"Whatever exists, whatever in creation exists without my knowledge exists without my consent. These anonymous creatures may seem little or nothing in the world. Yet the smallest crumb can devour us. Any smallest thing beneath yon rock out of men's knowing. Only nature can enslave man and only when the existence of each last entity is routed out and made to stand naked before him will he be properly suzerain of the earth."

1) If someone has a link to an address this is 500 characters long, they can use TinyURL. It's not that hard, and if someone asks, they can be pointed to the site.

2) There's a line limit, which I think is 10 or 12 maximum.

So a person should be able to make 500 links in their signature, provided they use one character per link? Wouldn't it be easy then to hide a link to a shock site in one of those?

But you can easily get around being directed to the shock site by turning on the previews.

The difference between one link and 500 is that if you have one link, you only need to make one preview before you realize that the link is against the rules and the person should be blacklisted. It takes about 5 seconds. Now with 500, the moderators have to check hundreds of links (and if the person is a spammer trying to cause trouble via links, 500) to make sure that there is nothing wrong.

Ach! Was ist los?

You don't need a long signature. The ones I see on a daily basis are obnoxious enough already.

, or a limit on the characters you see, not the code.

Now that, I would love, it's really annoying when I want to get a few links in my signature, yet want to have something else in there to.

Also, about what you said "Perhaps a line limit?" there is already a 10 line limit, just so you know.

In my opinion, signatures are fine the way they are. What could do with some work is the text limit on a group's homepage....

Perfect, but otherwise, get your facts right before you begin to complain.

What a person places above their signature is far more important than what they put into it.

Even tacky signatures like mine don't use up the limit.

If you need more links than that, you need to just host a web page with links on it and make a single link to that page in your signature.

Such as this: http://bathroomreader.org/jump.html Seven groups linked, plus Bungie's group search feature, and it only takes one line in a signature.

Yeah, my sig is gaudy, it may be time to change it.

Jim, your signature is hawt. Nice use of periods, asteriks, and dashes. I wish I had such skills. I feel as if my signature is too fat, but I have so many good quotes and links I'd love to put in it.. :P

I have to disagree. No offence Jim, but it looks like someone mashed together a bunch of double stuffed Oreos and called it a signiture.

None taken. I actually was looking for something that grabbed attention, no matter how bad it looked, but I just may make a new one.

Yeah, I was making a semi-joke.. Of course, I still think Jim's is good, because it's so simple.. In a way.

I don't know. Anyway, on the topic, I don't see a huge need for more characters, but I do always miss out on some links or quotes I'd love to share.

I've seen sites that only allow 200 characters. Be thankful for 500.

If some people got there way, it would be 25 characters. Long enough to say "Hi my name is _____".

  • 10.21.2006 9:27 PM PDT

So you're saying that characters in the signature that are a part of a URL or formatting code shouldn't count towards the length of the signature? You're getting free database space, be thankful for it.

Even if you have a link in your signature that's only seven characters long with maybe 64 characters of URL and formatting code, it's going to take up 71 characters of database space.

I think 500 characters is a reasonable limit.

There IS a line limit. I believe it's 8 lines.

(10:20:17 PM) Pezza: You were the one with the video camera breathing heavily. Of course you saw.

Eh, sometimes I dont get as much into a sig as I would like so I just end up making it simple. Kinda' wish it was a larger limits sometimes.

No signature found. Click here to change this.

I don't think it should be unlimited, because if it were, people's signatures would be four times as long as their posts.

(And imagine when Recon Number 54 stops by!)

But it should be increased, definately, to at least 1000 characters.
