Subject: Ban Some More Slang Terms?

I've been drifting through the New Mombassa and Maw forums, in particular, and I've noticed the term "bad kid" or "BK" come up a lot. To, me, it's almost as bad as the word "noob", and is now getting used in place of it. Sure, you could say, 'if you ban this word, they'll come up with another', but I think that's just a lazy attitude to look at it with.

I'm kind of annoyed, almost disgusted, at the amount of elitism when it comes to 'skill' among these forums, and the use of the term "Bad kid", usually against other forum members in a straight-up rude tone. It's not nice, in the slightest, and I really don't like it. ... Maybe it's just me, but it almost comes across the same as a cultural slang term for another culture, such as racism. In this case, it (personally) feels like some sort of "faux pro" slang term used to define everyone who isn't somewhere in the realm of "pro". This is just my lowly opinion.

Anyone else out there thinking the same way?

"Nah, Rant, your idea is flawed, you're just a bad kid. Bad kids shouldn't come here."

I find it offensive, even if you think it's some sort fo "Expression of who they are".. Ok, they're expressing to me, that they think they're superior, and therefore act upon it, in the form of a jerk. Alright, let's ban jerks, then.

Hmm, maybe it's a certain breed of jerk, then, that always seems to get passed the mods. To me, it's just rude. If someone comments on how they're unable to kill an enemy, and are looking for tips, or tries to post their stats, just for some personal pride, it's damn rude to come into that thread and post about how they're a 'bad kid'. Even if it's not aimed at a specific person, but a group of people, calling some group "bad kids", or saying "I love owning bad kids in matchmaking all the time", it's still offensive. I hardly see a difference (now, more-so than a few months ago) between:
"You're a noob." and
"You're a bad kid."

Before recent, I would've taken it as "bad kid", such as, disobeys parents, etc., but now it's become a derogatory slang word, used on the forums. Well, this is just my opinion, and if you feel that it's not an issue, then please, keep walking by, or speak up and tell me. Whatever suits you. :)

Ban it? I don't think so. I don't think "newb" should have ever been banned. Whenever I see anyone who's elitist over a video game, I tend to chuckle to myself and not even bother answering. Those terms are only as offensive as you take them.

If they're enough of a jerk about it, PM the Mods and hope a blacklisting comes to fruition.

It was a cold day near the southern base in Blood Gulch. Cortana and I were relaxing over a game of Go Fish, WHEN OUT OF NO WHERE 700 BANSHEES CAME FLYING IN!!! I GRABED MY SPARTAN LASER AND LET HELL REIGN DOWN UPON THEM. I HOPPED IN THE NEAREST WARTHOG AND TOLD CORTANA TO GET IN.

Ugh. Guys, it's not the end of the world if you get called a "bad kid". Seriously, just grow up.

And I always laugh when I hear people talk about elitism on this forum. First off, it's a forum about a video game- a very competative, fast-paced video game. Naturally, won't the people on it represent the people who like that genre of game? Isn't it fair to say that the people on the forum will be just as competative? Who cares if someone is looking down on you. It's a forum filled with a bunch of teenage guys (for the most part) who have more testosterone then they know what to do with.

Noob shouldn't have been banned either.

Let's not go backwards. I find "Bad Kid" more irritating than "Noob", as it's a pure implication of inferiority.

And you can't ban "BK" (with the -blam!- filter at least) as there are several words that incorporate those letters like... NuBKake..? :D

Seriously, are there any?

Depends on how much it's used. I too have noticed that it's becoming a more frequently used term.

That's true, Rant. People will continue to use the word regardless of it being banned (people still use the "n-word" despite the fact it's clearly against the rules.)

We've pretty much given the phrase "Bad Kid" it's power. It actually just started a couple weeks ago, when someone started using it in every other post, and it just caught on from there.

But I do feel that we should at least watch and see what happens. We don't need to baby everyone on the site (or so they say) so I guess we'll see where maturity can get us (if anywhere.)

I don't really see how people can be offended by being called a bad kid. I've had a teacher call me a "jag" and I wasn't even offended.

I'm not really caught up with the Halo 2 lingo going on.

BK?

Lol, calling people bad kids. What will they do next?

  • 10.26.2006 4:26 PM PDT

If you don't got it, you want it. If you got it, you want more of it. Of course if you don't know what it is, it's hard to get any in the first place.

It's a matter of respect. For those your discussing with, those who may be reading, and to the forum as a whole. When you start using terms like the N-word, or BK, or any crap like that, your reducing the quality of this community. I think that the Seventh Column clearly has had enough degredation for one game cycle.

I say just go ahead and add those terms to the Blam filter, but that's just me.

Thats about right, if you just made an age limit to 17, you would hear bad kid, noob, or "DUDE DID U JUST SEE ME R-A-P-E THAT KID" alot less.

I think everybody should have the right to make themselves look like an idiot by using n00b, etc. When trying to communicate, its nice to know what you're up against sometimes.

When I see BK, I think British Knights.

Now you need to smack Rant on the nose with a newspaper. "Bad kid! Bad!

Zag, I don't think BK is anywhere near as offensive as noob, retard, stupid or any of the other derogatory words people use on B.net.
