Carnage Kaiser again, asking for your thoughts on another wide-spread issue among the Bungie.net forums:

PM inviting

I've never gotten PM invites. I figured I was never important enough. But after being the creator of a 50+ thread, I was flooded with invites. I'm not going to complain about it, I mean, go ahead, send 'em to me, I really don't care, If I'm interested, I'll join, if I'm not, I'm not. But I can understand why people are easily annoyed by them. But are they really that bad to the community. All I got to say is this; maybe they are good, I'll let you decide. After browsing through The Classifieds, I'm thinking to myself, it's very in-effective. I can understand why admins resort to such methods. But I'm not going to get too deep into this issue, I just want to here your thoughts and ideas about PM inviting and related. Ideas to alternative methods (Countering PM inviting) are welcomed.

People need to chill out about group pm invites. For one, how many other ways do people have to advertise their groups? Other than the Classifieds, pming is about the only way. Second, its not even a big deal.. the people that rant about it obviously have nothing better to do. Finally, you know you get excited when you see that little message icon, so don't act like you don't want a ton of messages.. what? were you expecting some important message? nope, don't get your hopes up ;O

Well, I always respond politely, no "STFU GO AWAY" or "I DONT ACCEPT GROUP INVITES". I usually look for several things. Does the group offer something not offered already? Does the group appeal to me? Is the person to PM'd me intelligent? Did you just copy and paste a pre-rendered message and send a massive wave of these to random people? Why chose me?

If they meet most of that, I'll join. If the group turns out to be stupid/inactive/unappealing, I'll leave it.

I'm usually open to group invites, and I get quite a few.

Once, though, this guy invited me to a group I was already a member of. Bet he felt stupid.

If people care enough about the chapter to send them out, good for them. I personally like to screw around with the guys who send me them (nothing bad, just things to entertain me), but I hate people who act like they're too good for them. That's just down right sad.

I agree, I love to see the little envelope icon, and I don't mind the invites. I have a feeling people who complain just want people to think they are too busy to deal with them.

I like my close knit groups that are made by my close friends on this site *cough*Tartan II's and Halo 3 Intel HQ*cough*cough* better than the spam invites.

And you can tell a spam invite from an actual invite. But when people see someone post a lot, I guess they think that means they'll revolutionize their group. But that's not the case. I used to get group invites galore (I still get quite a few nowadays), and most of them are groups that I find interesting, but it's not something that I'm willing to leave one of my groups I'm in for.

I wish people would understand: Spam Invites are annoying. At least make them a little personal by adding a name, and not just a copy/paste.

Ah, look at the lonely people...

I just got two invites from two different people to the same group, they were carbon copies. :P

"Whatever exists, whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent. These anonymous creatures may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

I'm always willing to give a group a look-over if an invite is sent (and the purpose of the group isn't already mentioned). There are only three things I truly despise about group PM invites:

1) Carbon copies. There is no need to go further.

2) "I've noticed you on the forums..." Translation 1: I saw one of your posts and clicked the "Message User" button. Translation 2: I saw your name a few times on the forum I was looking over, so I figured that since you're active at one place, you'll be active in my group.

3) People sending me invites to groups based on discussing things I have shown no sign of having a wish to discuss. If I don't go to the Halo 3 Forum, why would one assume I want to talk about Halo 3? If I don't visit the Library, why would one assume I care about Halo PC? It almost makes me want to send a reply saying "What on this forum gave you the impression I was interested in talking about X."

Despite those facts, I am usually still willing to go over a group's homepage if the purpose of the group is a bit ambiguous.

I don't really care, simply because I dont get much of them. Even though they send me the invite 100% of the time I won't join, simply because the group doesn't interest me. If i happen to find a group interesting, sure Ill join.

I honestly loathe PM invites. I usually get it from groups that I really dont want to be apart of.

I don't find it too hard to delete unwanted PMs. If you get them multiple times from a user, it's even easier to block them than PM them.

I don't mind invites. Usually I either confuse the person with a cryptic response or just disregard it.

What I DO mind is people saying that because a certain mod has joined, it's a good group. Without that mod's permission. GRRR.

You are an intelligent member, you are just simply not the kind that people look for.

I will tell you what "They," look for. Most recruiters look for new, gullible members, that are just drooling at the thought of getting into an exclusive "club." I don't do that, however. I won't let my members do that.

It cannot be done away with. There is simply no other effective way to gain members. It is hard enough as it is to run a group, I know, I have run four at once (don't ask). The last thing I want to worry about is access to new worthy members. I had decided to retire, as my deeds were done and those groups are now successful and can run on their own.

As I said, there is simply no other realistic option. Leave it.

Don't worry I already know. Im not a very sociable person at all. Even in real life. Which is sad cause when i was little i was super social....

I agree, the way the system works, Admins really have no other choice but to send PMs to people to join their groups

I like to join their groups and create a few threads about how I hate PM invites. If more people did that I think that invites would go away. What's the worst they can do? Kick you out of a group you didn't want to join?

What gets me is the amount of group invites that advertise their group as a 'great place to talk about Halo 3'. Well we are all part of a group that is a great place to discuss Halo 3.

I hate the fact that every group invite is the same.

"We're a relaxed group, come on in to chat about anything! We talk about Halo 2 and 3 and anything else as well so come on and join up!"

-Everyone- talks about everything. The only group invites that are interesting are the ones that offer something different... "We're all about Team Skirmish tactics. If you like Team Skirmish, join up!" might interest me, if I like Team Skirmish I'd probably join; if not, I wouldn't. But those generic "talk about everything Halo and anything else" invites... All I can see them getting is a few members who belong to other such groups and therefore probably wouldn't contribute.
