Of course. As with all rules (both here and in the real world) they have to be enforced to be effective.

Regardless of whether other languages should be allowed, this was bound to be locked anyway.

The poster may have posed an interesting initial topic but if you scroll down, his next reply is full of swears and political references. If this was translated and posted, he would have almost certainly been blacklisted.

This only reinforces the argument for keeping it english.

I raised that with Recon in real-time, and it was one of the things that brought me to write this. The guy was flamed for posting in another language, and I would assume he "snapped".

You are probably right.

It is unfortunate though that he had to resort to cursing/politicizing as his defense.

Very true, but I know that English speaking people can react in a very similar way, too. You see it here on a regular basis...

That's true also, but if it's in english it's easier to be dealt with. I'll type up a more thought out post later. I agree and disagree with you on multiple points, but I have a chem lecture to go to (it starts in 5 minutes) so I'm going to edit my post when I get back.

Edit:
It's easy to use online translators but they only go so far. The english language isn't alone when it has idioms or a play on words. For example: a lot of Texans say "fixin' to" when they are about to do something. I rarely say that; actually, I can't remember an instance when I have said that. In any case, I'm sure other languages use different expressions, too. Aside from that, not many bungie.net members have the courtesy to use online translators. They shouldn't feel obligated to, either.

Moderators would have to use translators and their best judgement when reviewing threads that are posted in a foreign languages. This is just one more thing that piles onto all the other things they take care of on the forums. Their job is thankless enough as it is; why add more work to it? I'm not saying that we shouldn't let foreigner's post here, but (as it's been stated before) they should try using an online translator and posting their post in (very rough) english. Also it's been said: they should try to indicate that english isn't their foreign language. Sure, there would be the occassional jackass who decides to be a prick and insult them, but many members disregard those kind of people anyway.

It basically boils down to the fact that it's just one more thing that the boys in white have to deal with.

Please do. Of course, as a discussion/debate it's only encouraged...

Valid points; and I agree that where possible, people should try to post in clear English, as it benefits the majority of the community.

However, I still don't think a thread should be locked solely because it's in another language, though.

It might be becauese they'd want to nip a potential problem in the bud.

I've been around these parts for almost eight years now...wow! Maybe I should be concerned about that...

People will not understand him, for the most part, because Bungie is mainly comprised of American, Canadian, European, and Australlian members who speak English as their first language. I don't have a problem with people of an nationality as long as they post good threads, rahter I have a problem with the immature majority of the community. Posts in a foreign language will ALWAYS attract racial flames and bigitory statments, which are just going to earn multiple bannings...and if it were deemed "OK" to post in another language, then everyone would go crazy and start posting in Spanish or French because they think they're original. Which they wouldn't be. But that's just my view. Maybe the community is more competent than I guesstimate.

Dude... did you know that your reading my sig?

I think this forum should have its own translators. So you can go to your profile setting and set the sites auto translator so no matter what language you post in it will be translated into the language preferred by many users. But i dont think there will be need of use for this in the future.

Ages back Reiginko and I had a relevant exchange regarding this subject. Somebody had posted a thread in what my memory suggests was The Flood, which was written entirely in the Phoenician [i.e. Arabic/Farsi/etc...] alphabet. My suspicion - based on very limited knowledge in that area - was that it was entirely gibberish cobbled together from the Windows Character Map. The point is that Reiginko asked me to look into the text to confirm it was gibberish rather than a genuine Arabic/Farsi/etc... post before he removed the thread and blacklisted the poster.

Not to say that's how it should be done now or in the future.

Aww, that sounds like fun! I bet that lifted the spirits slightly at least...

Foreign language or not, wasn't he advertising his group?

My German is rough, but I could read it and saw that it was an advertisement.
