least one reply that went "ZOMG u r a nub lolz." An entire case could be, and probably has been, made concerning the very fact that seeing the word tossed around so much is simply annoying. Ignoring it won't make the problem go away in this case, but a rule and a blacklisting will definitely slow down the flow.

Then how come "fanboi" isn't banned?

And I hardly think "noob" is the equivalent of the racist term...come on, that is pushing things a little too far...

Most likely because "fanboi" isn't used nearly as much as "noob." But whenever I see a mod respond to a post with the word "fanboi" in it, the tension is pretty easy to see. The rules would be a lot stricter if the mods could blacklist based off of what they don't "like."

The two words (big N and little n) don't have to equate in terms of the insult they carry. But what kind of people use the little n word as an insult? Don't they insult people they don't know based off of an ignorant assumption? Don't they try to label the person they're insulting as a lesser being because of this assumption? Don't the people who use the big N word as an insult do the same thing? The little n word is not nearly as insulting as the big N word, but the idea is still applicable. The little n word is to video games as the big N word is to race.

The N word is taken WAY too seriously. I agree with Vitamin... idiot, bastard, dumbass, jackass, loser... they are all just as offensive, but I have never seen anyone get banned for using those words. If it's REALLY that offensive, okay fine, but why let us be able to type it out just to get banned? It's so annoying.

Here is something I do not understand.

Sometimes this word can be used in the correct context. For example, if someone is actually new to the game, then they really are that N word.

No... That's bad sportsmanship. Those are exactly the times we do NOT use it.

I support the use of the word "noob" on these forums and on Matchmaking. If you don't have enough skill then you deserve to be called a noob.

So you also support being abusive on Live? Because that's what it is; abusive. Especially when you put it like that.

Why would you type the word out in the first place unless it were used in the correct context? The rules are rather plain, so you should be aware that typing it out and using it in the incorrect context will very likely get you a blacklisting.

(10:19:49 PM) Scruss: oh and pezza, i saw what you did to that cat
(10:20:17 PM) Pezza: You were the one with the video camera breathing heavily. Of course you saw.

If you really think that its not bad, maybe you should read Recon's rant in his sig next time you see him post. Hell, or find one of his posts using the search function.

It has the word "Halo" in its title. That means an automatic campaign playthrough for me.

There are two variants of the word, as described in Ctrl-Alt-Del.

Noob: A dregrading term for someone who doesn't have a clue, and refuses to get one. (so very much tempted to give examples)

Newb[ie]: Someone who is very new to a game, genre, system, et cetera.

I imagine that people out there use them interchangealby, and therefore it would be difficult for the mods to differentiate between the two, and so both are banned.

here is the CAD comic that explains the diffrence in meanings.

warning: CAD is know for using "adult" language, and this comic is no exception.

Noob is not even a bad word, the mods are just morons and cant stand the word, so they cry about it like the other members and makes a rule.

Any word can be twisted to have any meaning I want to give it. If I use a word in a derogotory manner, it becomes a bad word. People who use the word "noob" to degrade others have made it a bad word. Do I necessarily agree with the rule? Mabye, mabye not. But your argument isn't a very good one. If anything, -blam!- it out.

If I may, I am going to add onto your post Mabian.

Why would use even use the "little n word" if it were against the rules and most likely you recieve a blacklisting, as of many other words. If you really wish to use that term fine, do it somewhere else where you know is perfectly fine to use it. It is a rule because it is, if you can't face that fact then to put it bluntly, get the hell off of this site. A rule is a rule and it is not going to change just because a few people do not find it offensive. And, if I may, I am going to post Recon's rant again but this time it the body so that no person may have an excuse of reading it. Recon's rant makes the biggest argument of all, if you have an argument against that read further and your argument will be shot down in a matter of seconds. Click here for the rant. Now, if there are any more arguments you are fighting a losing cause, the rules are rules. This thread, as far as I can see it, is finished. The "little n word" is not allowed and is against the rules, period. Nothing is going to change that, and most likely nothing ever will.

I prefer the word newbie, but that's mainly because Dr. Cox is my hero.

YES! Dr. Cox is my hero. I saw him first end of story... :P

Noob is a condescending, elitist term that should not be tolerated. You can't say that people will use it properly as the only way to use it is to demean another person. I hear the term flung about all over Xbox Live and it ruins the gaming atmosphere.

I can see how calling someone a "newbie" would be acceptable if they were actually a new player or saying "noob combo". But some people are mean spirited and use the word to make others feel lower than themselves. Things can get out of hand to a point where there not funny.
