I know that what I say will seem odd after I just created a highly-replied-to thread about Bungie.net Ranks, but it was that exact thread which made me open my eyes.

[Early 2003, a happy sixth grader goes onto google after beating Halo CE for the first time. This happy little sixth grader types in "Halo official game site"....]

Have we completely steered oursleves from the purpose of Bungie.net? Before Halo 2 came out, it seemed to me like we would always be talking about Halo or setting up LAAN Feests. It was all about gaming. It seems to me as though no one really cares as much as they used to about Halo and gaming. Most "good" members come here while all the flamers and spammers have at it in the Halo 3 forum.

[...the happy little sixth grader clicks on the first website on the page; "Welcome to Bungie Studios: Satisfy your Grunty thirst...]

It amazes me how many people could practically resite the HFCS FAQ because they spend all day hounding that group homepage, hoping one day that they'll get some message from Achronos saying "Hey, we need you as a moderator." Why do we care so much about the moderators, they're just members like you and me. Why dont we care enough about Halo 3 and Halo 2. Why is it all about making a Theme and getting a custom avatar. Why isnt it about Halo 3.

[...the happy little sixth grader signs onto the "forums" (whatever that was). After a couple minutes of studying these forums he realizes it's a place to talk about Halo 2 "Sweet!". He's sees a bunch of other kids talking about jetpacks
and decides that he wants to talk about jetpacks being in Halo 2...]

Mabye whats going on is good. Mabye its just natural. Its just strange to me how BUNGIE has become more of a community of other purpose rather then the official game site of Halo, Myth, Marathon, and Oni.

[...the happy sixth grader makes an account called MACmissile and is captivated by the fun of talking about Halo 2. A few days later he finds out about a "moderator" named "Shishka" who always seems to be reminding people that "the rules haven't changed. He contiues to post and be happy on this cool new place to talk about the game universe that he loves so much.. And the rest is history]

About those Jetpacks, they would be cool but I don't think they would be very 'Halo'

EDIT: Editting is the coolest, everyone is doing it

How have we stopped being Bungie.net? The purpose of the website is for fans to check up on Bungie news, talk about Bungie, talk about the games, and just be a community. We have our downsides, but that doesn't make us any less of a tight-knit community.

Take YTMND for example. Most of us are mature, but because of about 100 members, we are viewed as trollers, DDos attackers, forum raiders, ect.

From my opinion. We haven't done anything to harm the purpose of Bungie.net

It's just a little dirty right now and needs revising. Once Halo 3 comes out though, prepare for hell.

You totally stole my icon.

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

I don't know if the main objective of Bungie.net has changed, because that seems like such a subjective critique. Do you mean your perspective has changed? If that's the case, I guess it will change for everyone.

I only made an account in 04 so i could see the "Bungie.net" tag in matchmaking. I never used that account, and it was deleted. Strangely, I made a new account and started posting after I was tired of H2.

I used to come here to check out the updates before and after H2, and my stats. Then I found the forums interesting to read, but I never posted. I started off in Zanzibar, but then discovered this great community. I started to read The Septagon, and have always enjoyed it.

Is that the kind of interaction that you were looking for?

I'm going to side with Darek on this one. This site is about gathering people who like Bungie and its games to become part of a community, and provide content to said community. But what is the "purpose" of Bungie.net? Are we supposed to divulge tactics for Halo 2? Give our ideas for Halo 3? Figure out what could improve the site? What about just having fun? Tell us what the purpose is, and I will guarantee you that we haven't steered from it.

I don't think he's talking about what Bungie is doing, I think he's talking about how the members are using bungie.net.

Back in the day, there used to be a lot of good conversation involving Halo, the then upcoming Halo 2, LAN's, etc., but now, it's just flaming, trolling, and people talking about how BR's are better and MLG, blah blah blah.

Personally, I think it is most evident it the Optimatch, Flood, Halo 3 and New Mombasa forums, and I also think that it is due mostly to the immaturity of the members here at bungie.net. I don't know about you guys, but my idea of a good experience at bungie.net does not include reading a conversation between gruntfarmer, DDRmaster, and java24 about completely random, immature crap instead of relevant topics.
Also, I have noticed that instead of trying to include everyone in the community in these discussions, it is the same "cliques" of members that have conversations, and they flame anyone else that tries to contribute.

I just hope that as Halo 3 nears release, a lot of the old members will come back and we will see a rejuvenation of the site...

MAC, honestly, I chuckled a bit, hearing this from you. Knowing your past posting history and attitude since I've seen you around, I'd interpret this post as one of two ways:

1) You took either my advice, or someone elses, and realized that kissing up or blantantly saying "I want to be a moderator!", no one does. Maybe you've changed your ways, which is great. :)

2) Or, you are trying to brown-nose a bit with this thread, cleverly engineered to make you stand out, but at the same time, telling people to not intentionally try to get on the good side of Achronos or the moderators..

However, I've decided not to judge this post and all, so I will just comment on a part of the topic, particularly the "Kids wanting to be moderators".

I, personally, just help people out for the sake of helping them out. It's just how I do things. I'm the same way as I go about my "real" life as well. The sadder part is, most people take a post such as:
This should be posted in "The Classifieds"
as some sort of "Forum Policing", or being a "Forum Cop". That's the thing that I'm most concerned about. Can people not go about helping others without some sort of critisism or misinterpretation of such acts?

Also, I'd like to quickly comment on the whole: "Drifted away from the purpose of Bungie.net"..

I don't believe we've changed, as a whole, but new people have moved in. Particularly the "faux pro" group, that, in my opinion, have a serious superiority complex against other members. I'd love to see a certain rule put in place, which I believe would also fix a lot of problems going on, mostly in the New Mombassa forum... (Yeah, things like BXR, do actually seem to be a large reason for players to think they're 'better' or more superior, usually using the word 'noob', etc.) But that's just my opinion...

I agree with the idea of gaming more.

Just be careful about photosensitive siezures and/or blood cots. Same as anything else, take a break to get up stretch your muscles, give your eyes, ears and brain a rest, possibly eat something, use the facilities, then dive back in.

And that was your daily public heath saftey announcment from Johnrap.

Please, take note it may save your life one day.

The problem is that Halo 2 has been out for a while and very little information has been released about the new Halo games. Without a newly released Bungie title, threads will tend to discuss other topics.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

To each his own.

Some people come to talk about games, others about the site itself.

I believe the purpose is just as you have said, a place to gather bungie fans, where they can interact. Discussing things only related to the games themselves can only go so far, and that is why there are separate forums. For example halo 2 topics are for the new Mombassa, halo 3 topics are for the halo 3 forum ect. However, this site was not created to only discuss halo. It was created to unite the community. It was created so that b.net users can meet other b.net users, get to know them, and later play on Xbox live or whatever. That’s why there are fan groups, and the septagon is a place where the groups can get to know one another. There is nothing wrong with the community not always discussing halo topics because if they are at least posting, and are active in groups they will eventually make friends, and will eventually create teams on Xbox live. Linking their unrelated discussion back to halo.

Bungie hasn't changed, the people have. Back when this place was supposedly a "nicer" place to have discussions, people generally weren't jerks...not saying they weren't around. But as time grows and with popularity, more and more people came (including myself). Some of us learn to steer towards a less jerky path (as in my case), or others continue down the path to jerkdom (like Twitch, actually he just spammed a-lot).

So you see, it isn't the fact that this place can't be fun, but no one is taking the initiative to do so.

w00t.

The forums have become jaded from threads filled with flamers and spammers. People have lost interest with making intelligent posts because their threads will get spammed. I've almost stopped completely from going to the Halo 3 forum, save a few fanfics I'm engaged in.

You guys rock (the ones who make intelligent posts).
