Recently, GameJunkieJim created a thread relating to an interview in one of our forums. It remained un-stickied for it's first hour (rough estimate) of it's life. It continued to rack up posts untill it was pinned. From then on, it probably got (rough estimate) 2 or 3 more posts in the next day. What am I trying to say is that nobody looks at the stickies. No surprise. Likely, the most popular idea to fix this problem is Iceman's idea of turning the symbol into, a sticky (Plasma Gernade) but I think this will not work. Yes, it will turn heads in our newer crowd, but still won't catch your eyes when a new thread has been pinned, so here's my idea:

A seperate activity system for stickies. Just like the system in place for the un-pinned threads, but one in place for the stickies. Let me show you what I mean.

Here

See how newer, more active threads are green, hot topics have a flame, along with the exclamation, and the older threads, are regular orange. I was thinking to give the in-active stickies a brown, cracked symbol, much like the one for in-active, un-pinned threads now, but I think that would give an impression that the thread is un-important. So I left that alone. I think this system would be effective, it would let people know any new stickies that were put in place. I would like to know what the community thinks, so feedback would be much appreciated.

Provided those stickies could only dropped to about a third down the page then I think that would work. I also think maybe the rules sticky should be at the top alone.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

I don't follow what you're suggesting. Give an inactive sticky its own symbol? Why?

I left the in-active stickies alone, if you see the picture. They still have the orange symbol. Sorry, but I don't understand what your asking.

I think i understand what you're getting at but i really don't see how it will help solve any problems. If someone can't notice an already very obvious pinned thread, what's the chances of them noticing it if it had a different symbol?

As for the idea of having an icon indicating an old thread, while i guess it might be interesting to know, how will this help people notice sticky and post in them?

So while i agree that there must be some way to get more people to pay attention to pinned threads, i don't see how those ideas would work. I honestly can not see how people can miss them. Perhaps someone should conduct a survey of people who don't pay atttention to stickies, and ask why they don't. That way we might come up with an idea that will work.

People tend to ignor the stickies at the top. You get used to them then they blend in. If they were part way down and moved they would be more noticable.

I've already read all the stickies so I don't pay attention to the top anymore to see if there's any new ones. Maybe a symbol for a new sticky would be kind of useful.

I wouldn't mind seeing different symbols to indicate different types of stickies. Rules threads are different from ideas threads which are different from interesting discussions. It has the potential to work...it probably won't work, but surely it can't hurt to try.

Alternatively, just remove any special sticky image. Make them look just like regular threads, and people will read them as such. Just let them move around amongst themselves, at the top of the first page.

I sure as hell do not notice new stickies unless I'm looking for another sticky. I think this is a great idea.

  • 10.15.2006 10:06 AM PDT

Great idea!

  • 10.15.2006 10:10 AM PDT

Yeah, decent idea. Newer stickies could have something to make them stick(ie) out more and get noticed. For the most part, a lot of folk need to just, "Open up their ears and clean out their eyes, think it'd be nice to be alive."
