Subject: Uh-oh, I think my PC has a virus!

Add me to your friends list if you haven't already. It's a lot more fun to play with people from The Maw and people I know than random noobs.

I recently noticed all of a sudden, my PC has been taking much longer when I log in (Windows XP). This happened quites suddenly and is very noticeable. I am thinking a virus is responsible.

Now I have not had to deal with viruses before and need help. What should I do?

Well, Disk Cleanup your computer. And if it is matinence you need to mantain, then Disk Defragment your computer.

Hmm, try PandaScan, and trendmicro. And you want to get Hijackthis, its a really powerfull tool, that can find viruses and spyware very quick.

I just got over something like this.

I ran my computer all night long and it was slow at turning on afterwards.

1-Delete any large file you may have gotten

2-Uninstall any new program

3-Run a registry cleaner (search for Abexo Free)

4-Wait about a day, after it runs normally for a while t will be find.

Some can, but Im guessing you have more processes because of all the free programs sucking memory. Its not nessassarly a virius cauz you are logging in slow. Press Ctrl+alt+del when you log on and tell me how many processes you have open.

Also, disable the stupid welcome screen (Users control panel). It shaves at least 5 seconds off your start up time.

Just do what I said, trust me, it works.

If worse comes to worse, just system restore to before you had problems...

Avast, A squared, Spybot, and Windows Defender.

Then if you still have stuff go to spywareguide.com and search the name of the problem you have and it'll give a solution.

Okay, listen up: If you think your computer is infected with a virus, first, don't panic. Most, if not all viruses are easy to deal with.

Second: Get an antivirus scanner. I suggest Avast! or AVG Free, I personally use AVG free, but it's a matter of choice. Install it, run it, and let it do the dirty work. After it's installed, either one will receive free and constant updates. I don't know exactly how Avast!'s update system works, but I know that AVG provides quick, simple updates with minimal hassle. Both of them are free and receive automatic updates.

Third: Get an anti-spyware and anti-malware scanner. I suggest either Spybot S&D or Ad-Aware SE. One interesting thing to note is that occasionally, you'll run across adware that purposely interferes with the normal operation of (or even freezes) either Ad-Aware or Spybot in an attempt of self-preservation. Fortunately, if it interferres with one, it usually doesn't interfere with the other, meaning that at least one of the two will remove a given malware from your computer. Download, update, and install that.

If all that doesn't work, it might simply be a random program that boots on startup. Go into Start>Run, type "msconfig" and hit enter. Once there, go to the Startup tab and uncheck anything that doesn't belong or that you don't want to boot. I'm not saying you disable to GPU drivers, but things like QuickTime or even AIM take time to load, which might contribute to your lag.

Once the virus/malware has been removed, install a firewall. A free firewall, I recommend tZone Alarm's firewall (free version), also one that I personall use on my own computer.

Hope this helps.

Only one? I would search for more. Malware doesn't usually come alone, and especially if you've never scanned before, unless you're really careful, you should probably have more than one. Otherwise you're lucky. I just scanned my cousin's, found 131000 cases of viruses/trojans/adware/keyloggers, etc. Running any application, including antivirus screwed it up, as 10 seconds within boot, ~50 ads would come up, and task manager wouldn't even work until like 5 minutes. We used safe mode to schedule an avast boot check which seemed to work.

It's kinda redundant to have Spybot AND Ad-Aware.

Actually Spybot and Ad-aware do find diffrent things. Some things spybot does not find ad-aware finds, and what ad-aware misses spybot finds.

NOD32 -> All

Also,get hitmanpro 2.
It uses all the free scanners, some of them are trials, but hmp2 is still the best out there, but only a few people know it.

http://www.hitmanpro.nl

Its also in english.

I don't know that much, but I think Trojans are designed for infiltration and retreival of infromation, not causing problems like lag etc. This is one stupid thing that caught me a while ago. When I booted up my computer it'd stay at a dos screen for a good 5 minutes. I ran every anti malware program I could find. Turned out it was because I had my ipod plugged into the USB port. So try unplugging any unnecassary external devices next time you log in, just on the off chance it helps.

There are also trojens that open up back doors that enable other hackers to infiltrate your system and install their nasty things on your computer.
