Subject: Ranks on Bungie.net

This has been brought up before. What I'm suggesting is ranks on Bungie.net. The Bungie.net Online Team is one of the best I've ever seen, and I think they could pull-off something like this.

I belive that ranks would not only be cool, but it would promote "good posting", or rather, and inscentive to be a good member. As stated in the ideals of capitalism, being good at something will reward YOU. I'm the kind of person that strives for promotions on sites. I have become a moderator on almost every chapter that I'm a member of and a few other online forums. And I know I'm not unique. When I realize that being a good member on this site will reward me, I will be the best member that I can be. Promotions would promote great user activity.

This rank system should measure multiple dimensions. Not just user participation, but the quality of participation.

Please comment, add on, criticize, disagree, and challenge me; thats what forums are all about.

It would create elite-ism within the members, which was already averted by removing he post count and member join dates. That and Bungie is making a game, would you rather they make new unneccessary things for the site, or make a kickass game?

You can still view member join dates by clicking on their name and seeing when they registered their account.

Well, as usual, I disagree with you and all who apply this type of thread as you have stated you know it is a repeate topic, so no need to go there. But all I have to say at the moment is, why? Sure to look good but it would become a new elitism. We are trying to reduce elitism, not populate it. Yes having a unique rank like being a great participator wouldn't be too bad, but those that have that rank would feel like they are higher and better than everyone else under them. And besides, chapters are for that purpose, to discuss what you want to discuss and to, so to speak, be your own leader. Promote how you wish to promote, have more ranks than just 3 or 4. I, personally, believe bungie.net is perfect the way it is. Members are exactly that, members. As for the moderators, they are members that watch out for the rest of the community, enforcing the rules how they see fit. Other ranks are not needed.

Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

How would this be decided? Post counters? Moderators going through deciding who should get the promotions? Bungie.net teams would run through the forums looking for members to promote?

Then what about when members who use their higher rank as leverage? Some people might lose their rank, obviously, but what about the more clever people?

My gamertag is SHADOWRIDERJP.

It would cause elite-ism, flame wars, and topics that say, "ZOMG PROMOTE ME!!!111ONE" all over. No one wants that. You should post good without ranks. Respect can be earned without a shiny rank.

  • 09.29.2006 7:44 PM PDT

-Ranks encourage elitism. You'd be suprised how easily people will lose their heads over ranks.

-It would not encourage good posting, but rather the opposite. If the ranking system depended on post count, it would encourage spam. If it depended on mods handing them out, then people would clog the forums begging for ranks, and in the end even if they didn't, ranks would serve no purpose.

I'm suggesting a way to make a PROGRAM that would make promotions based on quality and quantitiy of posts.

No one does that except for me when I check the member creation date when they try to join.

From your post, I take it you didn't read all of your responses fully and completly.

That makes it too easy to get a promotion, and encourages spam. A program can't discern good from bad. So it requires more words to be "good?" Bigger spam messages. Plus that is where the problem of elitism rears its ugly head the highest.

For the record, i'd piss my self silly if there was an Armatik action figure.

"Lazy -zapp!-, what the hell are you doing playing with me? Get to work lazy ass."

We don't need it, and will create more problems, not even doing us one bit of good.

It works in smaller communities, but when you get thousands signing up everyday, it doesn't work well.

Most communities use ranks based on posts, but you're right, they're considerably smaller, like 2000 member total, which is probably the amount that Bungie.net gets everyday.

  • 09.29.2006 8:14 PM PDT

because if seeing is believing,
then believe that we have lost our eyes

I beleieve it would be foolish to have ranks on Bungie.net becasue it would just be like adding the member since feature back to it. as far as basing it off number posts, somebody could spam all the time and get more posts than what somebody who has been here for a while. The forums are all about a community coming together to discuss certain things so a newcomer posting serius topics might not be taken so seriusly if he had a newcomer rank.

Not really. Look on other forums. A lot of them have these kinds of ranks. I don't really care, but it wouldn't really do anything. It wouldn't start flame-wars, nor would eople be like "OMG PROMOTE ME!!!" or whatever. It would cause elite-ism and superiority in the forums, but it's not like theres that already.

Other forums don't have the same amount of member that Bungie.net has. (Not all at least)

Really? See, I would think junk like the Gaia Forums and the Christian Forums would have the same number, if not more, members, and look at what they have going for them.

I did say "other" which would mean all, but I did add the fact that I meant most. Oh Btw, just to clarify, you realize that Bungie.net has over 2 million members and one of those sites is religious?

P.S. I didn't fully understand your post so I'm going off of what I understood from it.

Gaia? Yes, by a huge margin.
Registered Users: 4,701,795

Christian Forums? Not even close.
Members: 164,365

Bungie.Net? Not too shabby.
Member Accounts: 1,994,706

Gaia really has that many?

Man, it's funny how Christian Forums has so few, considering the wide (basically, everything) margin of topics they cover. Plus, all the people there are extremly mature and intelligent.

Anyhoo, I think I need to find another example. Maybe CAG? I don't know, but Gaia, being solely internet based (not, like, based off a game or religion or anything), is a poor example.

4.7 million....I thought Bungie.net had a large population with 2 million. I wonder how bad the spam is over there *ponders, then gives up*

I haven't looked but I'm guessing that they're using InvisionFree forums. The link to InvisionFree. Thats a popular used forum layout, but I prefer the one Bungie.net uses. Thank you Achronos for picking this layout.

InvisionFree uses ranks based on posts (I believe it can also be modified for basis of rep, maybe thats another company though). I prefer just being "Member" as comapred to the mods and admin, it clearly defines a persons position within the site.
