Before sending my computer to repair, everything was fine. Halo went smoothly, I never had any problems with the game, it was great being a Halo player.

But now, since I've sent it to format the hard drive, I often find myself having crashes when starting a new game in servers I'm already in (never when entering a new one). I just get stuck in that Loading Map image and then nothing else works. Not Ctrl-alt-delete, not Alt+F4, not anything, so I just have to press the Reset button.

Of course that all my drivers were updated as soon as I got the computer back so that's not the problem.

So, what I would like to know is what the hell is happening here? I doubt that it's some kind of new technical problem that came up from nowhere in the few days that I was out so it must be something in my computer. I just can't figure out what exactly.

Thanks in advance.

I myself don't have a clue. Sorry.
I'm sure that somebody does though, so stick around.

One or more of your .map files may be corrupt. Re-install Halo and see if that fixes it.

Simply formatting the hard drive shouldn't have any problem or bearing on the performance of Halo unless the data was damaged while the format took place.

I'd like to know exactly what happened: The repair shop copied your Hard Drive, then formatted the original, then put everything back into the original? Some data may have been lost or corrupted in transfer, meaning that all is needed is a simple clean uninstall and clean reinstall.

Nope, that's not it. I've even tried installing it in another hard drive (I've got two) and the problem still persists.

No, they just wiped it clean (I even had to make my own copies) and then just installed the basic programs on it (Windows, Office, etc). I've installed all the rest.

I wonder if the Wolf thinks the Moon listens when he howls at it.

the game itslef is fine. if u install the game and play it without the update it will run perfectly without crashing. but for some OS builds once you get the update it ruins your game. for some reason halo pc does not like certain builds of windows. wut is ur os and exact build?

I'm not too sure about what you mean by Windows build, but maybe this will help: My OS is WIndows XP Professional (5.1, build 2600).

I doubt that's the information you asked for, but I'll try to get it if you can tell me what it is.

The bungie.net community is the halo PC community that is renowned for being unbelieveably sucky.

When people do reformats of their HDD, the most common issue is that they forget to install their chipset drivers.

Done that, and the game still crashes.

Whatever those guys did in my computer, they seem to have made damn sure they screwed up as much as they could.

The leaf-blower is an inside joke here at the Maw. Some time ago, fastmatt posted a thread saying that after cleaning out the area around his computer with a leaf blower, blowing away dust and debris, his connection became significantly faster. Obviously, we laughed and ridiculed him for how impractical and unrealistic it sounded. Ever since then, whenever people have been facing problems or issues regarding their PCs, we've recommended that they use a leaf blower. It's a joke. The leaf blower is the answer to all.

hm. when you sent in the pc, were all the drivers updated? for whatever reason a new driver could be a culprit.

Hmm... now that you mention it, it does seem like a good idea! [/kidding]

Well, they told me that they had uploaded everything except the graphical and sound card drivers, so I would assume they did. Of course that since they even forgot to install one of my hard drives... one can never take anything they say for granted (and yes, this is officially the last time I'll send my computer to those guys).

Yes, it is. Everything else is running smoothly (although I had to personaly take care of some minor problems).

Maw

This my universal fix it rutine that I use whenever something doesn't work. I will write it in the context of Halo. It is yet to fail me.

Restart your computer.
Create a restore point.
Uninstall all Halo files.
Defragment you Hard Drive(s).
Run Scandisk.
Restart.
Reinstall Halo.
note: do not install GameSpy
Run msxmlenu in your Halo file.
Download and Install the game updates found at the Microsoft website (this and this)
Restart.
Run dxdiag and run all tests.

Halo should now work.

I really hope that helps.

First off, sorry for bringing up an old topic, but I've been terribly busy with the start of a new year at college so I haven't really have time to play Halo lately.

Secondly, I can't believe that after all the things trekkie told me to try, none of them was able to change my situation (thanks for your concern though, trekkie :) ). My game still crashes from time to time at a new game startup and I'm out of ideas on what could be causing it.

So, does anyone else have any other idea on what the hell is going on with this damned thing?

FTW.

Luistano: I honestly don't know, in this case. Perhaps someone else can help you. I would also check to see that all drivers are updated for your GPU and that all the maps are installed properly. Maybe your game disc was a bit scratched and prevented the maps from loading properly?

I don't think it's a problem with map installation because I've checked the CD and I don't see a single scratch on it and I can always get in a game when I do it for the first time. It's only after the game ends and a new one starts (even if it is in the same map) that I get stuck at the loading screen.
