Mourne not your comrades who must dwell / too strong to strive -
Within each steel-bound coffin of a cell, / Buried alive;
But rather mourne the apathetic throng / The cowed, and the meek -
Who see the world’s great anguish and its wrong / And dare not speak.

No, I don't think you should be able to. Deleting your own posts might be okay, but not threads. And since you can just edit posts, then it's pretty pointless.

In my opinion, it comes down to the fact that, as has been said many times, once you start a thread, you no longer own it. If people had the ability to lock their own threads, some of them would probably just lock any thread that didn't go the way they had planned.

So, just leave it to the moderators. And if you start a thread that turns to spam, you can always just change the title to something like "lock this thread," and leave it up to a moderator to decide if it should really be locked.

I have actually tried that before, and the moderators don't seem to get around to locking it.

Wait wait wait, apologies, I mesed this up. Should you be able to lock your theads, and delete your own messages? I think deleting your own threads is a bit much. Sorry for the mixup.

I remember raising this before, and Recon said that it would be abused. If someone made a topic that didn't go their way they'd lock it to avoid too much more embarrassment.

Discuss.

NO to delete your own thread
but yes to a different verion of locking it so that Mods can tell the difference between a user locked thread and a mod locked thread.

Editting isn't just the same.

You can't edit really old threads.

A thread in a public forum belongs to every member not just the original poster.

Even after ignoring the obvious problems with people deleting their thread after posting something against the rules my answer would still be no. I don't even like it when a mod deletes/locks a thread at the original poster's request. Just because you create a thread doesn't mean it is yours. The thread becomes a place of public discussion. It is 'owned' by every member of the forum not just the original poster. Just because you aren't interested in the topic anymore or you have embarassed yourself by saying something stupid doesn't mean that others should have their topic taken away.

I see some threads that people start and when it turns out the majority of posts disagree with them they edit out the thread and ask for deletion or locking. I think too many get their request. You don't own a thread. If people disagree with your post suck it up.

Theres no risk of people deleting offensive posts they make in a thread, they can just edit it out anyway.

voted yes for locking, no for deleting our own topics.

I'd love it, but it's probably a bad idea.

Its a good idea, but if you want one of your threads locked for a reason, you can simply just ask a moderator to do it

Too many problems.

- Posts could be removed so moderators can't take action.
- People could delete then repost things to clean out other replies.

And more that others have posted. You can just tamper with it in so many ways.

You think it got what it takes to be..?.

God forbid you send me one of those I was checking for cool gamers and saw you messages too, I will scream to the top of my lungs and smash this damn screen/BlackBerry to pieces! You've been warned -_-

If we had the ability to lock our threads (or delete) what makes moderators.....moderators? If you were unsure about the thread, then you should've clicked the Cancel button.

I think that if you put something stupid up like i did just a couple of minutes ago you should be able to delete it but locking down your post i'm not so sure about.

Just because you have the ability to lock the annoying spam threads (Lock, not delete) and delete your own annoying/spam posts, doesn't mean that you will. People will still need moderators to keep the peace.

No, this would not work. In discussions where there are two sides of an argument, and people are disagreeing the creator would just says their opinion then lock it. This would be horrible in places like body politic. Or in thread regarding theories for Halo. People can already edit their post. If they think they said something stupid then they can just change it they do not need to delete it.

I don't want that. Spammers would create numerous threads, then lock them, creating an ugly page full of red.

Isn't there some limit to how many threads you can create per day? Besides, if they did that moderators would probably do a temporary 1-7 day blacklisting.
