I don't know that much, but I think Trojans are designed for infiltration and retreival of infromation, not causing problems like lag etc.
Trojan horse viruses generally infect PCs when some retard downloads "Family Guy Season 1.exe" or something similar. When they click on the exectuable, the trojan horse hides itself in the processes list, and it may delete files, move files, send info about your PC to someone, or they may just erase your hard drive.
A classic example of a trojan would be something like "Waterfall Screensaver.exe". It's disguised as a screensaver, but as you probably guessed it was a trojan. Another example would be a keylogger. You might download something that looks legit, but as soon as you install it it puts a keylogger on your PC which send information about every key you type to someone. (In this way, someone could get credit card information, log-ons for websites, ect.)
AVG works fine for me. It usually scans executables before they're opened, sometimes catching things while they're being downloaded.
Oh, and if you're concerned about that kind of program that sends information, like I said, install ZoneAlarm Firewall. It asks you if any sort of program wants to access the internet, meaning that if a keylogger collects info, it can't send it back to the database, rendering it mostly useless.
