Old school Bungie, born and raised,

Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

This post is geared more to bungie moderators/interweb mongers...

As an avid fan of the Halo series, a disdainer of general idiocracy, and an empty soul looking for a home : (, I was wondering what there is to get involved in wtih the bungie community, seventh column, and/or anything else bungie. I enjoy participating in the forums, but usually lose faith in our future generations after several minutes, usually caused by a plethora of insults and a few ultimately...how do I put this...brackish...sure that might work here...brackish ideas/thoeries/plans. I'd just like some non-biased, intelligent suggestions on how I can put my full talents into the community. I welcome posts, PM's, and/or E-mails, though prefer the former two...

Thanks,
Prometheus25

Like I said, not really looking for answers from fellows fans, unless you seriously have a deceint suggestion...

You don't have to do anything special to be involved with the Column or Bungie, just do it. As long as it follows common sense and the rules. Many people create and sponsor contests for the community or others create artwork or video montages. There are many ways to help, and build upon the Column.

Hmmm...

Well, you could try just being a good member. That's actually rather easy, doesn't require too much work, and helps the community.

You could try creating a group, though just about every idea has been taken at least twice.

You could try to help new members, though that ties in with being a good member (or at least in my eyes it does).

You could try figuring out what the site may be lacking, and trying to find a suitable suggestion for getting the problem fixed. (Note: If you're going to do this, think very, very hard about it first.)

You might try setting up tournaments or contests for the community with prizes, though you should try to work slowly on those if you wish to try.

I can't think of anything else, really. If you're an intelligent person, the best niche you can fill is probably just being a good member, and perhaps trying to figure out solutions to problems.

I do agree with both of you...

It's a surprise the way people have acted on these forums. The past 3 years (I think that's how long, I really can't remember my first account) have taught me more about what NOT to do with new people you meet than society could ever teach me in a lifetime! Perhaps this is the correct path to have taken, although I would perfer a more active role with bungie, being 17 as well as not living anywhere near the west coast does prevent me from doing so significantly. Besides, I do believe in roles being earned, not neccessarily given (which seems to be the biggest flaw in most forum based communities).

In the mean time, sleep is in order!

Considering the relative scarcity of "good" members, I sort of feel that I do not need to do more to contribute. If you want to contribute to the community, perhaps the best way (besides being a good member) would be to try to help other new members contribute to the community.

Perhaps...

But you spark an interesting point. We do have a lack of "good" members. Most of the members that do participate in the forums are hear to complain. Although complaints do often lead to progress, too many often drown out and discourage what should really be in focus.

Perhaps Bungie.net needs to experience its own sort of renassaince and reformation. Any one else in favor for the Bungie Revelation? I am, and I'm going to start it...

From now on, all shall know of the Bungie Reformation Group...

Whoa there...hold on a second. I don't like the sound of "Revelation" and "Reformation." It sounds like some campaign to "purge" the community. And groups dedicated to fixing problems in the community by collecting members always seem pointless. Make sure you think everything through before charging into it headfirst.

You people have just sent my sides into orbit. A bunch of MLG try hards sucking the dick of some supposed pro half the thread hasn't even heard of. Classic.

How can you reform something that is always in flux?

Lol, you are right to tread carfully...Ahem...sorry, I'll quit with the fancy talk.

Indeed I hope to lead a reformation, you could call it a revelation, but the goal is not the purging of members...

What I...We...hope to attain is a greater level of respect for fellow members and staff, as well as their responsibilities, ideas, and titles.

The goal may seem pointless, then agian many said that about the American Revelution, The Frence Revelation, meny other revelations, I'm sure, as well as other things. Heck, people said it would be impossible to get to the moon.

But all these things, including my vision of a future Bungie.net, include one thing: Dedication. So I ask of you, do you not wish to see a community of cooperation and work-togetherness, or the same bitter, selfish forums we are often associated with?

The choice is, ultimately, yours...are you ready?

Slow down there Plato.

You've got a great idea. Help new members not yet part of the community to realize that this community is great, and it's not hard to contribute to it. But how do you plan on doing this? Going out to the other forums and PMing every poster you see? Making threads?

The next question one needs to ask is what the significance of a group does to the effort. What do members of the group do? Hang out? Tell the other members how many members they've helped in the past week?

"Revalutions" always turn out badly when it is nothing more than an idealistic movement. To note, the American "Revalution" didn't actually change anything, besides giving the U.S. independence, and the French Revalution went from a social movement to a bloody class war, and in the end France was not really changed all that much, except many more people had their heads removed from their bodies.

I'm not as short-sighted as you think. I am well aware that actions are louder, and much more effective than words. However, things can't be done right away. A farmer doesn't plow a field without a horse!

You do show merit, and perhaps now is not the time, but preperations must be made.

Won't you, Mabian, help out in the Revalation?

Well, one way is to simply become a well known and respected member of the community. Be around a lot and make a good impression.

Another great way is to immerse yourself in Bungie itself. I always post recreations of Halo music, pictures I've drawn, Bungie-related projects, and stuff like that. There's a great way to contribute and be known.

As I said before, I find such groups a waste of time, since the discussion that must inevitably go on in there must eventually begin to detract from the actual time that could be spent fulfilling the goal. I won't join the group, but I will be an "ally," in that I will continue to help new members when I see them.

Interesting disscussion going on here. If you want to help out with the community, why don't you help out with the Bathroom Reader?

Show a little talent here and there but let it flow naturally. Don't overflow it.

The Frozen Minority - The most infamous clan borne from the Seventh Column.

I would say be a good member first and foremost. Be a forum cop but not an arse if you like.

Or, as Trig said, you could join with the Bathroom Reader. It is still in early days but we are trying to organise ourself. The major problem has been with timezones, so extra people around the World never hurt.

  • 10.05.2006 4:17 PM PDT

Not to spoil the moment or be an A-hole, but doesn't touting this so called "Revalation" count as clan advertising?

As far as the rest of B.net is concerned, your attempts to somehow reform this place through a Column group is no more special that the Bungie Cigar Club or the Body Politic. The fact that you are actually trying to make change does not alter the fact that you are still a fan trying to make a name for himself on the forums.

Call me a pessimist, but I'm just not buying into your whole Revolution idea.

(10:20:17 PM) Pezza: You were the one with the video camera breathing heavily. Of course you saw.

There are quiet a few of us that get together so often for games of Halo 2. There are many a chapter that you could join that welcomes new members, I wouldn't advise to join any super huge group though. Look around, it shouldn't take too long.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

I will be punished by them for posting this link. =[

Why would you do this to us?
