how dose the dual wielding work i have read the section on dual wielding in the FAQ's. However there is something that i am still un clear on and that is where it says: "You can stop dual wielding at any time by pressing melee attack (discards extra weapon) or by pressing Y to switch to your secondary weapon." the bit i am unsure on is the second line where it says press Y to switch to your secondary weapon. it dose not say weather this will discared the weapon you were dual wielding with. what dose everyone else think about this. it would be cool if you could retain the weapon so you could swap back and foth.

Watch the E3 2003 demo again. MC picks up a second SMG from the Lt., runs around shooting grunts and jackals, then comes over the rise and sees the 5 jackals (just before they get run down by the warthog).
At that point, MC switches from two SMGs to one battle rifle.
Think about that a second....
That definitely implies that, all told, MC will be carrying three weapons, should he choose to dual wield at any given time.
Cool, huh?
Of course, Bungie says that anything about the game we know now may change before the game is done, so we'll see.

only single handed weapons will be able to dual wield so what if you are carying three dual wieldable weapons like a SMG, a Needler and plasma rifle. will you be able to ulternate between the tree of them to ulternate the dual wield combo. you be able to do this by pressing the Y button three hits of Y would cycle through all the posable combinations.

that would be quicker than droping on weapon then hitting Y to swap weapons and rearanging that way.

In theory that would be correct.
We won't know for sure for another four, five, or six months.
Good theory.

i remember reading somewhere that the second weapon drops as you change back to your other weapon , and also that is drops as you enter a vehicle , so i'm pretty sure u cant keep the second dual wieldable weapon . unluky dudes .

o ye , i am new to the forums too , so hi to all . : )

I was under the impression (please correct me if Im wrong) you will only be able to carry two weapons in Halo 2 as in Halo. Not only that, but you can dual wield if they are one handed weapons, there in lies the tactical downside of dual wielding if you empty all your ammo, your boned.... Any thoughts?

PS how it works from the video clips Ive seen around the net is you press y to change weapon as normal and hold it down to dual wield, kinda like picking up I guesss with having to hold down x. Check it out yourself Controller Setup and yes I am aware this link has been posted a million times, just answering the guys question

Not that it's official, but did you look at the 2003 E3 footage? That's in-game play going on, and it appears to show (I know, I'm repeating myself) MC carrying 3 weapons....
I guess I'm just optimistic.

i reckon your right there cus MC does get his smgs out again after the warthog crash aswell as the battle rife....of course that was 12 months ago so the chances of a balancing change by bungie are high.

JUST A THEORY BUT I THINK IT WILL WORK THIS WAY:
While holding a 1handedweapon (e.g. SMG) and standing over a second 1handedweapon (e.g. Needler) You can either:
Hold X to switch your SMG for a Needler or
Hold Y to dual wield this new neelder simultaneously with the SMG

Right you've chosen to dual wield and your now holding your two weapons (pretend these weapons are a single weapon) You can switch between weapons by tapping Y (e.g. SMG+NEEDLER ----> BATTLE RIFLE ----> SMG+NEEDLER).

Ok. I'm certain that if you press B, you will drop your left arm weapon (e.g. Needler in this case) and go back to using your SMG single wielded.

I also think that the left arm weapons wont be able to be reloaded because there is no ammo information in the top left of your HUD (see the trailers). So X will probably be used to reload the SMG alone and your needler will either be dropped or just left empty.

Thus, Dual Wielding will probably not be a permanant choice, just a temporary addition to your arsenal for the time being.

However, this is just my opinion (and i'm most likely wrong because people with be pissed off about having to drop, exchange, reload, exchange, dual just to reload their second weapon) Another theory I had was that you reload your weapons seperately with X (for right arm) and a button from the d-pad (for left) but i doubt bungie will use the d-pad as action buttons

Rather than Needler+SMG => Battle rifle => Needler+SMG it will work something like this:
Needler+SMG - Needler => Battle rifle => SMG. So that, MC drops his left handed dual wielded weapon when he pulls out his two handed weapon.

I'll think you'll definately reload both, like you said it would piss too many people off, it will probably just take longer as MC wil have to reload each gun seperately.

I'm pretty sure that you keep the left-hand weapon when you switch to your two-handed. I have a somewhat relative question though. It looks to me as if the energy sword is one-handed, why can't you dual-wield while using that?

 • 05.23.2004 8:15 AM PDT

Dual wielding swords is (no-offense i see what you mean) the stupidest thing ever! Whats the point in dual wielding if
A: You cant even melee with them
B: They have 1-hit kills single handed anyway

I see what you mean, the aesthetic side would be cool, charging at a foe with two swords would be funny but as ive sed...pointless.

Could you throw grenades while dual wielding? That would be kinda hard and would be a downside

 • 05.23.2004 8:33 AM PDT

SB-117

No, you cant, when dual wielding, the left trigger is now used to fire the left weapon separately. (So th grenade throwing trigger is overwridden) If you want to throw a grenade you've to to drop the left weapon throw it and then hold Y to pick it back up.

Thats a no no as they've said that melee attack will make you drop your left hand weapon. Therefore to use the sword in melee attack, which I guess is fairly standard with the trigger as well would cause you to dump a weapon, conflict of interests there I feel. Maybe its a super duper big energy sword and so it needs you to balance out the weight with your other hand?

The 2004 demo was different from the 2003 demo in that you could only carry a maximum of two weapons. So, if you picked up a gun for dual wielding, your alternate gun dropped. I'm sure of this, because I experimented with it for a while.

Thank you for clearing that up, Shiska.

 • 05.23.2004 12:00 PM PDT

Of course, things may change between E3 and release. Y'know, just when you think you've figured everything out they go ahead and throw THAT in too.

The reason there was no ammo counter was because the HUD was simply a placeholder until the real HUD. they said so in the FAQ. The theory of no reloads doesnt sound like the intuitive bungie i know. as far as dual weilding, i hope it is more of a permanent thing, like you saw in the 2k3 trailer.

And shishka, thanks for commenting. ive been all over the internet, trying to find good previews about the game, and answers to the very question you answered. almost all of the Halo 2 impressions are things like "You can totally kick a guy out of a car!" and "You can hold a weapon in each hand!". Stuff that every fanboy knows, and has known since 2k3 E3. Its good to see the finer details in the stuff that makes us excited
