MBT: Impossible Is Nothing
Have You Forgotten?

I’m purposing that Bungie should make a limit on alternate accounts. Why am I purposing this? Because there seems to be a few people who abuse this power, spam groups and do other damage I’m sure that I’m not aware of.
I think the max should be five accounts per IP address. Now you ask why five? There are a few good reasons why I said five as the max.
First because there maybe more then one family member in the household who likes to visit Bungie as much as you or I do. I don’t think that you would like them sharing your one and only account with you now would you?
Secondly, I have a few alternate accounts that I use just for fun, and no, I’m not a spammer.
If an account limit is at all possible I think it would help out the Bungie community a lot. This proposition will make Bungie a better and most definitely pleasant atmosphere.

Please post your comments about what you think. Thank you.

"Whatever exists, whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent. These anonymous creatures may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

Problem: IPs are easy to change. If it were that easy, Achronos would just hand out IP bans for spammers, and we'd never see them again.

The idea is good, but I don't think an IP address limit would work. If someone is using an alternate account to get around a blacklist, they get a 3-day ban from the soul. But, that is IP based, and there are too many ways to get around IP bans or limits.

  • 10.05.2006 6:53 PM PDT

The only problem with the IP-Specific stuff is that a lot of people have Dynamic IP-Adresses, which means that one day, they will only be able to create 5 accounts, but the next day, they will be able to make five more. Now, say the person who ends up with the IP address they had before wants to create an account on bungie.net? He won't be able to until his IP renews itself next (usually after 1 day), so he will probably just not try to register again, since he thinks it won't work, or send an email to bungie admin, just causing more and more work for them to do. People grow up and stop spamming, but that's never going to happen...

There's not really a solution for solving the Alternate Account problem.

That is, without isolating the would-be members. I remember an idea being pitched that you had to own a Bungie game of some sort, and with that game come a serial number that you need to input. If you're banned, you're gone until you buy a new game.

Harsh, but effective. A little too harsh for my taste.

What about the kids at school (aka College..) alot of them will fall under the same IP possibly when they hit the site. I know my last job, when I was with IT that we only had so many external IP addresses... So if 20-30 people at the place I worked posted @ bungie.net then only possibly 5 or 10 could actually do it. It randomly assigned the external IP address. You can BAN an IP for abuse but you cant limit the amount of accounts that use it. If Im correct you can only have one account per email address, so you would have to have one email address per account.

The only way to set up a limit would be to tie it do something limited a checkable: credit card. And we dont want that. In theory you aren't allowed ANY alternate accounts but the only way to check that is through methods that are easily avoided.

Do not panic, or you will fail.

Sorry you guys, but multiple accounts are not permitted on Bungie.net.

Yes, they know. If you were to actually read before you post a comment of this sort you would discover that it is a pitched idea for a future rule.

On subject, it does not seem this idea very good, as many have said. My opinion is to only have one, and only one, account on each IP address. Then one must delete their past account to create a new one. Although changing your IP address wouldn't be too hard and it isn't. The only solution that I could think of would be to totally eliminate the "people" variable. Yes, that was meant as a joke. If you ask me though, spammers, flamers, group wars, and regualr forum wars will be going on for a while, it will probably never end. We must be able to help the community and be good members so that is not the main focus of new members, to spam and flame that is.

For the record, i'd piss my self silly if there was an Armatik action figure.

"Lazy -zapp!-, what the hell are you doing playing with me? Get to work lazy ass."

Like a few above said, IP's change all the time. Hell, people get around bans by using Internet Explorer rather than Firefox. If it's that easy, then what's the point? Dial-up users' IPs change every few minutes (I believe, could even be shorter than that).

Besides, what if someone is constantly changing their email address? Or what if someone legitimately messed up a few times, and changed their name a couple times also. You would restrict them too? I think that it's a little too harsh, I mean, even though it may be rare, we have millions of users here and it's bound to happen.

I work at Microsoft. I have nothing to do with Halo and nothing I say is "the official word".

It was my understanding it's already against the rules to have multiple accounts, it's just very hard to catch it.

  • 10.06.2006 4:17 PM PDT

I understand the need to limit alternate accounts to stop problem users, but what if some family had like 10 kids and they all played Halo and wanted to be members of Bnet but had only one computer. I guess they would just have to share. They would probably be used to it.

  • 10.06.2006 4:21 PM PDT

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

It's not against the rules to have another account. It's a permabannable offense to create another account to evade a blacklist. However, having multiple accounts subjects you to scrutiny which you probably do not want to have.

Unfortunately, the requiring a game to register idea might not work, but perhaps eventually we can find some to make accounts more permament. If we permaban someone, I do not want him coming back. I think if everyone felt more responsibility about his account then the forums would be better. And we wouldn't have to deal with dedicated spammers, and we have several currently, although you guys don't see them.

I think we should just stick to one account. I have two accounts, but the other I use to view my stats, friends, and other XBL stuff.
