The only version of Halo I've played is on PC, and, I must admit, it was a wee bit dissapointing. It was not that the game was bad, or even mediocre, but I was expecting more from the creators of the Myth series. Though, it must be said that the majority of Halo was created in under 12 months, so I have not lost any faith.
Recently, I have had the opportunity of playing Marathon and Marathon 2 (thanks to a certain thread on this forum), and I was thoroughly impressed. I never imagined how hard the Doom series got pwn'ed...
Though the storyline in Marathon is FAR superior to that in Halo, the gameplay just can't compete. Sure, Marathon was way ahead of its time, but modern technology allows for a so much better gameplay experience than what was possible back then. There is something to be said about good AI, graphics, immersive environments, etc..
The point I am trying to make here is, we can't fairly compare the two games on anything but the quality of the story. I will say this though: if Halo 2 can be to other games like Marathon 2 was back in the mid 90's, there will be no game (including HL2) that will be able to hold a candle to it for many, many years to come. And so far, Halo 2 seems to be shaping up that way.
