I have an athlon xp +2400 at 2 gigahertz with 512 mb of ram... If i were to get an x800 pro would that boost the performance of halo or will my cpu not be able to handle the graphics card?

Heyyo,

Dude, not matter what your computer specs are (as long as they're not ancient) they should be able to handle any vidcard. Of course that vidcard being stronger than your cpu it would be dragged down by the rest of your comp specs.

And dude, the vid card makes a HUGE difference in the quality of the game detail settings, and rez sizes without too much frames/second lost. go to www.tomshardware.com and look at the vga chart benchmarks. In IV (#4 for those who don't know roman numerals...) they have your card there, but on III (#3) it has Halo benchmarks. Add aboot 10-20F/S ontop of the ATI Radeon 9800 PRO and that should be the x800 vidcard. Those VGA Chart III benchmarks are onna system quite close to yours but with an Intel 2.5GHz cpu. I'm sure on that VGA Chart III you'll find your current vidcard.

BTW, what is your current vidcard? you never mentioned...

I know that video cards are important and all, I know about video cards Mard, but I just needed to know if my athlon xp +2400 at 2 gigs is gonna be able to handle a x800 pro. I brought up this conversation because if i get enough money i might want to get a new video card cuz its a little weird( I get random artifacts here and there quite often during gameplay) but I could get a new cpu and mobo instead, like an amd 64 and that should boost up my fps. My current video card is a PowerColor ATi Radeon 9600 xt....I'm not complaining at all of the frames per second with this video card, im just a little iffy with the whole artifacts that come up randomly, o and by the way, my video card IS NOT overclocked so thats why its really weird.

Your video card might be overheating regardless of overclocking, or, more likely, it's at the end of its run. I know that AMD's heat up like crazy and if you don't have enough cooling in the case it can mess with the overall case temp. Of course your 2400 will handle an X800, just be sure to get it in the AGP flavour. I'm fairly sure there's no Athlon XP boards that support PCI Express. :/ I know there's no Athlon 64 boards that do yet, in any case.

Heyyo,

Err yeah dude, there's AMD Ahtlon 64 boards... or selse me bud wouldn't have one in his comp cause it requires a whole new socket setup (Socket A).

Geting an Ahtlon 64, IMHO, right now is a little useless unless you get Windows XP the 64-bit edition, and games and programs that are 64-bit optimized. The only game I know is Far Cry. Most games right now are 32-bit, so your frames wouldn't be boosted that much higer dude. Wait a while for 64-bit technology to become more mainstream, then you can spend a helluva lot of cash onnit. ;)

Yeah, I forgot to mention this, the only part that might not handle that vid card is your power supply unit (PSU). Make sure it has enough wattage to be able to hand it, cause that vid card's gonna sap up a lot of power. Just post it's Watt's here on these forums, that should give us a better idea. So yeah, as long as your PSU is big enough, you can handle any vid card dude. =D

So yeah, buy the x800 card, it'll work fine, just remember for newer games you need usually 1gig of ram to keep a smooth framerate. Halo's fine on 512mb of RAM, but Tribes: Vengeance? well, I've gotta order of another stick of 512mb of generic PC3200 RAM on the way, to be delivered this thursday. =)

That makes me think, are you worried aboot constant framerates? (like, frames go on new games normal at 60F/S, and then every once inna while, drop down to 4F/S?) or is it that you want a higher quality gaming experience? (Like, crank that rez, and textures, shadows, specular lighting, the works in other words)

For constant framerates, get another stick of ram like me, but for a higher quality gaming experience get a bigger vid card (and maybe a bigger PSU to support it..).

That vidcard is plenty good btw, I have a 9600 PRO myself, sure, you can't crank the rez, but you can at least see the game with nice graphics settings. ;)

BTW, I dug up that Tom's Hardware link up myself, cause I'mma nice guy. On the left under related links, you can see VGA Charts III, that one has the Halo benchmark. Here's the IV chart link starting with 3Dmark 03 tests:
