The most effective way to find the dangerous viruses is to open up Windows Task Manager, go to processes and GOOGLE every process.

You'll find most on stuff like Mcafee and Norton databases (including the ones that are necessary, not harmful and dangerous) and they will tell you how to remove the viruses. Warning: you usually have to edit the registry to fix it.

You can install viruscanners as well, but that's my primary advice

I don't know that much, but I think Trojans are designed for infiltration and retreival of infromation, not causing problems like lag etc.

Trojan horse viruses generally infect PCs when some retard downloads "Family Guy Season 1.exe" or something similar. When they click on the exectuable, the trojan horse hides itself in the processes list, and it may delete files, move files, send info about your PC to someone, or they may just erase your hard drive.

A classic example of a trojan would be something like "Waterfall Screensaver.exe". It's disguised as a screensaver, but as you probably guessed it was a trojan. Another example would be a keylogger. You might download something that looks legit, but as soon as you install it it puts a keylogger on your PC which send information about every key you type to someone. (In this way, someone could get credit card information, log-ons for websites, ect.)

AVG works fine for me. It usually scans executables before they're opened, sometimes catching things while they're being downloaded.

Oh, and if you're concerned about that kind of program that sends information, like I said, install ZoneAlarm Firewall. It asks you if any sort of program wants to access the internet, meaning that if a keylogger collects info, it can't send it back to the database, rendering it mostly useless.

There are many ways and many programs, each of which, that are very good, that can help you with your virus/malware problems. AVG has served me well, go try it anyway despite what these dudes have said about it.

Add me to your friends list if you haven't already. It's a lot more fun to play with people from The Maw and people I know than random noobs.

Well, I got rid of the trojan horse, but how do you keep the things like Windows Messenger and stuff from starting too. It still takes longer than normal. I think i'm just going to uninstall QuickTime seeing as I never use it.

Am I correct in saying you can also just wipe the hard drive clean and install the OS again? I am wondering because we have an older computer thats completely virus ridden and almost useless because of that.

Ok thanks I do that now.

-EDIT-
To make sure this doesn't happen again, what sites are OK to DL files from. Any ones that I should know never to go to.

Like I said, Start Menu>Run, type "msconfig" and go to Setup, that should bring up the list of proggies that start on startup. Just uncheck those that don't belong (Quicktime, etc).

And yeah, you can wipe the HD clean and reinstall the OS, but you'll lose any and all data you had on the computer.

You'll have to use your own discretion when downloading files. There is no safe website to download from. Even sites like Cnet's Download.com carries one or two unsafe programs, mostly because they don't know themselves that it happens to be malware. Your best course of action is just to be safe. This means lay off the pr0n (seriously. A lot of pr0n contains tricky stuff), stay away from file-sharing sites, don't download things from shady-looking websites and most importantly, keep an updated antivirus handy Most antiviruses, Norton, Avast! and AVG included, scan incoming files, and I've gotta admit that it's saved my ass once or twice.

A third thing about malware: It can come prepackaged with other less harmful things. For example: AIM version 5.0 used to come with the Viewpoint Media Player, which most antiviruses and anti-malware programs label "malware," stuff that can harm your computer. Read the EULA carefully and be certain you know exactly what a program's gonna do and why. If you don't know what it does, don't install it.

I'll post a link to an article about safe computing when I find it.

EDIT: It's a bit long, but chock full of damned good information. Enjoy.

That link should be stickied.
-EDIT- After reading through that page, I noticed something: I don't use IE as my web browser. I use FireFox, made by mozilla. According to ARS Technica, this should prevent me from getting most of that stuff. YAY FIREFOX!

Hate to break in on the Firefox loving, but thats a common misconseption today. Firefox has just as many security holes as IE, its just nobody exploited them because Firefox wasnt a popular browser. Today, however, it is. Hackers are now starting to exploit Firefox's security holes, just like IE's.

Im not saying I dont like Firefox (I dont use it), Im just saying that thats not the true case today.

@ DivX: Well, I haven't gotten any pop-ups in FF yet. My IE is riddled with the buggers.

I feel your pain mate....I currently am the victim of spyware that likes to popup everytime I enter the interenet. It's not hard to end the program and get it out of the way but its annoying as HELL.

I swear if I ever find the person who made spyware I'm going to stab them in the face with a sautering iron. Then I will beat their corpse viciously with the thing they used to make the spyware. GRRRRRRRZORZ!!!

Headline in the news:
A man only known as Demigod killed the first known creator and distributor or spyware. It is alleged that Demigod took a hot sodering iron and stabbed the guy right in the forhead. He then took a 14.4 kb modem and maliciously and brutaly dismembered the man's body. No more information is known other than Demigod was sitting right next to the body with a very large and suspicious grin.
