Ok, this started last night. I use Kaspersky Lab Anti-Virus Software, and it's pretty good in most situations. But last night, out of the corner of my eyes, I see the Windows Security Center icon just pop out alerting me Kaspersky has turned itself off. I decide not to panic, and double click Kaspersky. But instead of the program, a message shows up, saying exactly this:

In order to use Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal Pro, you need a license key. In order to continue using the program, you may purchase [link]purchase a new license key[/link] and add it to the program by pressing the "Add Key" button.

Now I know what most of you guys are thinking: that I have a trial version of Kaspersky. But no, I have the full version. I know this, because when I got my computer fixed by my church teacher's husband (nice man) around November 20, 2005, he gave me a free full copy of Kaspersky Personal Pro. This was almost an year ago, and the trial's only 30 days.

Ok, now here's the thing: I checked my hardrive for any known Kaspersky related files, and none of them (mostly .ppl files) relates to a license key. And the wierdest thing is, it was working fine as ever until last night at around 8:50 PM, and it just shut itself off, and pretty much took the license key with it to hell. This just pisses me of big time, but I'm doing the best I could to stay calm and try to get this fixed before the internet hackers and viruses realizes my front door is open.

Some of you may already know, but I've been getting many network attacks over the past couple of months, but it has been stopping, from about 40 network attack attempts a day to a maximum of only 2-4 a day nowadays. But now that Kaspersky is gone, I don't want to linger in the computer too long because of this problem. Does anyone here know what the hell is going on? Please, I deperately need help, no, my computer desperately needs help.

I am going to email my church teacher today to ask her husband if he can come over and see what is wrong, and if Kaspersky did really freak out last night, he must have the full version along with the license key for me to reinstall again. I'm also going to post this same post on the Kaspersky forums, and quite possibly the Flood forums (please forum ninjas, don't ocunt this as spam just because I posted the same thing in different forums).

But until then, I need a new, and temporary anti-virus software. No, I don't mean a freakin' trial, 'cause who knows, it might take more than 30 days to fix this. I mean a free, permanent, and well-trusted anti-virus software, that I can use until I get Kaspersky fixed. Does anyone here know some good ones?

Please guys, I really need some help over here. I don't know what to do, and right now I may be calmly typing this like a man, but sooner or later, once harmful things tend to get in (God forbid by the 7th power), I might be one of those people who rip out their hair in a maniac way. Please, any help would be gratefully appreicated.

You download -blam!- don't you? Seriously though, are you sure it wasn't on a year subscrition?

What? Play a game? FOR FUN???
This concept of fun confuses and infuriates me!

Well..I can suggest a couple things for download.
http://www.free-av.com/
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
http://www.safer-networking.org/

Also, if your wanting to buy a new Anti-Virus protection, I highly reccomend Spy Sweeper. It does a disturbingly good job of sweeping your PC.

What do you mean by "I download -blam!-"??? If you mean I pirated it, you're completely wrong. As I explained, my church teacher's husband bought the full version.

And even if it was in an yearly subscription, it shouldn't have unsubscribed last night, it should've unsubcribed next month. (Today is October, and I got the full version on November of 2005. "1 year" would be next month, on the 20th.)

And to ConMan, thanks for your help. But I'm wondering, is Free-AV well-trusted? And would my Windows Security Center recognize it? Also, does this program use up alot of resources like Norton? I don't want my games and misc. files to lag like crazy just because I turned this program on.

Aside from the more common ones like avast and spybot
(which you should definitely have)

A-squared is a really good adware program.

Since you're dealing with more network stuff though, I think avast would be best.

I just cheked out Avast!, and man, I'm impressed. But there doesn't seem to be a "buy" option (this is a good thing for me xD), does that mean Avast! is free and just as good as other leading anti-virus softwares? Also, is it well trusted? And does it use yp alot of resources like Norton does? I hope not, because I don't want to lag in Halo or anything. Kaspersky never lagged my computer unless I'm performing a full virus scan, will Avast! be the same?

I meant to ask if you download pr0n, that's probably why you've got so many security issues. Just because he gave it to you on 11/20, doesn't he he bought and used it for a month before that.

AVG Free I use it on my own computer, actually, receives free, constant updates, etc. Highly recommended

If you don't like the first one, try this one. I've heard its basically the same thing as the first, just a matter of preference to which one. Again, it's also free, receives constant updates.

Other Free Things

Try a Firewall if you're concerned about attacks. I suggest this one, it's free and receives constant updates, I use it on my own computer, and it's FAR more effective than the cheap Windows Firewall.

Ok, I installed Avast!, but WTF to the 7th power guys. You guys said it was free, and when I meant free, I meant free as in sort of like Zone Alarm free, where you just get the full version without paying, and without piracy. Avast! asked me for a License Key, and since I didn't have one, it turned into a whack 60-day trial crap. WTF.

Aw WTH, I just checked Zonelabs.com, and even Zone Alarm you need to pay for. And it's a 15 day for a trial version... Wow, now my computer will never be safe.

It should stay anyway though...Unless they fixed it or something. Or you downloaded the wrong version.

The main point of avast though is to scan, though it's background check thing is extremely, and I mean EXTREMELY good.

Avast isn't free? That's news to me. Go try AVG Free, that should be perfectly fine. I highly recommend it enough that I use it on my computer as well.

And ZoneAlarm is free, you need to get the free version of it, though. Don't bother with the trial version, it blows having that annoying popup tell you "2 days left". When you install it, there should be an option asking if you want the free version or the trial full version, go with the free version.

Oh, and no offense, but while you may be in considerable panic, unless you've got a file-sharing client open or some proggy has unfettered net access, you really don't have to worry too much about attacks. That being said, don't get snippy about other people's advice.

Hope this helps.

aka lino4

Most of the PC issues posted here are the result of PEBKAC.

Panda's pretty good, I haven't used it for long yet, but I hear it's nice, and so far it's nice. Also, Zone Alarm is totally free, though it doesn't hurt to pay for ZA Pro.

IMO Avast is free, and is an overall great proggy. Its on-par with norton. Get that. AGV is slow and ugly-looking :D

Yeah I never really liked AVG for some reason. It really depends what you're looking for really though.

Antivirus/trojans:
avast(free i thought)
a-squared(free)

antispyware/adware
spybot(free)
adaware(free)
sytemdoctor(not free)

I have Avast! for free, works a treat. Also got a little-known realtime protector known as F-Prot. Haxxorz 0 , F-Prot 1337. And counting.

Sorry guys for being mad at you, when I shouldn't have. I just couldn't ease my already-uneasy mind when Avast! asked me for a license key, and since I didn't have one, it turned into a 60 day trial...

I used this link: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-professional.html, and clicked the English download. Did I click/download the wrong thing/version? 'Cause from what I hear everyday in the Maw is that Avast! is free and effective. And also, I scanned all last night, and man it's faster than Kaspersky! It takes 2 hours (sometimes more) to scan all 40 Gig of my Hardrive, but last night it took me 40 minutes with Avast. But I just want the free, full version (and I mean from the official site, not piracy, I despise piracy). For those of you who knows alot about Avast!, or have the full version for free, where did you guys download it from avast.com?

And ok, I guess I'll start usiung Zone Alarm. Windows Firewall was never much help to me anyways.

I'm fairly surprised no one has mentioned Sygate Personal for a firewall solution, it's free, easy to use, and highly dependable. The only downside is every time you boot up it gives you a form to register or continue free use. The free version doesn't have a limited timespan to use it but is missing a few features. Those missing aren't usually needed though. =D

Download here

Of course, you should still have Avast running as well, just for extra protection. =P

That's probably why it's not recommended, no offense. ¬_¬

I don't know of any other free programs to help you, but I did have a similar kind of experience with Norton a couple of weeks ago. It would randomly turn off and say your trial period expired and you needed to activate it. Only difference between you and me is that I just had to hit the handy "Activate" button below the warning, and I was as good as new. Haven't gotten it for a while now, so I' guess it's fixed.

I just don't get why there are so many Norton bashers out there. The only time I know it affects performance is during startup, when it loads its processes and services into memory, making you unpaitient people wait one whole minute before it's ready to go. You could get up and strech, rest your eyes from all the hours you spent looking at a monitor. It's a great opportunity to keep your health in mind for all you couch (or office chair) potatoes out there.

To sum things up: from my experience, if your machine is capable, Norton has little effect on gaming performance like other AV software.

I finally got the full version of Avast! Anti-Virus. It's working well so far. Thank you guys, for all your help and recommendations. I might still have been panicking right now if it weren't for you guys. =D

R.I.P. for now Kaspersky. I shall buy you again once I'm an adult. =)
