I'm not exactly a forum vet. but I'm not in the least bit bothered if somebody double posts, but for some reason, many of the communities members fly straight off the handle if they even catch word of a double poster. Seems like a pretty rediculous thing to get so upset about. Study Somalian History and Politics and Josef Mengele's medical journals are upsetting, not bouble posting.

You can double post, just dont do it often. Nor quadriple post.

Have a purpose for DPing.

I'll be on my own side.

If my post is the last one, and nobody has responded yet, I'll edit my post to add something like a quote. I think that came from a time when you'd get flamed for double posting, so I just kinda got into the habit of editing.

It depends on how it's done.

I'll give you an example:

Hello all, I would like to share my thesis on how the quantum reaction to physical matter in space is parallel to the direct proportionate surface area of anti-matter in our 3 dimensional reality......

<makes a 500 word post.>

Apologies to all for the double post, but I forgot to mention the abstract concept of alternate realities.

Now this good member made a nice, thought out post. He forgot something relevant to the discussion, and instead of making an edit that may not be noticed, he made another post, and apologized for the error. Good job. Worthy of a cookie.

Now let's take a look at the opposite end of the spectrum:

Could you please not quadruple post? There's an edit button in your browser.

OMG, WTF??? STFU N_ _B, I'LL PLAY YOU IN A 1V1

LoL, obviously it's not like this (most of the time) but this is kind of my take on the situation.

Double posting isn't bad per se, as long as it's not spam-a-licious.

I would never double post if it didn't say "edited" everytime you edit your post.

The main problem with double posting is when you bring back a long dead thread in a public forum. There are instances when double posting is ok, but not to resurrect threads.

That's not really relevant. If someone does that, it's called bumping; the main problem is that the person bumped a thread; nobody is really going to give a damn if the last two posts were by the same person.

I don't see a problem with double posting other than the situation ICEMAN put forth.

The problem that I have with double posting is that it's often a result of near-sightedness and/or rushed replying on the part of the poster. If their thoughts are still so scattered when they're posting that they didn't think of everything they wanted to post the first time around, then they should've just slowed down. It gives the impression that their post wasn't that well thought out and thereby takes away from the legitimacy of their posts, deserved or not.

If you want to address multiple points then there's no reason to use two posts, there's plenty of space in one and you can quote as many people as you want. Replying to two separate posts/ideas with two separate posts seems like a waste. That said, I realize that sometimes you'll read something, have an immediate reaction to it and you have to reply to it then and there but then after you post that you'll read the rest of the thread and see that there was something else you wanted to address. That's somewhat understandable, but in general you should try to read the entire thread before replying to it.

  • 10.02.2006 12:45 PM PDT

I'll be on my own side.

The only problem with my approach is that I'll edit a post to add a quote or something I missed, and post it, onto to return to the thread and find that someone had quoted my unedited post.

It gets a bit annoying.

A waste of what? Bungie has enough bandwidth to handle an occasional double post. I feel it's better too double post if you are quoting two seperate people, simply because it looks more organized. To me, quoting two or more people in the same post just looks like you aren't taking enough time to look through the points seperately, especially if the points in each vary greatly.

I really don't see what the problem is. Sure, some people may not like it, but many others are also just completely -blam!- about it, like seeing someone double post makes the noose a little tighter, or something. Mostly forum-cops; I've yet to see a mod get on someone's ass about double posting, unless they are doing something else as well, like flaming or just being a troll.

Its a form of bumping. Its unfair to the other posters. When you post something, the community will respond to it if they see interest. That way the boring ones get filtered out from the interesting ones. However, when you bump, your post gets pushed to the top regardless of whether of not anyone else posts. Second reason... Why you have a 10,000 character limit. I personally have only used it up completely once. And in that event you are allowed to double post the rest of your comment below. Finally there is no reason to, all it displays is a lack of any online "manners" of sorts, and that you have no regard for anyone else’s threads.

Exactly, double posting just shows you don’t know what you are posting about to its full content. Besides even if you want to add on, you can always edit your post to insert the parts you want to add. Just like I am doing now.

If you want to address multiple points then there's no reason to use two posts, there's plenty of space in one and you can quote as many people as you want. Replying to two separate posts/ideas with two separate posts seems like a waste. That's somewhat understandable, but in general you should try to read the entire thread before replying to it.

Once again, you can always edit in the rest of what you want to say, and what I am doing now looks more organized than a double post. Usually if you read through the entire thing you will see that someone else already covered your comment, you will also find that you may find new arguments later on in the thread. These new points may be more interesting than the original one. The point is, read through the entire post, think about your reaction, and post. Especially if its in a political group.

There's a difference between double posting within 30 seconds and 1 hour, the latter is just plain bumping, but the former isn't quite as bad

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Why double post when bungie gave you an edit post button?

Why double post when bungie gave you an edit post button?

Usually people do it when they want to quote someone's post after the fact, since it's easier than having to type in the "quote b posted by:" stuff

Often times when I double post it is due to someone posting while I am typing.

However, if you have a problem with it, I will work to put it all in a single post and simply edit it if I see that someone has posted before I finished.

That, however, brings a problem. It may confuse people.

My personal opinion on the matter is that if you have something worthy enough to add to said conversation, you may double post. What really annoys the crap out of me is the quadruple and sentuple posting that occurs in the Halo 3 forum especially.

It's only bad, in my opinion, to double post if your posts go as such:

"Hmm, that's a good idea."
"What if we did <this>?"
See, those could be the same post,
but I see it all the time from some people.

And things like:
"What do you think of my idea?"
"Well, any ideas?"

This is essentially "bumping", which is spam, basically. If no one replies, then there need be no bumping of posts. They obviously have their reasons.

I see it as Spam basically unless the person apolgizes for preforming the action and will not do so again. There are other alternatives to such double posting the person could have a messed up computer or something so no need to jump on him/her.DoublePosting rarely annoys anyone but it can be overlooked easily...
