What are your dodging techniques. I know to keep moving all the time. Lots of time I can tell when I'm evenly matched but sometimes I just can't seem to hit my target. I'm talking one vs. one fight here. Let's not talk too much about lag here and assume that all players have a reasonable ping.

I do a little left, a little right, a little more right, a little left and I inculed some front and back in this. I even try an occasional duck. I don't feel like I've got the dodging thing down though. It seems like I think, OK, left, right, left, left, left but I cannot find any consistent dodging technique.

What spurred this is that I'm on a server where I know for sure there is no cheating going on cuz it's controlled by a trusted source. I sneak up behind a great player who is constantly moving. I dump a whole pistol clip at him and he doesn't even know I'm behind him. I don't even hit him once(no comments on my aim please). He turns around a slays me.

Are there some super dark secret dodging tactics?

The only key you need to know is never stop moving and avoid moving in one direction for too long; and if someone is firing at you, one second is too long. You didn't hit him because he wasn't at the spot you were firing at a half-second after you hit your fire button. That is lag, your shooting at something that is not there. Shoot at where you think he will be.

I wonder if the Wolf thinks the Moon listens when he howls at it.

other then the art of the flying ninja technique the only really "dodging"in halo is pressing a and d .

The main thing is to never keep going in one direction at any one speed. That's how snipers figure out where to shoot. Even if you're just walking to the hog, you never know who's watching, so do some back and forths and such. That really messes up snipers, and once they miss, it's obvious where they are. Same goes for up close fights, as it's hard to lead someone who goes back and forth randomly. If you're up against someone good, they'll be getting headshots 99% of the time. Duck a lot. Surprisingly, it works for me anyway.

K, here is how it works.

When good players are playing halo in public servers, what they sometimes do is try to remember specific players strafes, that way they can kill that player quicker. For those of you that have played me in the gathering, you will notice I don't play so well in my first map.

Do not duck, it doesnt work unless you are close range and you expect the guy to be aiming head height, doing this in a normal strafe is a bad idea. When I am playing against a noob, after I shoot him twice with my pistol, he will immediately try to find cover, he will pretend to be strafing, but really he is trying to get behind the hill, so i simply aim there. Do not move forward and backwards, it is easier to hit you like this, because your left/right velocity will be less.

When shooting, fire when you think you are going to hit, it is excuseable near 200 ping, but when your ping is 100 and less, if someone is running in a straight line you should kill them in a sniper bullet, and be able to put your first 2 bullets into them before letting them go into strafe.

If you want to improve you level of halo, playing in public servers is not the way to do it, but if you are too lazy to play matches then try playing in a pub and allow yourself no nades/heavies.

Now, in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time. I know who you are. You are destiny.

Well, never stop moving and shooting. And if you do, either be reloading, taking cover, or asking fer help on team chat.

1v1 dodging, one very easy way to dodge is to tap adadadad etc etc. With a normal connection, a player will either have to move his mouse 4cm every half a second to get a decent lead, or only be able to hit you half the time.

Of course, 1v1 matches I find very misleading, and it's tantamount to suicide with more players - it's incredbly easy to be flanked and finished in 3 shots as from the side you're stationary.

In multiple opponent gunbattles, I've found that strafing while moving towards an objective is usually a good idea (eg cover or forwards) but don't move in direct zig-zags (ie diagonally right, then diagonally left) as you're going to match velocities each time and look like you're moving in a straight line to someone from the side again. Try a mix of going forward and diagonally or sideways and diagonally, is what I'd reccomend.

Oh yes, if you attack from behind, use a grenade first. Much harder to miss with one of those.

Don't ever side step( go left and right, left and right) too fast, you don't know how many people do it so fast that it's useless, they might as well be standing still.
If they are indeed side-stepping too fast, all you do is shoot in the middle and bam, it's usually a easy snipe or 3sk, at least for me. I love when people do it too fast and complain, but making mistakes is the only way to learn.
You can go ahead and try, side-step fast and you will see that players will be landing more hits then they would if you were not side-stepping quickly.

No walking in straight line unless no enemies are present. A lot of people make the mistake of walking straight to say, a rocket or sniper, without just giving a quick glance at the surroundings.

If you are being double-teamed, go left and right and also up and down. Sometimes is saves you from getting shot from the sides, since if you shoot someone on the side while they side-step, is usually easy to get head-shots, it has worked for me and saved me from lots of 2 vs 1 situations.

Learn how oppenents shoot, do they like to shoot you while they are fully exposed or do they take cover while shooting?
In my old clan, when we used to do things like 3 vs 3's, someone would make a vid, and there was us pistoling each other, but when you see the opponent, they only things you see barely is the tip of their helmets, thus they can shoot you all they want, but when you shoot back, is harder to land hits on them.
You can do this, for example in Blood Gulch, in the hills. I usually only stick my reticle out enough to see my opponent, so when they shoot back, most of their hits land of the hill and not my head.

Learn if they "spray and pray" or if they shoot smart. A good example of this is people using pistol, they just shoot hoping to land shots, instead of taking shots that will definetly hit. It's better to learn this fast, so next time you see someone with sniper, you can just show only a little bit of your head, and they will start shooting, praying to hit. If they do this, they run out of ammo and you have an easier kill.

Do not jump thinking you will dodge bullets. People think jumping is a harder snipe or pistol take down, but for most decent players, it's a free shot. Only jump if, for example, if your enemy's shields are down, and they are taking cover in a hill, you can jump and shoot them while they crouch or side-step, and get a unexpected kill.

Don't drink to excess– You might shoot at tax-collectors... and miss

Computer: Power Mac G5 CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (2.2) Number Of CPUs: 2 CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB Memory: 1.25 GB Bus Speed: 900 MHz

ATi Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition

I don't know what causes this: Other people, (the ones I'm trying to kill), strafe back and forth and they seem to do it quickly. When I try it it often seems like my on-screen persona does not respond as quickly to my keyboarding– like I keep going left even after I press right.

Just had a thought. Opened my keyboard preferences and sped up the response and repeat settings. I'll give it a try.

Edit: It seemed to work better, but I had low pings on both servers I tried– usually makes things better. I'll see if it seems better over time.

It's gotta be a connection/lag issue then. Unless that occurs even when you host.

Really? It usually works for me, and I find it very hard to hit people doing that.

Then again, I bring massive lag with me wherever I go...

Well, you have to do it real fast to get it. Sometimes when I play some people, they side-steo too fast, and all you do is shoot in the middle and your hits will land. If they do it too fast, MC basically is just in the same place, it's like they are standing still basically.

Yes the guy a few posts above me is correct. I love when people jump. Why? It's hard to change direction in midair, basically allowing me a free shot, knowing exactly where they'll land. Yep, if you go left-right-left-right etc., you basically are always in the same spot, and then it's really easy to just shoot in the middle, or right-left-right-left accordingly.

But then again the other end of the spectrum is those people who begin going in one direction, and forget to turn around, making an easy pistol or grenade kill.

I bet many of you have read some of the Dune si-fi books. Remember the sand worms? They were attracted to rythmic steps. To not attract their attention you had to learn how to walk without a rythmic pattern. Works for avoiding snipers, too.

Use teh force!

Be one step ahead!

Oh, one actual piece of advice is to use a hog to get around (while not actually fighting). It's harder to hit a hog with the same amount of firepower as a person.
