I know this has been discussed before, but I wanted to re-discuss this matter about a simple idea, presented by one of our fellow mods, Anton P Nym.

Many people, when they see their thread locked, they often wonder, "Why?" Recently, one of my, stupider threads was locked, and I wondered, why? I saw no harm done. I looked for a reason, but to no avail, as the mod who locked it remained hidden. I didn't want to make a thread, as I didn't want to dig a deeper hole. But our Anton P Nym has his own unique way when he locks a thread:

Moderator Notice: Locked because of spam.
--Steve

I am posted this because Anton here has a valid system, and I'm wondering why the other mods aren't following in his footsteps. What are your thoughts? Should more mods take on this system. Do you think its good for the community, or bad?

Note to Steve: I hope you don't mind.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

I hope the mods take some time out to let the rule breaker know that they were the one who locked it!

Because I hate seeing "why was my thread locked?" threads all the time.

In theory if they know who did it, then they can send a PM.

In theory that is.

Nope, I don't mind. However, I don't use it for every locked thread. If things are frantic, I'll only do that for posts covered by one of my "canned" messages. And if the reason for locking is obvious or already posted in the thread, I often don't leave a message either.

Sometimes that method is too stealthy for my liking. The person can easily go over it if they're dumb.

So I usually reply to the thread.

Hey, I already stole that technic from Anton fair and square.

If a member has already correctly pointed the thread creator in the right direction I think it's sufficient to just lock it although like TGP (in all of his bushy haired glory) said, sometimes you need to reply to a post to get the point across. You just play it by hand.

I almost always reply to the thread I am locking and say "Don't spam" or "Report cheaters to blah blah".

Though I think I will make up some pre-written responses with [b] tags and shiny things.

If I remember correctly, isn't it always: Crap, Zag beat me to the reason why this thread deserves a locking! *shakes fist*

;) I don't think it's too hard for the mods to say "Locked for: This reason" in a simple little reply. They should all do it. However, most of them do to begin with.
