Bungie has stated that they are only considering a demo for halo 2 after the initial launch. This makes a lot of sense. For now, they dont want to be giving anything away. After the launch, demos are one of the best ways to convince people to buy a game.

Here is an example of what I mean:
Lets look at a list of features the original halo offers:
A few standard game modes: CTF, Slayer, race, ball, and capture the hill, and team options for all.
Very generic weapons: Pistol, assault rifle, sniper rifle, rocket launcher, alien assault rifle, alien pistol, needler, gernades, etc etc.
Vehicles: 3 person light attack vehicles, single person speedster, a tank.
Only a few decent levels (Blood gulch, sidewinder, hang em high for big maps)
Not too much customizing.

If you were to hand me this list about halo before I would have played it, I would have laughed at you and kept playing Unreal Tournament. After much convincing, I played it at a friends house. The next day I ordered my xbox, 4 contollers, a lan setup, halo, and cancelled all my ps2 pre orders that were multi counsel and ordered them for my xbox instead. Then the next week we had the first 16 person Lan in my area at my house.

A taste of the game is what really shows people what the game is all about, and how much fun the game really is. If egm magazine got a 4 person multiplayer demo with only one level, people would play, then buy. The only problem with a demo is getting it into the hands of people who don’t have an xbox, but for that I guess we can wait for halo 2 pc. I think a downloadable demo over live also might be a great idea for the few that have live, but not halo.

In short, bungie is right on track, as always.

EDIT: while i was writing this, many people responded and used several of my points, so if it sounds redundant, sorry.
