That's actually illegal, isn't it? That guy didn't make those maps, and I'm pretty sure he didn't get permission before putting them on a DVD and trying to sell them on Ebay.

Silly him.

Iggwilv.. It goes as such:

Listen! Do you smell something?
Legal action!

Although he could be charging for having collected the maps and put them on a DVD and building an install utility, I think he would still have to get permission from the creators of the maps. That's a lot of permissions. Hopefully Zeph will chime in, he would know more about ittelectual property of user created content.

Yeah, I'll be sure to spread this around so the word gets out; reminds me of the time when someone was offering for people to send in their Xboxes so he could mod them so they could play Mothergoat's maps; Mothergoat was pissed; the site no longer exists. ;)

I actually did a report for Law class about this very subject way back when.

A lot of people seem to forget that THE INTERNET IS NOT PUBLIC DOMAIN! What you see on a webpage, Someone created. That is Thier intellectual property. I've already seen two such offenses within the last year of someone taking a bunch of web crap (maps for Flatout and pictures for a book) and compiling it into a collection then trying to make a profit off it. Both times the guys didn't last a day before they were threatened with charges.

If anyone knows the creator of any of these maps, contact them immediately and make sure they know about this and that they contact this gentleman. He'll most likely back down at the first hint of charges.

How can you get all the maps at one time? Are the extra maps really such a bad thing?

Ok, the Bungie forum server just went down a minute ago and this is the third time I've had to post this, so now I'm really pissed.

It is really such a bad thing? Yes!

Those maps are someones intellectual property, as such, one is required to ask the permission of the author before using said property in any way shape or form that may garner profit to yourself. If you were to make, say, a map and you put it on the internet for everyones enjoyment. How would you feel if someone took that, and started charging money for it? I bet you'd be pretty pissed.

The internet is not public domain, that means you can't take something another person has created and use it for your own profit. Just like it's illegal to copy a movie DVD and sell it bootleg.

This guy has a ton of hurt in store for him if he hasn't asked every single one of those authors for permission to sell thier work. People like this almost always back down at the first threat because if the author can produce the original file, it's theft.

TRIGGER, it's time for your actions to reflect your name. Gtfo your laptop, lock and load your .357, and ask your mother for a ride to a "friend's house", namely this dude's.

Man that -blam!-s weak!

What you should do, is tie his hands and stand him up on a chair, stick a grenade in his mouth and tie the pin off to the ceiling. Then leave him.

If I recall correctly, when bungie released the tools to make maps for Marathon, it was illegal to claim copyrights on maps you made with them– they were to be for free distribution only.

If this is the same deal, the authors have no claim, but bungie might.

Most of the PC issues posted here are the result of PEBKAC.

I should try downloading all of the available maps. It might just take up a DVD.

Add me to your friends list if you haven't already. It's a lot more fun to play with people from The Maw and people I know than random noobs.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that is illegal.

Think of it this way:
You write a cool story for fun. Then some guy takes it and gets extra credit in his English/ Lit. class for it. He didn't deserve the credit, he did nothing so he deserves nothing.

I dunno man I think that since they're already up for free distrubution one could argue you're paying that guy not for the maps but for the ease of installation, and materials he has to use. he also had to work for a while on the installation scripts in all probability.
Is it worth 20 bucks? No because 95% of all CE maps are never played.
Is it his right to try to sucker idiots into buying it? Perhaps.

Not even that Ryanman, but 95% of those maps also suck; it's like selling a used, broken condom and guarunteeing it will still do what it was designed to do.

So is it ok for someone to sell a blank dvd for $19.99 and offer to put these on there for free then?

I wonder if the Wolf thinks the Moon listens when he howls at it.

Seriously that is copy right infringement at some level. Call the FCC. Get that guy off of ebay.
