I have loved this site for the better part of two to three years at this point. So please keep that in mind as you read the following lament.

What will Bungie have to do to get back to their post-Halo 2 high? Do you all remember those days? Everyone was estatic about Halo and the stats for the Bungie.net traffic trends are indicative of just that.

Then things began to slide, as they always do. Nothing can last forever, right? Fans got bored of Halo 2, modders reigned, and nothing was happy. Since, there has been the occasional spike (the map-pack, the movie announcement, even Halo 3 was a bit of a flop hit-wise).

That brings me back to my original question. What must Bungie do to get the forums moving again, certainly, to get the community moving again? Will Halo 3 be as big has Halo 2? As hard as it may be to believe, it seems unlikely to me. To use the old adage, the first's a classic. I think it will be difficult for Bungie to gain the inertia or suspense that existed in the years after Halo 1 (will they or won't they make a sequel, etc).

Frankly, I feel that's a shame. I've been noticing that things are slowing down signifcantly. The forums crawl instead of leap. The web content is old and growing tired. Groups that used to be titans struggle to maintain enough activity to justify staying open. I can't really express in words how strange that is or makes me feel, but I fear our beloved series may be slowly fading to a premature death.

The Frozen Minority - The most infamous clan borne from the Seventh Column.

I remember it being slower that it is now and it sped up. The reason for the lack of activity and generally communal activities is because we dont have anything to discuss.

Halo CE? Nah done to death, we know it all already.

Halo 2? Oh yeh nothing beats a discussion full of "stfu noob I cud pwn u 1v1"

Halo 3? We don't know anything about it in the least. Nothing to talk about with Halo 3.

We have nothing to discuss, we can't even speculate for Halo 3 or the Halo movie seeing as the extent of our knowledge of the two is that they are existing at some level.

Bungie listens to its fans! ^.^ | Ninja .II./ You
RCG: In ur base, steelin' ur flagz. | Watch the demo, then join the carnage!

Once the Bungie Update gives way to the Halo WWU, you'll definitely get your fill of fast flowing forums, I think.

But it's at times like these that you can find that worthwile discussion that is kept alive by the fact that it isn't being swamped by "omglolgruntsinH3!" threads, that is slow-developing but really interesting.

The long-standing members are still here, and it's with them that you can create a really good thread without being told to GTFO etc. etc...

The pace'll pick up with the Halo 3 info.; for now, try and see the good side of what we have at the moment. Throw yourself into Community discussions, start some of your own... Do it while the whole place isn't swamped by traffic about the newest Halo hit!

A lot of the Forums are dying, I've noticed. Well maybe that's too harsh a word, but The Septagon once took 4 hours of no one posting. And that was recently (within the past week.)

Now I know that it's school time, and the majority of this site's vistors are too busy with other things. Because during summer, this site was quite the hotspot, and it was sometimes too fast to keep up! But now we're slowing down, and kind of chilling. Posting about the same stuff over and over, but no one cares because at least it's something to talk about.

Is Bungie.net in a rut? Now that I think about it, yes. The main forums I visit are The Flood, Optimatch, New Mombasa, The Septagon, and now Halo 3 Forum again. I can tell you what these Forums are composed of, on a day by day basis:

The Flood:
"I have a problem with this girl that I want to ask out."
"What's your favorite _______?"

Optimatch:
"BRING BACK CLANMATCH AND RUMBLE HARDCORE AND RANK SWAT!!!!!!!!!!"

New Mombasa:
"Is Button glitching cheating?"

Halo 3 Forum:
"Add *insert random idea* to Halo 3!!"

The Septagon: As far as repeat threads go, it's not bad in here. There's just a general lack of activity when there's nothing to discuss.

This is just from one member's perspective. But I feel as though we're simply losing stuff to talk about. How do we fix that? Well frankly, we don't. Everything that we haven't discussed yet is probably not allowed to be discussed anyway, and I have a feeling this isn't going to change until Halo 3 arrives along with the New Hawtness v 2.

But that day seems farther and farther away as one thinks about it. Ah well. I guess all I can say is: Let's just continue hangin' with Bungie.net, and not let this place slow down. I'm sure it'll be more active in the near future.

I prefer slower forums. I'm not looking forward to coming to the forums the day after Halo 3 is released. I think I'll take that whole month off...

There is a line you must draw between your dream world and reality

I'd rather have it be a little slower. What's more annoying then trying to respond to someone, only to see that during your time typing your response a full page of other people posted before you?

There's less filler, more substance, I think.

Yaa I like the atmosphere right now, it's not overly active but not entirely dead either. Even if we don't have much to discuss we get by on other things to talk about, like the ps3, and wii, and other tpics in the flood. ^__^

Whenever I feel I might have something new(to me) to discuss, somebody always comes along to remind me that it has been said already. To death.

I like Halo.

Well, I have two point of views on this subject....

First, I consider the community as a mixture of kinetic and potential energy. Right now, as stated before, there is little to discuss. Because of this, the equilibrium of of potential and kinetic energy in the community has shifted overwhelmingly to the potential energy side. But, when any bit of information about the actual contents of the games being developed surfaces, and especially with the release of Halo 3, all that piled up potential energy is going to explode and become completely unmanageable, similar to the release of Halo 2.

I was around to keep up with the development of Halo 2 for about 2 years before it came out. And the community aura is quite the same as it was during this point before the release of H2.

My other view of this subject: I constantly find myself ditching these forums and this website for the more fun activity of PLAYING Halo 2 online. With Halo:CE, it was almost more fun to talk about it on here, because it was rare that I had local friends that I could have a LAN party with at any time that I saw fit. What I mean by this, is I think that the online experience of this game is so good and so accessable at any given time, that this site is often neglected by the community, because they'd rather be playing the game. I know it happens to me alot.

The community problem I'm worried about is the cluster-blam!- that this site will have to deal with when the game ships.

I hope you're joking. We're going to need the whole moderator team if we're going to survive it. I think it's going to look a lot like when Halo 2 first came out. I remember shortly before it was released excitement filled the forums (I was on my first account back then - it's deleted now), but right after it launched it all went to crap. Dissapointed gamers turned to flamers and griefers, while overzealous fanbois defended Halo 2 more than they'd defend their own mothers. It was crazy. I hope it's not like that but chances are, it will be.

Stay, or when I finally level up my priest, you'll get no heals from me.

The members who still care are here...whether it be in groups or just reading the forums. About 55 - 75% of the time I just read posts, I don't really bother to reply. Sometimes that is best seeing as that people are breaking the rules or I just don't feel like posting. But like I said there will always be fans here...not really hardcore people, but just people who generally love Bungie.

  • 10.10.2006 12:40 PM PDT

I'll be on my own side.

There's going to be spikes with each new Halo release, but not as bad as Halo 2, I think. Halo was a huge hit, and the fact that a sequel was coming was a dream come true. The novelty of another sequel has worn off a bit.

Halo Wars might be a different story. Of course, there's always the Ensemble forums, but do you think the average idiot will go there? As far as they know, Halo = Bungie.

I've been around these parts for almost eight years now...wow! Maybe I should be concerned about that...

There was a spike in May when Halo 3 was announced, and it will settle down until another huge announcment stirs things up...right now, enjoy things the way they are. More quality over quantity. This is all a familiar cycle of activity, and activity is just where it should be.

I don't even know why I should bother saying it since this will be the 1,000th time it's been said, but there'll be a spike when Halo 3 comes out.

Hell, I came back myself when Halo 3 was announced. It was fun.

I'm not sure how familiar you guys are with stock market trends. Anyways, there are things called the "floor" and the "ceiling." The floor is simply the lowest of hte previous values at which point the stock price is "bouncing" off of. This is a very visual concept and is demonstrated nicely by the traffic level on Bungie.net since mid-June. On the contrary, the ceiling is the upper-bound of the values off which the stock price will come close to and bounce away from. Notice how the trend is going sideways? That indicates it is bouncing in-between those ranges. In the event the floor is broken, it becomes the new ceiling and visa versa.

Now you might ask how one breaks the ceiling. In the case of the stock market and obviously in the case of visitors coming to a site, it is volume. It takes a lot of pressure to break the ceiling: something really dramatic must happen to bring attention to the company (or website). Notice here we can see the Halo 3 announcement broke the ceiling and kept climbing for a while before it peaked and fell again.

With that covered, let us go back to the two year chart and the lifetime chart. Notice before Halo 2, traffic was generally moving horizontally at comparable levels to today. Close to a year after Halo 2, things are back down to the same level. Observe that the Halo 3 announcement wasn't significant enough to drive it back up to Halo 2 levels: in fact, it was HALF the peak of Halo 2.

Now, with that covered I will re-ask the question. What must Bungie do to get back it's post-Halo 2 high?

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

Um, I'm betting releasing Halo 3 would spike things. Considering that the announcement of Halo 3 was one the worst kept secrets ever (sigh), it wasn't exactly a big deal, especially since a lot of people got news on it via other places.

Halo 2's announcement didn't spike traffic here for more than a few days. What did spike it a collossal amount was the release of Halo 2, and the reason it did so was because the game itself advertised that this was the official place for Halo 2 community - not only forums, but extra stats, including the neato gameviewer.

Announcements spike things for only a few days, but then everybody knows about them, and there is little more do say. But releasing the game is on a completely different level than a simple announcement. So, I wouldn't worry yourself about us getting back to our Halo 2 high. If the game we release is great, so will the traffic numbers. Besides, I'd rather have quality over quantity here, and because we aren't ad-supported, that's completely okay.

My only concern is how the community is going to respond to this sudden surge of members. No one better say "2007 guys are ruining the Forums!!!" I'll be really dissappointed if I see that.

When they arrive, lets break out the punch and put away the bananas (for once.) LoL, but in all seriousness, I actually think it'll be ok. This place is pretty accepting once you get your posting right. But inevitably, there will be some animosity to the new crowd. It all depends on how we act/react to that. And that's what's going to define Bungie.net in this next generation.

Can't wait. It should be fun.

and because we aren't ad-supported, that's completely okay.

I know some people with websites. For a little moola, lets just say that if you scratch our backs, we'll scratch yours.........

j/k LoL
