There have been so many spammers, so many bad threads, and an infinate amount of users that shouldn't be users, and all of it has come about in the past week or so, and the mods have all been slow on the take, either by deleting threads, blacklisting users, or reigning authority. This is mostly going on in the (you guessed it) Flood. Something needs to be done. Recruit new mods, be on more, have some kind of deal where we know who's on and who's not so we can PM you guys right away.....but this has got to stop.

The Flood was essentially created for spam. It's not going to change, and it shouldn't.
No, it's an "Off topic forum", not a "Spam here and act like a dumbass" forum. And it's not like it's been going on forever. Well, it has, but not to this extent. A sudden "surge" of spam and extreme stupidity has erupted in the past week or so.

I know what you mean KrazyKorean4.

There's a sudden influx of spam, but I guess it may die down, or it might rise. Who knows?

The best we can do is continue Trying to report it.

I think we have enough Moderators, but we just hit that "bubble" of time where none of them are on right now. I've actually been keeping track and noticed that at this time (7-8 PM Bungie time zone) is when a lot the spam goes unchecked.

It's not the amount of mods that's the problem, per se. Because you could double the amount, and there will still be threads that sneak by, unchecked.

About the second half of your quote, JAF, Pez, and TGP have particular time slots that they cover. I'm not exactly sure when those slots are, but they're covering the time zones where most of us in America would (should) be asleep, I think.

But The Flood did break down tonight. A "professional spammer" just hit it by surprise.

Maybe they're not on at this time 'cause they're all eating their SPAM sandwiches and noodles?

No. The forum is for the discussion of upcoming stuff non-Bungie related, like upcoming movies, video games, etc. Spam isn't discussion. Neither are half of the threads that are in there right now. But in my time on Bungie, the Flood forum hasn't changed at all. It is still filled with the same repeat threads as last year. I honestly don't see why people are just recognizing the spam as spam now.

Again, the spam has always been there. No worse, no change at all. You're the one who's just now seeing the spam for what it is: spam.

Just incase my original post was a bit confusing.

We will continue to ban all spammers on sight.

The Flood was not created for spammers. Anybody who acts as if it was will get banned just as they would elsewhere. Abusing the resources of the forum isn't suddenly alright just because it's in the off-topic forum.

-- Steve'd appreciate it if people would stop rewarding these pathetic losers by responding to them. Please PM a moderator or use the bnetmods address (in .sig below) instead of giving them the fix they crave.

If he constantly makes new accounts, then there is little that mods can do

Report them live to me via MSN, I don't use the g-mail things because I find it cumbersome and such. As Iceman said, I am on at odd hours because of my location so I may be around to help.

Often I am listed as busy or away or something (I am doing stuff despite what people think) so just send me the link and I will do it when I can.

You'll get contact when you deserve contact!

Anyway, I've got this handy dandy link in my signature which does say which moderators are online. I mean, I put it there for a reason. Not to fill up my signature with pretty text.

EDIT: Signature. I only got one. :[
EDIT: Spaces. I only missed one. :[

True. If people did stop responding to them, then spam and junk will slowly stop alltogether. As Marty says, "don't feed the trolls"

  • 10.12.2006 2:43 AM PDT

I agree with your diagnosis, but disagree with your treatment. You want to know the truth? Most of the spammers you've seen recently is one or two really bored people (trust me, I have personally blacklisted somewhere between 30-40 accounts in the past two weeks, all made by one person).

What really needs to be done? Well, the permaban system needs to actually work. Right now, the system absolutely sucks and can be bypassed rather easily. Until that's fixed, we're pretty screwed and the only thing that can be done is to ignore the spammers and PM any moderator that is on.

My treatment would be requiring all new member having either a credit card or XBL gamertag. Does it suck? Yes. Would it help? Immensely.

If you see something that is against the rules on weekdays between 3AM and 11AM Bungie time, PM me.

Or we could convince Achronos to encode subliminal messages that say "OBEY" or something, LoL

What I was kind of getting at was- it's a cycle. There have been periods where I've noticed nothing but intelligence on this site, then times where it seems like every thread is full of idiots.

I remember a few months ago we were swimming in spam (and I naturally got the wrong impression of this place, being new and all) but that period of time was followed by relative peace.

Well now is the time where the spam rises up, I guess. If the cycle continues, then it'll die down until it comes back up again.

And Recon, about your post, you have to (and I assume you already) realize that there's always going to be people who reply to Spam threads just to say "GTFO, Spammer!" or "Don't FEED the TROLL." I guess that's just the way the forums go. I know that replying to spammers is against the rules, but based on some of the people that I've privately talked to, some only reply to spammers because they think it's funny (can be solved by Twinkie's suggestion of a pill that raises maturity.)

  • 10.12.2006 7:52 AM PDT

Recon is so true. If only members could simply ignore their posts and threads. Threads are easier to ignore then posts in constructive threads, I believe. However, if one were found in thread you are participating in if one would only say '(Insert ID) is a Spammer, Ignore him/her' and went about normal posting then everything would be honkey-dorry. It is my wish that this community could evolve into a disciplined one where said offenders are ignored wholly and after their gone, it would seem like they were never there, like Recon said. I try my best to have my actions along those lines when I am active.

I know what I say won't be popular, but here it goes:

Blasted Oaties is the Smartest Person On Bnet!!!

Last night was the most entertainment I've ever got from the flood. What's funny is that if it weren't for folks posting in his threads they wouldn't have stayed on the top. There were plenty of people getting mad at him and bumping his threads. There were even forum cops quoting Shishka's rules sticky. The forum cops were the best because they started spamming the different threads with copies of the rules that had the applicable parts bolded. Congratulations, guys, you can read. Now these forum cops, who claim to be concerned citizens of bnet, are actually adding to the spam. Then someone *cough original poster *cough started a thread about the spam in the same forum. It was a beautiful thing. Not only did he spam the forums he got the people of bnet to help him.

The post throttle limits anything they can really do to the forum. I just like to standby and watch. It's kind of like watching a riot. You just watch and be entertained. The solution to stopping the riot is obvious. Everyone just stop acting crazy. Just like the solution to limiting the effects of spam is obvious, but it won't ever happen. I'll be here watching.
