Ok, were not to talk about religous things, right,

well, then I wondered, Christmas is the R word, so I easter, and many others,

Christmas is not only a Christian custom. Although the original purpose was a religious custom many non Christians now practice it. For example many agnostic, families today although they are not Christian still exchange gifts on December 25.

I do not think it makes sense for people to get all worked up over the mention of ones religious customs, or beliefs. To day stores are getting sued for saying merry Christmas. If I were in a Muslim country such as the UAE (united Arab emirates), and a store cashier mentions Ramadan I would not be offended. I would simply ignore the fact I do not celebrate it, and get on with my life, and I think that’s what everyone else should be doing. Someone wishing you a merry Christmas does not take away from your Freedom of religion. In fact if it really bothers you then just wish them a good (insert alternate custom here), and If you can not handle hearing the name of a specific custom, just don’t shop there. However, there is no reason so waste tax payer money in court, or threaten your employees jobs over a holiday greeting.

Just to add to this Christmas falls on the same day as Yuletide the far more ancient pagan holiday. As for the whole thing of other people wishing you a happy Ramadan or a happy Easter, you should look past the ethic/cultural aspect of what theyre saying and look at the heart of it. They are wishing you happiness on a day that they believe is special. That is the most human, the most kind thing you can do to another person. To hope that they will be happy.

Exactly people are getting worked up with the literal meaning of what someone is saying when they wish them a Merry Christmas, or some other custom, they need to look beyond into the persons motive/ actions. Why that person is doing this. By saying Merry Christmas I am not being malicious, or attacking the person. I am wish the person a good day, on a holiday that I celebrate. As for the rule here on bungie.net. It is all right to wish someone a Merry Christmas as well as wish them a Good(insert custom), because you are not discussing the details, or forcing your faith on them. What the rule is applying to is the directs discussion/ debate of religious validity. There are plenty of religious groups out there, and if you would like to discuss the details of your faith, then those are open for discussion, but I would not apply greetings, or lists of what you want to get for Christmas, to this rule.

aye, I can't stand being PC.

but Iamthey got it right, if somone wishes me a happy ramadan, they are not wishing me to celebrate it, they just want me to be happy during the holiday season. I don't see anything wrong with that. Frankly, I would prefer having a happy hanukah, it's longer than Christmas.

someone could be against christmas,

If they choose to speak out against Christmas from a religious or political standpoint then they will be blacklisted.

I could hate Christmas for the superficial materialism it creates (which is an acceptable opinion) but if I hate Christmas because I have some gripe with Christianity then that is not acceptable.

that which is not dead can eternal lie, but with strange aeons even death may die.

me, being christian, I can easily take Critisism, and all that,

but bringing up something totally stupid like this...what does it, achive...Nothing.

I mean, first *Christmas* was monopolysed by the Government,

then now, if you work at most stores, its now "un-accecptable" to say "Merry-Christmas"

, now you have to say "Happy Holidays", or "Seasons Greeting"...its just sick...

If you look at both the American and the Canadian National Anthoms, they are boths based on Christianity, and what about "God save the queen"? huh?

I mean, 50 years ago, even with multi-cultural countries, and societies, no-body cared or took offense if some person came up to them and said "merry-christmas", but now...its like an Insult, or some very bad and hated term...

It just sickenss me...

As I have stated before, its just the fact that society is falling apart. But with the topic, Christmas is a holiday. The history of the holiday does not matter. Its a national holiday on the calendar. To say "Merry Christmas" is in no way a religious statement. Its saying to have a merry Christmas. To have a happy day on December 25th. Not "Oh Christmas is is my religious day that you must be merry upon or I will kill you". Come on people, its a HOLIDAY. To many people it holds religious backings, but when someone wishes you to be merry on it, its because they hope you will take some time off of stress and be happy. So therefore, I should not be against the rules to say such.

If people on this site get so hypersensitive that the word Christmas starts to offend them, then I will be making my exit. Morons offend me.

Yeah well a pet peeve of mine is when other people tell me what their pet peeves are.

Damn it Pezza. See what you made me do? :)

Seriously though. People need to lighten up. Like Rant said, all they are doing you is wishing you well on a day that is special to them. What actual harm is there in that? None in my eyes. There are worse things in the world to worry about then if somebody wished you a Merry Christmas on a forum or on the street.

  • 10.23.2006 10:22 AM PDT

Christmas and Easter are celebrated by many people who are not religious. I'm pretty sure Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny aren't in the bible.

Same for me. It seems to me that people want people to say Happy Holidays and not Christmas, because they want to complain about nothing. I seriously doubt they are really offended by it. And if they are really offended by it, then they should stop, because to be offended is a choice, it is 100% choice.

It reminds me of how threads about or directed to Moderators are not allowed. This is entirely stupid. Moderators are just members like me or you. They just fall into one category that we don't. It is like directing or asking a question to members that have been around since 2004, or members that have played Halo Combat Evolved. They are just members they fall into a certain category. We should be allowed to have moderator directed threads. But some members just enjoy complaining about threads like that.

FIrst its spelled Hannukah or Chanukah if you like. Second you cant make threads about mods because they ARE part of the community and you cant make threads on individual users. Unless you want someone to possibly make a thread personally attacking you at some point.

First, it was an honest typo. Second, making a thread about moderators is not about an individual person. If you made a thread about or to Recon Number 54, however, then it should be locked.
