I have seen a lot of topics and posts recently with very poor spelling and grammar. The OP would either type without punctuation and capitilization or would spell every other word wrong. This can make posts hard to read, and I know there is a section in the New Mombassa sticky where Shishka suggests that we should use proper grammar and spelling. ( Link )

I think the moderators should actually make this a rule and enforce it as a rule, i.e. warnings first for offense, then the 7 day blacklist for more offenses or whatever. This would greatly improve the forums, and would make life easier on everyone. I'm not saying that Bungie should become grammar police, correcting every little error. I'm saying they should begin to give warnings to members who use terrible grammar. And I mean terrible. Everyone has seen the posts that are practically impossible to read. I think members would be more likely to look over their posts or at least attempt proper grammar if there were consequences.

All in all, I am suggesting that Bungie actually makes a rule stating that any member who repeatedly has so many grammar and spelling mistakes that their writing is incoherent should be given some warnings, then a blacklisting. This potentially could keep members from making unreadable posts because they are too lazy to write properly.

EDIT- I would just like to reiterate. I am only talking about sever cases of bad grammar and spelling. A couple of mistakes in a post is not bad, but so many that it is hard to understand is. Also, this all could only apply to the original post. That way everyone in the topic would understand what it is about.

No. Some people don't speak 73h 3nglish all that well, and so they would be banned for posting incorrectly in a 2nd language.

We aren't N4zis.

For the record, i'd piss my self silly if there was an Armatik action figure.

It might even get members to actually think before they post.

But Mozilla is coming out with Firefox 2.0 and spellchecker. IE 7 has a spellchecker too, I believe.

I'm going to force you to wear a black shirt instead of a green one because black is easier to look at. Many people don't use correct grammar, but they are still understandable. I'll admit that people who use correct spelling and grammar in their posts are easier to understand, but this is not worthy of making a "good grammar" rule.

Perhaps give out warnings. Blacklisting seems a bit harsh, but I'd like to see some what of a rule like the one you've suggested.

I am not saying that it shouls be against the rules to make a few errors. I have seen many posts that are almost not understandable. I should bot have to stare at my screen for five minutes trying to decipher the words put on by someone too lazy to type correctly.

I agree. Blacklistings would be excessive, but i don't know what else could be used as a consequence besides warnings.

ther are sum peeple dat cant or dont no how to spel the rite wai and it wood not be fare for thos 2 hav to accomodate every1 else so u shud just lern 2 reed loser

That is an example of spelling that gives me a headache. Although this is how I used to spell when I first came on to this site, I have changed my ways and became what you see now.

I suggest that the mods could give out warnings. Blacklisting people seems a bit harsh though, I mean this isn't school where you should be punished for not spelling something correctly or incorrectly. And besides, sometimes the mods have spelling and grammars mistakes aswell, so they would basically have to blacklist themselves.

I am saying that they should only be given warnings or whatever if they make an almost incoherent post, like the one you quoted. As long as the post is not too hard too understand, it is okay. But once i have to actually think to be able to read the words, there needs to be a change.

That's like putting people in jail because they can't speak eloquently in public, or, on the extreme, castrating people who have below a certain IQ. It might be a good idea on paper but it will never work out there in the big bad real world due to those annoying things people call "ethics". Sure, I'd rather hear clear English rather than, say, Ebonics, but I can't force someone to speak a certain way just because it will make my ears feel better. Even in "leet" posts, they aren't really causing any problems per se- and other than maybe some people with strained eyes, no one is actually hurt other than maybe the poster himself.

Basically it goes like this: People take you a lot more seriously when your posts have proper grammar/spelling/whatever else.

If you don't want to, you don't have to. Though I have seen when it was enforced (once.) The user in question was Capping Every Word Of His Sentences Like This. He was asked to stop, but he didn't. So he was blacklisted.

That was the only time I've seen it. But even in that case, the user flatly told the moderator that he wasn't going to comply, but regardless, the end result would have been the same either way (because he was warned.)

But yeah, I don't think it should be enforced. Maybe for extreme cases (you guys know what I'm talking about) there should be a warning, then a ban. But not something like noticing a user not using proper grammar and banning him for it on the spot.

All in all, you get treated with respect if you can prove basic punctuation and English language skills in your post. That's about it these days.

Lets see, just for kicks, I think I will spell wrong for this post......be prepared to think::

wel i dunt tink dat speling leik dis is bad butt tu be quit honest it howts mei brayn gust tipeing dis.

So now I am quiting, the point I was trying to get to, is that yes, that is legible, hardly though. Sometimes you have to take a guess as to what the person is talking about. In other words an example as of what you were talking about. As long is I can read it and understand it I am happy, but when it becomes in-eligible, then well, I don't reply to a post.

I think i may have come up with a better idea. How about the proper grammar and such is only required in the original post. That is where most of the problems are, anyway. It does kind of make sense that the beginning of a discussion should be comprehendable.

I agree, the first post should be the most legible of any post within a thread. Mainly, because that starts the discussion.

Not everyone uses Firefox. However.. IE7 has a spell checker that can be installed. IE-Spell I believe.

I don't quite understand. If the thread creator has bad spelling, then ask him to fix it. If he refuses, ignore the thread. If everyone else does likewise, what will happen if he refuses? His thread will drop into obscurity. So what happens then? He either learns a lesson, or gets in trouble anyways when he bumps the thread or remakes it.

And Safari has a built in spell-checker... so there isn't really a reason why people should be spelling stuff wrong anyways. Unless they're on a browser that doesn't have one.

Skillet was here and referred to himself in the third person.

I don't really care. Most of the time I can understand the person and their spelling doesn't really bother me. If they're flaming me with horrible spelling and grammar though, I sometimes comment on it. Nothing much.

It shouldn't be made into a rule because everybody makes mistakes. Now when they are using bad spelling and grammar as a way to spam everything...warning and then ban their ass!

The ironic thing, when I got permenently blacklisted a while back *Won't say by who or reason why*, under the reason why I got blacklisted, one of the words that the moderator said was misspelt. If they started inforcing that, it would be quite ironic, huh? =P

Anyone happen to remember when I kept links to spell checking addons for both Firefox and Internet Explorer in my signature?

I doubt seriously that people will think before they post because of a spell-checking rule. Think about how many people post in the incorrect forum and I think you'll see my point.

Ha. I actually installed that thing. I think I shoved it in my signature for a bit after you buggered off.

The way I see it is this: If someone doesn't wanna spell right, fine by me. But if I have to take effort into figuring out what they spelt, I'm skipping their post. No paragraphing? Poor grammar? Various spelling errors? Screw that, their opinion is now obsolete.

Unless their spelling is off-the-wall with numbers flying around when there is no quantity to speak of or they shorten any word less than five letters, I don't think you needa enforce crap.

I mean, a forum's a place to have fun. A little legroom never hurt.

Having better grammar inspires a sense of seriousness, intelligence and professionalism. Though we all have to learn that ourselves.
