I'm everything. The when's, why's who's and what.

Tycho on the PS3 launch: "Well, you have not succeeded, not at anything laudable. You've kept young people in out in the elements for days through your ineptitude, this is true, but that is worth negapoints - a reverse scoring method exclusively for jackasses that starts at zero, and actually goes down from there."

This thread pretty defines every kind of troll. Troll (to me) are people who just go around posting useless crap in threads. Like "I like cake" or who just post nothing but "*shoots a member*" in threads.

Apparently, Trolls are a good thing.

But trolls are the bad ones. Yes, it's confusing. But I guess there's a difference.

I encourage you to read that thread about Trolls/trolls. Thanks for digging it up, Hobo.

Basically, there are two types of "T/trolls:"

Troll (uppercase T) is a member who plays devil's advocate and adds "spice" to the forum. They speak their mind and enter threads with the purpose of causing controversy.

troll (lowercase t) is a flamer/spammer who links people to shock sites and utterly hijacks threads.

And in general how are these 2 types viewed.

One is viewed with respect (somewhat), and the other with disdain. At least, that's what they tell me.

Is it good to have any type of trolls?

Beats me. We're still gonna say "Don't feed the Troll," so the word will always have the negative connotation, because it's a negative word to begin with.

'Tis confusing, but there are two types of Trolls, more or less.

Trolls are looked upon as Gods among men.

trolls are usually blacklisted and/or permabanned.

Ok, you guys are going to confuse the heck out of Rant.

Rant, the Trolls, is a group of uh.. Well, people. Pretty regular people. Nothing too special. Of course, there's all the self-proclaimed stuff about them.

If you didn't understand Iceman's posts, re-read them with this guide:

trolls = Forum trolls, bad

"trolls" (or Trolls) are people that spend their time posting pointless things in the hope of making someone laugh/be annoyed.

At least, that's my idea of it.

Trolls are just idiots who post with the aim of annoying and distrupting people.

Ignore this capital T = good stuff people are feeding you.

Trolls really arent even those that post useless crap in threads, its more those that step in and have no real feedback to give, but try to de-rail a subject. Its not the people that disagree with the original poster, but those that disagree and have to reasoning other than to just piss someone off. Also coming into a thread and not having anything good to say just to make a post and draw attention to yourself would be trolling in my books.

Now another form would be someone that is "anti-halo" or "anti-bungie" coming here and posting "I HATE BUNGIE" or whatever to draw attention to the fact that they dislike Bungie. Again you can voice your opinion against something you dont like about Bungie, but providing valid information as to why helps, other wise its just flame bait to get the fan boys riled up.

This is a lie, we're not regular people. We represent the mostly married with children, out-of-school, working 9-5, anti-emo, like to play video games for fun minority here at Bungie.net.

Agreed, but these definitions will change once you step outside of Bungie.net.

Interesting...

I've been called a 'troll' and accused of 'derailing' a topic by some of the very highest authority on Bungie.net.

The reason was because I posted multiple times in 'The News' thread ridiculing Frankie's gushing endorsement of the Microsoft HD DVD Drive.

Now, although I don't think my observations were wrong, and am not going to be convinced otherwise, I accept my multiple posting and harsh tone could be construed as 'trolling' the thread.

So I guess a real troll is somebody who posts offensive and/or inflammatory remarks that subvert or otherwise disrupt the intended topic of conversation.

Well you have to figure in authority....

So the intepretation of such things is subjective... sure.

What happens next is the act. The act of blacklisting a user or closing a thread thus categorises and cements certain behaviours, views and/or inane jibberish as undesirable 'trolling' or whatever.

So yeah, it's subjective but authority makes it definitive. Of course, it's perfectly acceptable to disagree with authority :-)

Maybe because you did it multiple times, rather than just once. If you just went into the thread every day and posted, "FRANKIE IS JUST A MARKETING PLOY" and not actually adding to a conversation at hand, then it would be considered spam.

Sure, I've not got a problem with that. I think I said something about the fact I'd posted multiple times in my original response *shrug*

Obviously different people here have different definitions of the term "troll" and Im glad to hear people relate them and also give the reasons why. But apparently the offical meaning of the term on THIS site ultimately depends on how a mod views that term. So maybe we could get a mod to pop in and give their defintion since when they apply the term it can have consequences.

At the risk of sounding sarcastic... I'd say they might just view the term subjectively. LOL.

That said, there are undoubtedly times when there are clear cut cases of 'trolling' and 'spamming'. Some issues and discussions, as well as some responses and objections to certain views, ultimately require a large degree of intepretation and subjective reasoning.
