"Whatever exists, whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent. These anonymous creatures may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

It just seems that the making all members equal thing kinda... counteracts why the members remain at a forum. Not just to discuss, but to make progress in the forum and become a more valuable part of the community. What better way to reward them than with a visual commendation for staying on the forums and being active?

I'd rather see the karma system actually. There have been several members who are trolls that have also been here on Bungie.net for a while.

But I keep wanting to ask the same question: Why? Why are the ranks so important? Is a reputation too easy to break? Is a reputation not enough because you can't see it? Are thanks not enough because you can't show them off to other members?

I'll be on my own side.

I'd rather see a karma system thank a generic "rank" system.

I don't get why ranks are important though. The point of a forum is to interact with other members, share ideas, discuss and debate issues and such, not move up in some imaginary hierarchy created by people with nothing better to do than brag about join dates and post counts.

There is no reason for ranks.. what are you even thinking? You're that bored?

You could be gossiping over H3 instead of talking of such poppycock.

Fergie's hot, I'm watching that video right now on vh1 haha.

That's what I want to know. I honestly don't see any reason to have ranks. We're all members here and that's the way it is, was, and should be.

And to comment on Joey's post, he shows why a Karma system wouldn't work.

I'd like to use an old adage (actually more like a cliche) and point out: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

The site is fine the way it is. If you work for Bungie, you get Gold text. If you're chosen to moderate, you get white text and the responsibilites of watching the Forum. And if you partake in the Forum's features and discussions, then you're a member (and there are other positions in between, but for simplicity's sake we'll leave well enough alone.)

No reason for ranks.

^__^

I <3 Karma. It's how I live my life. It's tuff but always worth it.

I don't believe in karma, but a system that mimics its basic concept would work well here I think. There was a lot of discussion about it a while back, and it sounded like Achronos approved of the idea, but hadn't quite got around to working on it.

First off I just do not see this obsession with the karma system. Its inefficient, or corruptible. If everyone gives karma, then you have problems with people having double accounts, just to give themselves karma. If only mods can, then you have problems with not everyone getting karma. Frankly I like the rank system the way it is.

Second I would like to address the growing concern with elitism. I am having trouble understanding why this would be such a bad thing. Elitism has some good effects. Having some players superior in rank to others would make the lower members seek to be a higher rank so that they would be superior to others. It would encourage better posting because members would want to be promoted. Also in addition to good posting it would increase activity, people would feel there is something to work towards in forums. However, I do not see the need for more ranks. I mean, we already have the ninja ranks, why do we need to increase the number of ranks. It will just flood the forums with confusing ranks that mean little or nothing, other than a title. I would like to see a post count (even if it was hidden with the member since info.) I would help group leaders to know who is active, and who is not. Over all unless if it is the addition of a post counter I believe we should leave the ranks as they are.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

Mabian... -_-

Why does everyone seem to think that the Mods will need to stay uip late scouring the forums for people to give Karma to? If they see a good post, something helpful, mabye a neat contest, they give out a point. It's that simple. They don't need to search for his other posts. If he comes across a bad one, he takes away the Karma point. That's the end of that.

One question: What about the few people who might make a good post that isn't seen? Too bad for them?

... yes? It's not like people who make good posts are constantly ignored. They had bad luck once. Chances are if they really are good posters they'll get recognized eventually.

EDIT: A Theme Master is a rank. I've given evidence, and I stand by it. Seriously, the only thing I can figure is that you're looking for something to -blam!- at me over. It's a word. Call them classes? Fine. Divisions? Fine. But Theme Masters are a seperate group then the average member. I call that being a rank.

And why give ranks and/or karma? Because I'd like some incentive to stay at Bungie.net. I want to work towards something tangible. If Achronos disagrees? Fine. I'll accept it. I won't like it, but I'll accept it and just leave Bungie.net. I just can't get over how paranoid everyone here is over something new. It worked with Theme Masters, why not try it would with other people?

I think the greatest thing is that this is the only forums that really care about join date and post count. Most of the other 20 or 30 forums I am a part of or visited dont really care about post counts, unless they are using it as a joke or just to tease new members.

What happened on these forums to make post counts and join dates matter? They really are a traditional forum and it is always nice to see progress and a small reward for participating in the community actively. Not to mention post statistics inform other members of wether or not they spam thier way to high post counts or are just active members, or even inactive ones.

Its only as dangerous as we make it, and it seems people here are only afraid of people being elitist about thier seniority.

Sure, it can instigate flame wars and other things, but the main fact is you shouldnt really care. So if you are threatened by someone with an elitist comment, just ignore it and be the better person. It shouldnt really matter, and should be used from a more informative reason than a status plaque.

Normally, I would rip you a new one for not knowing, but since you weren't around, I'll explain.

A while back, I started a thread on a karma system, and the system that Achronos seemed to like the most was a system where only moderators and admin could give karma points, and it would be invisible to all but you.

This isn't the terrible RvB karma system. Keeping the larma invisible is along the same lines as the join dates being hidden. It would prevent people saying "omfg ur a n00b look at ur karma".

Higher karma levels could potentially have benefits like exclusive forums(yes it sounds elitist, but then again, this is just an idea, so don't start menstruating). The only people who can see your karma would be the mods/admin.
