Osmosis!

1
His thin manicured fingers held the tip of the blade loosely by his side. He brought it up past his shoulder let it rest there for a moment, as he surveyed the surroundings once again, checking everything was in place. It was, as he knew it would be. He began bringing the knife forward, ready to release it into his target. As he did so, his mind washed over several memories; waking up in his sleeping quarters, his Bonsai’s First Flower, his Master and his first Solo. It was always the same memories, in the same order, at the same time.

His arm completed its arc and released the blade and it landed with a barely audible thud an inch below his intended point, as it always did. A frown passed across his pale complexion. Considering he was throwing from over 30 feet away, to any normal person this would have been admirable, however, he was not anyone normal. He would have to amend this affliction soon, before his Master reviewed his progress in a week. Perhaps, if he had not corrected this before then, he would ask his Master how to deal with it. It was not unheard of, to ask help from your Elders in this particular institution, in fact it was encouraged. The Elders did not fix it themselves; rather, they showed the Apprentices how it was done. Independence was encouraged, but total independence was fatal. To be successful was to utilize the resources surrounding you.

The Apprentice Assassin silently plucked his knife from the willow trunk and returned to the Main Hall for the Evening Meal.

Perhaps some background is required here. The Assassin School is one where select individuals are trained in the arts of killing. The School specializes in training Students to be silent killers, or Ignacio’s as they are more fondly known. The Apprentices are normally born inside the School, whose parents are Ignacios themselves. However, there is a select few that are the offspring of the Ignacio’s victims.

All of the Children live in the Nursery until they turn 5 years of age. Then, they are enrolled fully into the School. The manner of being enrolled in the Assassins School is unlike any other. Instead of signing their names onto a piece of paper, they chose a single seed from a bowl filled with thousands of different types. This is then planted and nurtured by the Apprentice. The seed is grown as a bonsai; the students stunt, trim and nurture it, learning important values such as patience and steady hands. Values which are very useful when your life involves sharp, elegant things.

The Apprentice can and does ask help from one of the 25 Elders. This Elder then becomes the Apprentice’s Master, following them through their life, guiding and instructing daily, testing every month to review their progress. On their 22nd birthday, they have their Final Assessment in front of the Elders. This decides how successful the student will be.

One may ask why is there a school to teach an ‘art’ of killing? Surely death is the cause of all that is wrong in this world, perhaps these people are the Devil’s spawn. And how much work would the Graduates get anyway? No-one would hire them, or associate with them, for fear of waking up with their bread knife in their leg. Well, one would be wrong.

It's a bit short, but the second chapter is en route
